I highly appreciated visiting the caves. It was a great moment to learn more on Lao History and culture. The caves are impressive, the visit is well organized, the information given are useful and clear. The houses of the leaders are also interesting in terms of architecture. I recommend taking the audioguide.

In the dry season, apparently only a few visitors. I had a personal tour guide and this whole week had only counted 5 visitors. It is an interesting place, the English level of the tour guide's was low, the audio tour was from Lao perspective content-wise strong. International perspective was lacking.

Being a teenager in the Vietnam war era, I have always taken an interest in the period. It was interesting to get an insight into the lives of the 30,000 people who lived in the area and survived by hiding in hundreds of limestone caves. I was further inspired to visit after reading the Dr Siri books by Colin Cotterrill which are set in Laos.

I arrived unsure what to expect and left more than impressed.
The Caves are a must see while visiting the area, maybe even the main reason vor visiting.
The tour costs you a fair 60.000 Kip (about 6€) and comes with a guide and an english audio guide. Especially the audio guide contributes the experience as it provides you with plenty of historic information on americas secret war in lao out if the laotian perspective.

The tour will lead you through different caves giving you a fair impression what life in these years must have meant for the people and on how things developed towards todays Laos.

It’s more than worth the while.

The superb audioguide that you get to accompany your tour of these ,caves, where 20,000 Pathet Lao hid for 9 years as American / Royal Lao Government bombs rained down around them is history written by the victors but, however you paint it, their tale is an epic one of survival and eventual victory against massive odds. It is not easy to get out to Vieng Xai from the usual tourist towns in the west. Count on a minimum of three days for a round trip coming via Phonsvan and or Nong Khiaw, but it is well worth it. The scenery that you pass through and the lives of others that you witness from the road are similarly unforgettable. Highly recommended if you have the time. Both Phonsavan (Plain of Jars) and Nong Khiaw are superb too.

The caves were used by resistance forces during the bombings that Laos suffered in the VietNam war. Very little if any information was provided at the time as all military activities in Laos were performed very secretly.
The caves were built to protect the resistance forces that for years sustained the local farmers and villagers who suffered daily bombings just because the HoChiMinh trail passed on their land. Very instructive, a must see for anyone interested in history!
Very well maintained with excellent guided (also audio guide) tours.

The effort of getting to this fairly inaccessible part of Laos is well worth it. We visited at a quiet time with few other people so it was easy to appreciate the atmosphere and reflect on the history. The audio guide is very good, supplemented by a very willing young local guide. Allow 2-3 hours.

A great way to relive the recent Lao history and the lives of the Viet Minh during the 1964 - 74 war. Guide was ok but it is mostly done with audio guides now. Well worth the trip

Booked a tuc-tuc to take us there and back and ended up sharing with a family on the way back as they had no other way of returning to Sam Neua. Well organized office, great bikes, great audio guide. We missed the 2 official tours (early morning and early afternoon) so joined with the above mentioned family on what they call a private tour. Not much more expensive when shared. The guide is needed to open the caves, switch on lights and give a bit more information.

A poignant visit to the Caves, inhabited by so many people for so many years while America poured High Explosive onto the country.
This is a testament to determination.

The Caves are sparse but the Audio Tour is vital. This gives better understanding of a war we never knew about until it was over.
