It is mesmerizing and unbelievable when you look at the unique landscape in Lamayuru. This is popularly known as the ‘Moonland of Ladakh’. It is found in Lamayuru which is a village located at approximately 100km driving distance from Leh, in Kargil Leh highway. The moon like topography is unique and is believed to be created by drying of a huge lake. Trust me, we were super excited because it looked gorgeous and for a moment we felt like we are in an entirely different country.
The landscapes on the way from Leh to Lamayuru are extraordinarily beautiful and we wanted to stop at so many places. Lamayuru is also famous for its very old monastery. Some parts are in good condition, other ruins are preserved well. There are few home stays here and one budget stay is right outside the monastery gate. Needless to say, the view is amazing from the monastery and one the way while going up to the monastery.

This historic monastery built on side of mountain near retreat cave of famous Buddhist sage.
The trip to this area is fascinating. Moonland. Staying in local hotel with amazing views added to the experience. It is worth staying more than one night. A pilgrim and photographers dream

Better to do if you are coming from sriNagar. Its probably not worth doing almost a day trip from LEH. Other Day trips are better.

After visiting Liker and Alchi monastery I reached Lamayuru monastery which is one of the oldest monasteries of Ladakh. Lamayuru is situated at a height from the road(NH 1A) level and the surroundings were seen beautifully from atop the monastery. Inside the monastery we found the idol of Lord Buddha alike other monasteries but the fresco on the inside walls were simply magnificent. The moonland or moonscape was being visible from the terrace of the monastery. Therefore every Ladakh visitor must have a visit of Lamayuru.

Lamayuru ~ though this is our second trip to Leh but we visited this place for the first time and it felt like we are totally in a different world the world where only peace breathtaking landscapes simplicity exists. This place totally bowled us over and we never in our life saw a place like this....the stark brown mountains the meandering blue river the magical blue sky made us feel that we humans are nothing to Mother Nature..it is her wish that we were able to see a place like Lamayuru..the monastery was magical the views behind the monastery felt straight out of the moon landscape. While standing there what we felt was only gratitude...yes that’s the enormousness of the place.

Lamayuru represented the next to the last stop of an 11 day trip through the Himalayas. While we were fortunate enough to pass by a few monasteries on our journey, Lamayuru was, for me, the most impressive.

It was the largest for sure and housed the most monks.

I was happy to participate in a few prayer ceremonies while I was here and also to taste the butter tea that the monks prepare and serve throughout the day. Brace yourself for the first sip, but know that it may grow on you if you push through and finish the whole cup.

There's something so wondrous about being able to see places like this; especially if you're used to city or beach resort vacations.

Something like this has to be earned and it will not be easy getting here or experiencing all it has to offer, but if you do make it, be prepared for an experience that will leave an indelible mark on your life.

I highly recommend this adventure!! (And Adventure in General) ;-)

Lamayuru is home to one of the oldest monasteries in Ladakh, dating back to the 10th century. Local legend has it that the place was once a lake that dried up. Lamayuru village is located at a distance of 125 km from Leh on the Leh–Srinagar National Highway. Any vehicle going from Leh to Kargil or onto Srinagar will invariably pass through Lamayuru.

This was my 4th Ladakh visit & negotiated Lamayaru on Leh- Srinagar highway twice but this time in Feb to see frozen Ladakh,On 05/02/2019 driving along frozen Indus river. Lunar landscape was changing every moment.Perhaps this was my last Ladakh of my life. I was stunned to see frozen beauty of Ladakh.
Visiting Ladakh & Lamayaru is a life time achievement.
