Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We were on a tour that took us by bus to this inland village of Ano Mera, known for the 16th century monastery and church, Panagia Tourliani and its marble bell tower. We had some Greek appetizers (keftedes, dolmades, fava, and Greek cheese on crostini) at a restaurant in the small town square, right in front of the monastery.

Just 8 kilometers from Mykonos Town, Ano Mera Village is the home of the Monastery of Panayia Toulianii. The drive itself is an experience in Greek culture and life beyond the touristy Mykonos Town.Bus service is available and inexpensive so a high priced tour is not necessary. Ano Mera Village has tavernas, mini-markets, a bakery and a few other small mom and pop shops but the centerpiece is the monastery which dates to 1542 and restored in 1767. There is a bell tower and marble fountain in the courtyard. The walls and monastery are whitewashed and add a wonderful backdrop to the beautiful flower boxes. Hours run 9-13 and 15:30-19:00. The interior is richly decorated in Byzantine/Renaissance icons, holy vessels and vestments and a wood-carved "temple" screen carved in Florence. After lunch in Ano Mera Village visit the Monastery of Paleokastro (12th century) and remains of a Byzantine castle which reside on a hill directly opposite the Monastery of Panayia Tourliani. August 15th is the day the Patron Saint is celebrated.

We hired a taxi driver to take us around to this site and also to a couple of beaches. Took an hour and cost us a total of 50 euros---well worth it, especially after reading some reviews that said the local bus system back to Mykonos Town was unreliable.
The driver also knew how to enter and get the nun to let us in the church. He said a monk lived upstairs, and that the nun took care of the place. The door is made of iron for protection historically, and if you stand directly under the door you can see a "spot" where somebody from upstairs could secretly pour hot oil on an unwelcome visitor (don't know how better to explain it, but I believe you'll understand when you see it).
The nun let us into the church after we entered the monastery. There in the middle of the church is a fairly unobtrusive metalwork picture, which our guide said was given in a dream to a monk, who subsequently built the monastery around it.
The backdrop is made of wood from Florence and apparently came already painted in gold.
It is customary and polite (but not mandatory) to leave a small donation on the table as you enter, maybe 1-2 euros.
A few steps above the monastery is a plaza, which is where the priest stands after the Easter Sunday service and speaks, then everybody celebrates together.
A most interesting hour.

Normally the tourists don't come to this side of Mykonos. Luckily we had taken a 3 hour private tour. Our guide cum driver Angelo brought us here. This beautiful monastery is located in Ano Mera about 8 km fro town. It was built in 16th century. It also has a small museum which has holy coins and original monastery bells. A small central square has got few restaurants few shops where hand made goods are sold made by local Greek women.
Worth spending 1/2 hours !!

The monastery came highly recommended by my hotel staff and pretty much every guide book I read.
Honestly, I wish I had skipped it. I had more than 3 hours to wait for the next bus out of Ano Mera and the church takes about 30 minutes to visit, max.
Ano Mera itself is tiny and uninteresting. I ended up going to 2 different restaurants just to kill time before leaving. What a waste of time.

A beautiful monastery where only monks live in Ano Mera of Mykonos.
We admired the wooden temple in the church, old icons and a marble fountain in the yard .
According tradition the old miraculous icon of Virgin Mary is considered to be painted by the Evangelist Luke.
What has been the picture is not catching the beetle because it is painted onto a sheet of wax and chewed gum of Chios, untouchable mix in insects.
It is closed after a specific time in the afternoon as it follows the monastery program.

It looks good on photos. That is it. It is not worth your time if you have other interesting things planned.

Only 1.80 euro on the bus from Old Port (bus's only every 2hrs, so make sure you know return time, because you will only need 2 hrs there). Excellent handmade, gift shop, and a handful of 'cheaper' than Mykonos restaurants. Not sure if you can go in the Monastery, but set in very pleasant position. Enjoyable, memorable visit.

The Monastery was nice to look at but probably not even worth the small entrance fee. No info whatsoever was provided and I wouldn't really bother to go back next time.

Is this still currently an orphanage? Would I be able to give donations (clothes) to poor kids?
Written 25 June 2019
Hi CSegaMaki. We saw only inside the church and the surrounding area i.e. Ano Mera square. There was no indication anywhere that it was still running as an orphanage or, indeed a nursing home which apparently it also was in times gone by. That said, behind the church and attached to it are a lot of buildings. I (mistakenly?) thought those were accommodations for the priest(s) and/or administration. Perhaps this is where the look after children. Apologies, but I do not know.
Perhaps it might be worth posting your question on Trip Advisor's Mykonos Forum. There is a destination expert there who might be able to help.

What is the appropriate attire when visiting monastery of Panagia Tourliani. Can shorts and sleeveless shirts be worn?
Written 5 June 2018
Hi Jeff, did you take a local bus, do a tour excursion or take a taxi there?
Thanks for your input

I took the bus from Mykonos city to Ano Mera. And the monastery is not far from the bus station
