Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I frequent visiting this location mainly due to how close it is, how pretty the place is and how peaceful it is. It is a fabulous spot to just unwind and relax.
It is located in the town of Forrest and is quite well signposted.
You travel down a well maintained bitumen road to a large car park area.
There are coin operated barbeques, seats and a toilet block located near the carpark.
A quick tip bring your own toilet paper if you wish to use these toilets and they are not always clean.
There's a walk that leads you upto a big concrete wall around the reservoir but small children will struggle to see over it unless they stand on the platform half way along the wall.
At the end of the wall is the spill way which is great to see in winter when there's been alot of rain but not worth checking out in the dry seasons.
Down the bottom there are numerous paths that lead along a little creek with plenty of space for kids to run and explore and it is very well maintained. You could easily explore the bottom area for a good 45 minutes.
Near the toilet block there is a bushwalk that branches off in a few different directions with lots of ferns and colourful birds.
There is fishing allowed from the dam wall. In the nearby town of Forrest there are cleaner toilets aswell as a milbar where you can buy drinks etc.

West Barwon Reservoir is a really nice place to go for a walk - can walk from Forrest township and along the river to the reservoir; or you can take the Ferntree Gully walk too; or plenty of bike paths around. The reservoir itself has nice areas for sitting down under a shady tree for a picnic, or just watching from the Dam walls.
Barwon Water and Landcare have just done a massive tree planting effort around the place too, so will definitely come back to see how that progresses!

Great little quiet stop for a picnic, look at the water from the top of the reservoir or go down and throw in a line.
Not really much else to do here but it is free
Reservoir only half full due to lack of rain and drought conditions plus summer.

One of the many highlights of our visit to Forrest, off the road just up from Forrest itself, pleasant walk around the perimeter to brush away the cobwebs!

Good to visit in autumn when the deciduous trees are turning and there's not much wind.
We had planned a walk around Lake Elizabeth but the road was closed while being re-gravelled. We wandered up to the reservoir dam wall instead and enjoyed reading the interpretation panels. I imagine this area would be quite popular for summer barbeques and picnics.

We were in Forrest overnight so decided to venture to this place as there isn't much on trip advisor for the area. However we were disappointed. Really nothing much to see and a bit disappointing.

We drove into the picnic area near the Barwon Reservoir and found it fairly uninspiring especially seeing it was a fairly bleak day. It may be a nice picnic spot if the sun is shining and winds are light but I think there are nicer spots to be found. Worth popping in and judging for yourself.

It’s very rare to find a reservoir so close to a town. Within walking distance of Forrest. Features great bushwalking opportunities and is a great spot for fishing or birdwatching

We walked to the dam from Forrest and it was a lovely walk. The dam itself impressive especially as one has the view from downstream which is very unusual. One really gets the sense of the height of a dam this way. We walked back to Forrest on the opposite side of the stream/river in a broad valley with meadows and forest. Very pretty and tranquil. Our impression was that the trails in the area a very well marked and maintained. We ran into the occasional bike rider. P.S. There are lots of flies but that seems the norm in the Australian countryside.

A nice little spot for a walk.
Fern Gully Walk is nice and starts near the entrance and finishes down at the dam wall.
There is a loop below the dam wall.
Red Carpet MTB trail is also in here.
