San Cristobal Canyon

Amazing experience but be careful. You can get lost easily. Go with someone that knows the route. Water necessary to avoid dehydration. Will go again definitely.

A Treasure in the Mountains!
May 2016 • Couples
This place has not been developed by the tourism entities. It is still virgin. If you want to enjoy the waterfall...you got to hike all the way down on your behind. It is challenging, but worth every effort.

Hard to get to.... Reserve early!!
Jan. 2017 • Couples
This is the information for people planning a trip to the canyon. First of all, call the tour operators early to reserve. We didn't get anyone to take us to the canyon even after using some powerful locals to help. Second of all, from what we read and heard, it is a challenging trip you need to be very well prepared for and fit to complete.
We settled for looking at the canyon from the rim. Used the Google maps photo icon, which took us to a locked gate. We spoke to a couple of people who live in vicinity of the canyon and they couldn't give us direction to actually see the canyon.
Didn't see it, but decided to share our experience so you can be smarter about getting there.

Amazing hike and refreshing swim

expert level hiking up and down a huge steep slope to get to the bottom of canyon. Definitely not what I was expecting (in a good way). Beautiful scenery and amazing blue crystal clear water with huge rocks to climb and jump off of into lake. I rained on us the whole time we were there but for a brief 30 minutes it cleared up when we made it to the lake. it feels totally secluded and serene. Excellent time. great fruit stands and little strip mall where we parked on the corner. we parked there and went around a fence and took the road/path. then it forks - go LEFT and walk about a 1/4 mile then you will see a path that goes into the woods down the cliff side. take that. Good luck and have fun!

This was a nice experience. You are in contact with the nature all the time. The green montains and the clear water at Cañon San Cristobal are beautiful. This was a great adventure, you most do it too!

The Beauty of Puerto Rico!
Apr. 2015 • Friends
One of the best places to visit! San Cristobal Canyon is really beautiful however if you are planning to visit this place there's only two ways you will find it. First, with a local tourist guide or with a friend who already knows the area. Really easy to get lost and will not recommend wondering by yourself if you are unfamiliar with the area.

Exhilarating way to experience Puerto Rico!!
Mar. 2016 • Couples
My husband and I explored San Cristobal Canyon over 6 hours with professional guides from Montana Explora. The adventure was nothing short of exhilarating, and the scenery was breathtaking!! We started with a short hike into the rain forest, where we soon came to a river bed. Water levels were low, but despite, as we continued to walk, we witnessed more than a few cascading waterfalls. The highlights included rappelling down canyon walls and jumping from high heights into cool, clear, fresh mountain pools. Our guides, Ricky and Luis, shared their knowledgeable about the local trees and flora all along the way. When it came to the more challenging parts, they were extremely professional and patient. They perfectly gauged our abilities to the activities, so we always felt safe. Most of all, they made it really fun!! In fact, we had so much fun, we booked another canyoneering adventure with Montana Explora to do with my college aged daughter and her friend a few days later on the South Side of El Yunque. See Montana Explora - Tour on TripAdvisor for the review...

BOTTOM LINE: If you're looking for a fun way to experience the hidden beauty of the island, I highly recommend exploring San Cristobal Canyon with Montana Explora!!!

Seeing the canyon for the first time.

Did not hike all the way down, but saw from a scenic outpost. The canyon formations, the sheer waterfalls and the pools were breathtaking. A dry spell is needed to go down the rocky, slippery trail for average travelers. Absolutely beautiful!
