Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

With little funding from the government, this beautiful church is meticulously being taken care of by a knowledgeable and caring staff. We were in for a treat as our guide, no less than the museum curator, Angelica Silva, answered all our questions and transported us in its almost 400 years of history. Bravo!

The Jesuit Sacred Art Museum is part of the historical-cultural-religious complex of Pateo do Collegio. The church was built between 1700-1705 under the guidance of Fr. Belchior de Pontes. The collection is very rich with works dating from the 17th to the 20th century, consisting of altarpieces, images of roca, furniture and the oldest organ produced in Brazil.

Our English-speaking guide that we just stumbled upon in the museum shared a lot of information. Very informative and entertaining, about the building itself as well as the Jesuit congregation. There are still quite a few original pieces.

Very interesting collection of church artifacts and in good condition.
Second oldest organ in Brazil, this one in bad shape, with no money to restore it.

It is worth a 20-30 minutes visit. The main attractions are wood sculptures of the Christ carrying the cross, in pain - dated from the 17th-18th century. The old church where the museum is located dates from 1690. Unfortunately the museum store is poor.

This is a beautiful and extraordinary collection of Catholic sacred art. It's not massif or especially extensive but it's the best representation of this type of Brazilian art I believe you can see anywhere. The nativities are the largest and most elaborate anywhere.
