While at bikaner me and my wife suddenly decided to visit the Gajner palace and the wildlife sanctuary. We were not aware of what to expect and had assumed that we will be allowed to go in our car. The gajner palace is converted into a hotel. At the reception we came to know that we are allowed to visit the sanctuary only in the hotel's jeep manned by their escort. The cost is Rs. 2500 for a one hour ride.
The open jeep ride though was wonderful and my wife was ecstatic with joy ! While there are no real wild animals, we were lucky to spot some deer and foxes. December is the right time to visit this place.

Located near the Gajner palace the sanctuary can be visited by hiring a vehicle at the palace. The animals that can be spotted here are cheetal, spotted deer, black buck and wild boar. Good outing for a day and a great place for wild life photographers. However budget hotels are a located about 60km away from this location in Bikaner.

The wildlife safari in the open jeep is truly amazing. The food at the palace hotel is also good. 1 hour worth spending.

Having got up at the crack of dawn, full of anticipation of lovely walks through the forest by the lake, or even a little off road driving through the sanctuary in the jeep, this was a complete let down. The driver just took us on the main road, stopping short of the lake, and turning round to come back again. We saw two deer, a lot of cows and a man on a motorbike. The trip was less than an hour and the hotel charges a whopping Rs 3,000 for this. Even worse, on the way back, I asked the driver to go a little off the road so that I could take a photo of the Gajner Palace hotel through the trees. We chanced across a group of wild boar (at least, I think they were wild boar - could just have been regular pigs). The area was littered with rubbish - cans, bottles, plastic, etc. and one of the poor animals had his hoof stuck in a can. We pointed this out to the driver, but he just shrugged. I am an animal lover and this really upset me - in fact, I couldn't get the image out of my head for a few days. If this is a sanctuary, surely the least the management can do is make sure the area is clear of rubbish and objects that can harm the wildlife. Don't waste your money!

Very good destination with some common wildlife. It is jewel in nature. If you are traveling by road from Bikaner to Jaisalmer than it would be approx 55 km from Bikaner towards Jaisalmer.

The rickety Jeep was music and wild boars run fast. Real fast. We tried to chase a few. It was wonderful.

Just under an hours drive around the sanctuary. Very little wildlife as we did not go off road until the end when my sister requested to take a photo. Came across a pack of wild boars but surroundings were full of rubbish. One of the boars had its back foot trapped in a metal can from the rubbish. Very upsetting. Reported it to the hotel who assured us they would deal with it.
Could be a beautiful place if looked after properly and able to go off road to spot any possible wildlife sadly missing in our experience. Better to walk around the extensive grounds. Saw peacocks and birds and a monkey and a boar in the grounds.

We were three adults planning to go from Bikaner to Gajner fort. Since one can make it to this place only through cab or personal vehicle it costed us approx 1500 for a round trip. Once we reached we got to know that there is only one safari jeep which charges Rs. 3500 for one hour. And at the hotel for visiting lake and temple Rs. 250 each has to be paid. No doubt the palace is good surrounded by greens but definitely not worth spending this much of money.

Arrived in the dark, but had a half-hour bird-watching before breakfast and saw eagles, parakeets, and other species. Quiet and beautiful time.
