- Manisha KPune, India28 contributionsBeautiful and scenic placeIt’s a beautiful and scenic place to spend a day. Gets really crowded on weekends, with students from nearby colleges as well as office employees of banks etc coming in large groups , resulting in long queues for the van which takes people from the entry gate to the actual site. The toilet facilities are almost nonexistent, which is really inconvenient. They should have pay and use toilet facilities so that people can get to use clean toilets and it will also help the locals to earn some money. Do book boating from their website before going so as to avoid long waiting hours. When I visited there was a 2 hrs waiting time as about 200 employees from a bank had booked the slots.Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 28 November 2023

We visited Banasura dam in December during Christmas holidays. I am hoping that our experience was the way it was due to usual holiday season rush and maybe at other times of the year, the overall experience is much better. When we visited, there was a traffic jam to get to the parking area. Then, there was a long wait in the queue for entry tickets followed by a longer queue to get into the van that takes you to the dam. We were tempted to climb up ourselves instead of waiting for the van but did not have the energy for the uphill walk. The views once you reach up are really good and one can enjoy the views despite the crowds. We thought of trying our luck at the queue ( yes, yet another queue) for boating. Though it was just around 2 pm, we got to know after waiting for 20 minutes that all the boating tickets for the day were already sold out. So, after spending some time walking around, we decided to return and instead of waiting in another queue for the return shuttle van, we chose to walk downhill.
We could see a zipline setup along the length of the dam but chose to skip that queue.
Note: do spend some time admiring the structure of the dam itself as it is the largest earth dam in India

Dam view resturant is nearest restaurant to banasaura dam, that's reason take advantage of, food is not at all good, they show you nice pictures of fish with price and later serve you some other fish and cheat on price saying it's per fish price , while initially they say price per plate.
We were told Rs 120 per plate for fish later charged Rs 480 .
I recommend you to have food other restaurants before reaching the Banasaura dam.
But Banasaura dam is must view spot if you go to wayanada.

A very brief but enjoyable visit. It was almost 5 PM when we reached the dam having started our day with a visit to Edakkal Caves.
We even debated whether it was worth a 3+ hours drive for a very short visit
We definitely feel it was well worth the time when we stood and walked on the top of the dam with wind blowing into our hair and watching the sunset while motor boats went around the lake at the bottom
The department runs frequent shuttle services from the base of the dam to the top
The entrance / exit area has a carnival like atmosphere
Will I go back again? A definite yes keeping more time for the dam and the water body

We reached this place by 11:00 AM and after going around the dam we wanted to take a boat ride and were near ticket counter by 11.30 AM just to see the staff hanging a board saying counter will be opened only after 2.30 PM.. This was crazy with kids around there were no hotels or restaurants around. To have food and coming back again you have again entrance ticket. As most of the hotels is situated outside.

The entry ticket is 30/- per head. Further, there is a van service to take to the top and the return ticket is 20/- per head. Some people walk and climb the steps. One gets a nice view of the dam/catchment area. Nothing much to do except walk and look around.

It's a beautiful place to spend an amazing evening amidst nature. Its a huge place built so well. There is an entry charge of 40 rupees. Also there is a bus service also to take you to the top where there is a huge garden, forest, and many activities.
There is a gaming zone also near the entrance.
You can enjoy water activities like speed boat (1000rs for a boat with 5people), coracle ride(450 rupees for a coracle for a couple) , kayaking. There is also a fish spa at the nominal price of 100rupees. There is zip lining also named Muddy boots.
There are wooden swings amidst the trees which can be enjoyed by kids as well as adults.

How is the road conditions from Sultan Bathery till Banasura Hill Resort. Is it safe for new drivers ? Which route to take while coming from Bangalore. Please suggest.
Written 3 January 2019
For new drivers it LL be tough to drive in this route. Otherwise it is safe to drive at present. I don't know the route much but while you are coming from Bangalore , take gundalpet to Sultan Bathery road to reach Vythri. From there, you have to take a diversion to reach Banasura Dam. We had visited from Nilambur to kalpetta then to Banasura dam.

what is the best time to visit Banasura dam
Written 1 November 2017
Both winter and monsoon. During monsoon you can enjoy the rain and clouds while boating. Moreover the most weather will Enchant your senses. In winter it is a clear weather with the green forest and hills clearly visible. During winter you can stay at the dam for a long time as rains won't hinder your trip. Moreover the chilling weather would be great to enjoy. I would prefer the winter season the most.

Around 700 for a boat. 4-5 person can be accommodated. It is very reasonable per person and 20 minutes ride. Do it when you are there.
