It's enough stirring feeling when you see the passage of the ship through water gates for the first time in your life. Anyway you can't miss it if you decide to go by car or by bus through Russian (Brusnichnoye)-Finnish (Nuijamaa) border.

A man-made waterway that connects one of Europe's biggest lakes to Russia, completed in 1967, the Saimaa Canal is a physical remnant of Finland's post-war balancing act between East and West and a symbol of the country's longing for its lost region of the Carelian Isthmus.

We had never been to Russia and did not want to deal with visas. So we took the one-day cruise from Lappeenranta to Vyborg on the M.S. Carelia. The pretty canal has 8 locks dropping 260 feet. The cruise was 5.5 hours each way with 3 hours to wander around Vyborg (enough time for us). On the ship, we were... More

If You visit Lappeenranta during summertime, Saimaa Canal is worth seeing. Easy 2-hour Cruise is possible almost every day few times. Some history, and beautiful views.

Ships leave from the harbour of Lappeenranta and travels around lake Saimaa. There is lots of history behind the route the ship makes during the trip. There is so much to see and the trip isn't that long so you will not get bored easily. Very nice especially at a sunny day but if you have umbrella then even rain... More

i have been here many times before, you can catch fish as much as you want, and every other minute a fish will remain in your hook. it's amazing,, on summer you can have swims, but only if there is not much circulation of water or it might get dangerous.

Quite narrow canal from Baltic Sea to Lake Saimaa. You should definitely see one of the 8 locks, 3 of them are in Finland. Lock "Mälkiä" is the closest one to city "Lappeenranta" and the biggest, with 12.4m difference in water level. You can reach locks easily by car. It's quite amazing when 80 meter long and 12 meters wide... More

We took the three-day visa-free cruise to St. Petersburg. The distinction between the on-board and ground experiences was a jarring one. Starting with the ground experiences, Saimaa Travel does an excellent job of managing online communications (e.g., prompt and clear answers to e-mails). The check-in process in Lappeenranta is smooth, and we were extremely pleased with the ground experience in... More

Very interesting with the canal, how it works to overcome the difference of 77 metres between Lappeenranta at the lake Saimaa, the starting point, and Vyborg on the sea side. The boat is small with steep steps everywhere, definitely not people with weak knees. The cruise to Vyborg was well organized and the cruise leader did a good job being there... More
