The Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church is the one and only catholic church as well as praying garden in the Special Region of Yogyakarta where we will see the most spiritual harmony acculturation between Ancient Javanese & Hindu-Buddha and Modern Javanese & Islam sacredly integrated together within Christianity. Like some of other catholic worship places, here we can find church and praying garden be one in one place. But there are so much different regarding holy church with Javanese-gazebo design and all Javanese traditional property used in worshipping, Holy Jesus statue inside of a sacred temple with Hindu-Buddha shape in its praying garden, holy waters statue which source from natural spring believed to be a everlasting blessing, and many more.
We can visit this church by driving around 45 minutes to the Bambanglipuro District of Bantul Regency on the southern side of Yogyakarta city.

Catholic architecture wasn't the first thing I was expecting in Yogyakarta. But this church is beautiful. It is a wonderful example of the Catholic Church's ancient tradition of inculturation: accepting what is beautiful in local cultures while preserving the essentials of Christian doctrine. The church is built like a kraton (a Javanese royal palace) and incorporates traditional Javanese sculpture and architectural styles. It's also a very peaceful place.

As a Catholic, I found this church to be very interesting, beautiful, and unique. I'm so glad that I went! (For non-Catholics, I'm not sure that they would find the drive out to this location to be worthwhile.) The architecture, artwork, and religious iconography is all in the Javanese style. There is a large statue of Jesus with Asian features and dressed like a Javanese king. Another gorgeous statue of Mary and the baby Jesus also reflects Asian features and both dressed in traditional Javanese clothing. All statues are carved in a beautiful honey-colored stone. The main church looks like a Javanese temple and a separate adoration temple looks like something from Prambanan. The impressive angels on the main altar also look like something from a Balinese Hindu temple. We were there midweek and there were many locals quietly praying at different places and doing the stations of the cross. Very moving and I've never seen another Catholic church like it. If going from downtown Yogya, ask your driver to go via scenic secondary roads that wind their way through nice small villages and, of course, picture perfect rice fields.

I attended mass with an Indonesian Catholic, and we were both really moved by the experience. Mass is celebrated in Javanese, so she needed her missal to follow just like me. We then walked around to pray at side chapels and take photos of the diverse images of Christ and Mary. People were very welcoming and explained some of the images, but I don't know if those only speaking English could get much background. It's a peaceful place, and I'm glad we could support the orphanage on the complex with purchases from the gift shop. Definitely one of the most unique and beautiful churches I've been to, and I recommend any Catholics visiting Jogya take this side trip. If you have time, stop by the adoration chapel that has a monstrance with the tree of life image incorporated in it.

The place is a bit far from the beaten path, but the church is worth a visit. As many have noted, it is a Roman Catholic church designed with Javanese architecture and design sensibilities. It even features statues of Jesus and Mary as interpreted using traditional Javanese and old Hindu-style design elements.

Lots of places to have a quiet reflection, and worth a visit even if you're not a religious pilgrim. I wish the bathrooms were a bit cleaner and not so wet, but other than that this place is very much an awesome place to visit. It really is a one-of-a-kind space, and it's free! Donations are, as usual, welcome and recommended.

Very interesting Catholic church which accommodate rich Javanese arts and culture. Not only in the architecture but also in the liturgy. One can really feel being in Java there. The statues are all in Javanese design, there is a temple that doesn't look like a part of a church at all, gamelan music and liturgy songs that use Javanese style and language. Quiet peaceful ambiance make this church a great place for meditation. Really beautiful, unique spectacular church, one of a kind! Worth place to visit, even if one is not into religion.
