Tomar the Former City of the Knight Templars | Portugal

Tomar was one of the most influential cities in the Iberian Peninsula during the 13th Century. It is famous by its Convento of Christ, primarily the stronghold of Knight Templars and later transferred to the order of Christ. In the Convento of Christ visitors can see different architecture style from Gothic, Manueline and Renaissance with particular attention to the Church (Ambulatory) with historical structures referring to Jerusalem. The city presents a unique scenery with river Nabão, its historical centre, beautiful gardens and typical houses.
The other attraction is at Porto de Mós, a portrait of the Knight Templars, Moorish and the Christian Portuguese with its spectacular medieval castle in shape of pyramidal ceramic green domes.
The tour ends visiting the Almourol castle with its topology at the top of a massive granitic island at Tagus river. Visitors can enjoy visiting the castle crossing the river by a small boat and so enjoying the river banks and the landscape.

This fantastic castle has been restored with great taste and skill, and at under €2 to visit is amazing. The views are very special and it is well worth the visit after visiting many of the other historical sites in this area of Portugal. Wonderful discovery.

The castle looks beautiful from the outside. I can not comment on the inside as it was closed (apparently for months) because of construction. This is not an information I could find online so it was a little disappointing to drive away without seeing much.

We was going to the caves on a day out and we could see this castle on the way there. after the caves we thought we would visit it on the way back. It was only 1/2 hour from the caves so no big detour. we followed the signs and parked up outside so no walking up to it. at 230 the guy arrived and opened and we went in. we was made to feel so welcome and the man in the shop was so nice.. it only took about an hour to go round the castle and take pictures but we all enjoyed it and the views where lovely. Go if you can but include the visit with the caves so it makes the trip worthwhile. Nice place. bill and family

Restored Gothic and Renascence Castle. Pretty good from the outside, i payed the entrance to have a look in the inside. What it looks like is that they are still restoring so it doesn’t really have anything in the inside. It was a little disappointment but the top sunset view is Amazing! With that really nice green tiles decoration on the top of the towers makes the castle pretty unique. It has some really nice corners but be prepared not to expect to see to much so then you don’t get disappointed. They need more visitors to get all the reconstruction done!
