Rama Lake is located in the foot hills of Nanga Parbat massif and just below the Rama Glacier. Nanga Parbat peak is not visible from Rama Lake though.

Approx an hour journey from Astor (7800 ft), one passes through one of the most lush green valley to reach Rama Meadows which is a place area at 10400 ft. The scenery enroute is absolutey breathtaking. The road has few sharp turns and steep gradiant at places. If you are traveling in a car than watchout, it would be better to travel in a 4x4 vehicle with high road clearance.
PTDC Motel in Rama is a good place for a brief stopover (freshning up / cup of tea) and placing order for meals that you might consume upon your return from Rama Lake. The lake is another 4.5 km from PTDC Motel / Rama Polo Ground. Each year in August, a Polo Festival is held at Rama Polo Ground which is just next to PTDC Motel. Travel to lake can only be done on a 4x4 vehicle. Road will take you approx 1.5 km short of the lake, from there on you will have to travel on foot which will take another 20-30 minutes. Enroute, you will come across 3-4 ponds of emerald blue water; nice spots for brief stop over and photography.

When you reach the lake (11420 ft} which is just below the Rama Glacier (12050 ft), the sight is absolutely fascinating. There is a small kiosk on the lake that provides snacks and basic food but its better to take eatables / refreshments along. A walk along the lake shore is a great fun and climbing an odd hill along lake side to get better views for photography is really worth it. Adventurous people can do some hiking up to Rama Glacier which runs approx. 600-700 hundred feet higher than the lake. A thrilling experience indeed but walk on the glacier itself MUST BE AVOIDED as there are too many dangerous crevasses on the glacier.

One can hire a local jeep from Astor which will charge Rs 6000 to 10000/- for a day trip.

The walk up to the lake is fun if you don't take the car track. The lake itself isn't that great but the mountains surrounding it are fantastic as is the valley. A good long trek at hand if you go around and come down to the pine forest instead of going back the same way.

Lake Rama is located high up in the Himalayas. One of the finest spots if you are looking for something out of the ordinary.
It is a short, 2-3 km walk, but very steep, uphill, from a dirt track which is almost adjacent to the PTDC Rama. PTDC hotel at Rama provides a decent accommodation and caters to the toursits visiting the area.
Rama itself, is located in Astore, which is administratively part of Skardu. However, Astore is real close to the KKH and can be easily accessed from the main road via a metal top road. It is around 55 km to Rama village, but will take around 3-4 hours as the narrow gouge leading up to Astore, and then the even narrower road towards Rama village takes up more effort and time to cover single km than the average B class roads elsewhere.
The walk from the last vehicle point, is a full-day activity, but very rewarding. Once you reach the lake, all the tiredness is immediately washed away.
A must-see if you are visiting the North.....

Although my stay was quite limited here but the place has a lot of buzz. Especially, Rama fest is one of must-go Northern Pakistan's event.

The walk from the first Glacier that the jeep dropped us at to the main lake area lake is about 1.5km (no all of it is uphill). You can view the lake earlier and only do 1km. At other times it is possible that the road access is possible further up. Motor bikes were able to (with some effort) get over the glacier and go further. There is food available at the lake. Early in the morning there were few people and the lake was still like a mirror for some great photos.
It may be possible to walk around the lake too but my wife only went half way as we had to head back.

We stayed in Rama for one night and visited the Lake foe several hours. The water was lovely and clear and the mountain tops were covered in snow. What made it particularly beautiful was the autumn colours of the trees against the water and snow. A couple of locals were fishing but we simply enjoyed watching them and taking photos. Worth the visit.
