For my study and for curiosity, I took a brief trip to Culion in January. It becomes one of my most unforgetble experience in South East Asia. To walk on the street of Culion in the dawn is amazing; you seem to go back through time and appreciate the ways the local people lived in the early 20th century. The... More

We spent 3 nights and 2 days on Culion island. We didn't have much information about the island before we visited (just a paragraph or two in the Rough guide) but were lucky to be introduced (via tour operator Vivian of Coron Divers in Coron town - tel 0948 541 6570) to Pastor Herme Villanueva, who is a volunteer guide... The museum showcases the history of the island and how it became a haven for lepers. The tour guide we got was actually a grandson of a leper so he was able to narrate some personal experiences. The only problem I had in this place was the ventilation of the rooms. It was very hot while we were looking at... More

It took me back many years ago when Culion was the dumping place for lepers. It has many memorabilia like pictures, coins, list of Culion Sanitarium directors, map and other articles. It is a must see to understand the discovery of the treatment through research that freed people from Leprosy.

Nice island which can still be considered as 'off the beaten track' really easy to go there by boat from Coron. A lot of history which is represented in the museum and around town by informative signs. Nice, chill and historical get away

I brought my mom and aunts to Calamianes Islands visiting the islands of Coron, Busuanga and Culion. Among the many tourists places we visited, this was their favorite. Not only did they validate their information on history, they felt emotional as we journeyed back in time seeing and reading history. There are tricycles but it is much better to walk... More

Culion museum shows the beauty of the whole island and its past. Being a leper colony from the time of the american occupation. Collection of pictures of patients showing on how they became a community who govern themselves. I wasn't able to take pictures of whats inside the museum because our tourguide told us not to.

If the history of the Leper Colony interests you, then this is a must. You have to buy your ticket in the main hospital admin building and then walk up the hill to the former leper research laboratory, which is now the museum. It's just such a shame that the damp in the building is having a big effect on... More

This is the former leper colony of the Philippines, and where the cure was originally found. It was heartbreaking to see how the lepers were separated from their families, forbidden to mingle with the opposite sex, and certainly forbidden courtship and marriage. Their children were taken at birth, and the parents could visit them once a week, looking through a... More

It was a Sunday so we didnt expect we can visit the museum since it is closed on Sundays.. BUT.. our kind hosts were able to make arrangements and VOILA!!... it was opened especially for us!! :) I am personally grateful for this chance to finally see what's inside this building because since we were assigned to Culion's medical mission...
