About
The Nam Et-Phou Louey National Park is the largest protected area in Laos! The NEPL National Park is unique in it's rich wildlife biodiversity supporting a wide range of species, including six wild cat species, critically endangered Northern White Cheeked Gibbons, two bear species, and many more. Wildlife Ecotourism has been developed to provide additional livelihood opportunities for local people and the activities have been designed to create a direct link between conservation and tourism whereby the income generated by visitors acts as an incentive for local people to support the protection of wildlife. The NGO Wildlife Conservation Society provides technical support to the National Park Management Unit since 2013.

We had several incredible adventures in Nam Et Phou Louey. I highly recommend to go there for wildlife observation and sightseeing.

In January 2021, we experienced the Night Safari. Our trip down the river on a boat at night was magical. The team welcoming and guiding us in the Natural Park was very nice and skilled. The rangers were helpful spotting the wildlife, even in the dark!

We appreciated so much that we came back for the 'Nam Et Phou Louey loop' in January 2022, with dirt motorbikes . The loop led us through Hiem and Xone districts, with amazing views along the way. We particularly appreciated visiting the Phou Pati mountain, before heading to the Pathet Lao caves in Viengxay.

In Hiem, don't hesitate to go to the visitor center, where the national park team will give you a nice introduction and useful infos. The Hot Springs located closeby are a great local experience!

Truly an adventure. We were interested in birds and Souvith, our guide, had the skills and the knowledge to shows us some sought after species like the Brown Fish Owl and the Blyth's Kingfisher. The safari was well organized and the two boatsmen did a great job negotiating the rapids. I won’t easily forget floating at night down the river. We saw some Sambar deer and a Binturong, but the highlight was a big Brown Fish Owl.

Hands down the most amazing outdoor exploration I've had in Laos! We felt so close to nature and were lucky to spot a 7-8ft long Burmese Python just metres away. The boatmen and guide were great - friendly and responsible - and the place was just full of stories, culture and wonderfully preserved biodiversity. Would visit again in a heartbeat!

A great experience, set deep in the heart of the jungle, the Night Safari was one of the best experiences in Laos. The expertise of the guides, the accommodation, the food, and of course the night safari were far beyond what I expected.

Fantastic, beautiful, fascinating boat trip on the Mekong, upstream in daylight, drifting downstream in the dark. Boats expertly handled by locals who obviously know the river intimately. Scenery of riverside and very steep hills covered with jungle and showing fields cleared for shifting cultivation. Guide informative and answered questions. Dinner cooked on wood fire in the evening very good and catered to vegetarians. On this Safari do not expect to see tigers on the river bank! We saw deer, owls, large lizard and three sets of glowing eyes, one identified as civet. Boatmen expected more. But the ride was worth it without animals. We did the home stay in the village where the boat trip begins and ends. We were fed, given tea and a place to sleep and left alone to watch the river and the life of the village. (On the village tour, you will learn much more if you ask questions.) We are in our late 60s and found everything easy and comfortable.

We had an amazing experience on the Nam Et-Phou Louey night safari. The ride on the boat to the camp is an experience in itself. The boatmen are the real stars of the show; their skill at negotiating the many rapids, twists and turns of the river are outstanding.
We enjoyed everything about the trip. The excellent lunch, the trek through the jungle, our little hut out in the jungle, even the freezing cold shower!
The highlights were the dinner around the campfire where the guide relayed old tribal stories to us and then the actual night river safari. Our boatman was an absolute star, he spotted a 3 metre python on the riverbank, bearing in mind that it was dark and they only had spotlights and he was steering the boat at the same time, this was phenomenal! He also spotted civet cats and deer. We didn’t expect to see much wildlife, so these were all a bonus.
We would certainly recommend the night safari, it is a fabulous experience.

Trekking in this new national park is a great experience. Nature preserved, sounds of the forest where you can feel how we are part of it. Special thanks also to the team of experienced guides and the villages people who contribute to this adventure

We made the 4 days clouds mountain challenging trek! Very strong experience the first day, that we spent with a family in a village. We shared very nice moments without a word!
The trek is not so difficult if you are use to hike in the mountain and the way up to the summit is beautiful. The way down is magic with primary forest. A dream........
