We spent a lovely afternoon in the company of Mario and one of his colleagues visiting the Bacalhoa Palace and then Museum. The visit finished with a small wine tasting. Mario was very knowledgeable about the history and events behind the different sites visited and gently lead our varied group through the different rooms visited. The wine tasting at the end was a delightful way to finish our visit. The guided tour was easy to reserve via the webpage of the site and confirmed by email.

I visited Bacalhoa Palace and Estate on what essentially was a long-distance first date. The staff at the palace could not have treated us better. We enjoyed a wine tasting before the tour, followed by a tour of the winery itself complete with art from all over the world and a viewing of the wine barrels. At the end of the tour, we even got to taste a little more wine. Thank you for a great experience.

We visited the Bacalha Estate while staying in Setubal. The palace and wine tour was awesome, people were so friendly and our host/guide was very friendly.

In order to visit the Palac of Bacalhoa, it is necessary to buy tickets at the Bacalhoa winery, some 2 km further on at the Nacional 10 road. It is worth it. A sumptuous palace, filled with history and historic monuments, wonderful gardens and an artificial pool built in the eighteenth century, breathtaking azulejos, many historical monuments, and the very cabernet sauvignon vinea that produce the famous quinta da Bacalhoa. Magnificent and not to miss!

Thank you for your comments. We had the pleasure of your visit in the Bacalhoa Museum and in the Bacalhoa Palace. We are waiting for you again at these locations or in the Bacalhoa Buddha Eden, the largest oriental garden of Europe or in the Aliança Undergroud Museum which is 1.5 km long.

Disappointed overall. Started at the shop only to be told we had to drive to the palace…. Bit untogether whilst everyone got back into their cars…
Our guide was a nice enough but he failed to point out the key aspects of how the whole palace, vineyard, art collection and African artefacts all fitted together… the tour seemed very disjointed.
I also struggled with the lack of air conditioning in almost all the rooms and there was hardly anywhere to sit….. bearing in mind I am a reasonably fit 63 yr old… I don’t think this tour would be suitable for some less able or older.
As for the wine tasting some 2.45hrs later (back at the shop) we were ushered into a cafeteria type set up with massive background noise from other tasting groups and our guide disappeared for long periods of time. He then offered us 3 drinks (Chardonnay, Red and moscatel) but just poured and left with no real explanation of any of the wines.
Considering we booked for a wine tour (and have done good ones else where) we were very dissatisfied.
However… we did do Bacalhoa Buddha Eden near Bombarral… and that was super cool…. Well worth a visit….

took an incredible tour of the Bacalhoa Vinhos de Portugal winery and palace, which is a “must do” if you like either art or wine - and hopefully both. The Bacalhoa winery is the largest in Portugal and is now owned by the Berardo family that has collected some great art over the past decades. The Berardo owner of the Winery made a fortune in diamonds in South Africa and bought a palatial country palace near the winery and proceeded to restore it even more than it had been restored earlier by its previous American owner. His “Palace of Bacalhoa” has really been restored to its former glory and the owner's son's family now lives on the second floor. Because of this, you’re only allowed to go through the first (ground) floor and the “lake house”, but the restoration that has been done in these areas is amazing..
Much of the collected art is shown in a separate large building - the Museum of Bacalhoa - next to the wine store where tastings take place. The art is divided into three large areas: Art Deco, African Art, and Portuguese Tiles, reflecting the diverse tastes of the owner. The art in each of these mammoth areas is superb.
The way to see all this is to make a reservation for a tour (that lasts 2 and a half hours if you do everything) and the guide to get if you want an English tour is Bernardo (or “Ben” as he calls himself to Americans). “Ben” is one of the best guides I’ve ever had (and I’ve had a lot). He’s young - in his twenties - but he’s incredibly knowledgeable about the house, its restoration, and the art itself. I’ve never seen anyone more enthusiastic or friendly and his obvious reverence for what the owner has done shows through all the time.
And then there’s the wine. “Ben” takes you on a tour of the wine making process and once again his excitement about the wine is catching. The wine tasting at the end is a lot of fun and you get generous “tastes” of three of the Company's fine wines.
All in all, if you have the time while in Lisbon and like wine or art, go on this tour and try to get “Ben” as your guide. You will learn a lot and have fun doing it.

Visiting the place was a nice experience. The garden is big, but not as big as the main garden. The museum was inspiring with the modern art as well as sculptures and in the end African art. The trip ends in a wine cellar with typical portugueses azulejo. Amazed by the garden and sculptures around the property. The trip ends into a wineshop with a wine tasting from the winery. They also have a rare grape which is called muscatel roxo which means purple muscatel that makes a special type of wine. The place is perfect to visit with friends or family. The employers speak english, which is not very common in small villages like this one.

The tour was excellent but be sure to also visit the winery museum (which is much more than that as it includes lots of art from the owner's amazing collection).

When we went, not too many people on our tour - so it felt very personal. Learned about the history of the palace and the wine. Very lovely displays. The castle and the grounds are very nice. Going back to the art gallery - it was very random but nice too! African displays. Lots of wine tastings. My boyfriend was interested in their Brandy... and requested a possible tasting.. They opened up a bottle and gave us both tastings. The brandy was delightful. We bought a bottle... and they ended up giving us the tastings for free. Definitely worth the visit if you like wine and brandy. Enjoyed it very much!
