We went to cookery school on the last night of our trip to Thailand before our holiday was cut short by Covid 19. We were collected from our hotel and taken on an interesting excursion. We visited a local market full of colour and an exciting range of every sort of fruit veg and creature you can imagine. We chose our ingredients together and learned about different herbs and spices and combinations of flavours. At the school we were taken through the preparation of the food and taught how to create a truly authentic Thai supper ... with a chilled Thai beer. Great end to our adventure.

Hotel booked us this tour and it was great. Half day tour. First you go to the local market and buy some products that you will use. Then on to the school were we all made 4 different dishes ( a soup, pad Thai, a curry and dessert). Everyone gets to make there own with the teacher helping everyone and explaining different techniques. You get to eat your food after you finish each one. Food was amazing. All staff were very helpful and nice.

I visited Chiang Mai last month with my extended family of seven people, ranging in age from 9 to 75 years old. We had an absolutely perfect experience learning about Thai cuisine and then cooking several dishes.

We began at a local market where we learned about the many interesting vegetables and fresh foods available in Thailand. We then went back to the kitchen to learn more. Our chef/teacher was a lovely woman named Khwan who was very patient with us as we learned the basics of Thai cuisine. We made a curry, spring rolls, pad thai and coconut soup. Khwan allowed each of us to customize those dishes with our favorite proteins including tofu for the vegetarians in our group.

In addition, Khwan tailored her instructions for the audience. Our 75 year old was getting a bit tired and Khwan immediately brought over a chair and allowed mom to participate in the remainder of the class while seated.

If you only go to one cooking class while visiting Thailand, make it Baan Hongnual. Request Khwan as your teacher and you can not go wrong. I plan to visit them again on my next trip to Chiang Mai.

We (I was there with my wife and two daughters aged 8 and 12) booked this particular school as they were one of the few in the area that would accept 8 year olds.
As a consequence of our visit both my daughters are now keen to try their new cooking skills on our friends!
We were collected from our hotel and met up with our fellow cooks-to-be (6 ladies from Holland) and were initially driven to a local market were out guide/chef took us through buying the produce for the evening's meals. A Thai market to someone from Europe is an eye opener.
After buying the produce we headed off to the school and all got kitted out in our chef's clothes. After instruction we were guided through the creation of our first dish (soup) followed by Pad Thai. Then we all sat down to eat our delicious efforts. Next we made a curry followed by spring rolls all under supervision, important to us when one has an 8 year old with a hot steel wok and a meat cleaver.
We spent more or less 4 hours on the course and all came away with a cook book, an eagerness to create similar food back home and full tummies.
A GREAT afternoon/evening out. Highly recommended .

The Baan Hongnual Thai cookery school is located a little bit outside the Chiang Mai city, in the Thai country side. The surroundings therefore were very peaceful and natural. This distance is not a problem since the school sends you a shuttle bus to the hotel for pick up, and it takes only 15-20 minutes to arrive. On the day my family and I made Pad Thai, a Thai soup, Green Curry chicken, and Thai style fried rice. We made four dishes because we chose the 1/2 day cooking class (in the full day class you will make 6 courses!). This class taught us how easy Thai cooking can be. However there are also many, many 'tricks of the trade', that were taught to us on the day, which I am sure the other more 'commercial' Thai cooking classes may neglect. Our instructor, Pam, was very kind and gentle which made the cooking class have a nice and easy flow it. Finally at the end of the day, a Thai cook book was given to us which had all the recipes we cooked on the day and much more.

Overall this cooking class at Baan Hongnual was highly rewarding and enjoyable. Should any tourist happen to pass through Chiang Mai, I would recommend them to attend this cooking class. And should I happen to go back to Chiang Mai, I will certainly go there once more.

Amporn is a wonderful host and teacher. We really enjoyed the tour of the market to buy the food for the cooking class. She explaned all the interesting and wonderful ingrediants available in Thailand.

She did a wonderful job of explaining all the procedures for the hands on cooking of the complete meal we picked.

I am a Registered Dietitian and would highly recommend a cooking class with her.

We did a cooking class as an option on a tour we were on. It was a really great experience. They picked us up at our hotel and dropped us off in the old town area of Chiang Mai so we could go to a few temples. The cooking itself was a highlight of our trip. We went to the market to see how it worked & picked up a few fresh items. We each had our own burner and wok along with the ingredients to make each dish. We had choices that we could make and as we finished each dish, we ate it. The food was great and by dessert we were stuffed. At the end we were given a cook book that had some of the dishes we had made. Well worth the cost, this was a very good value and I highly recommend it.

This tour is a must! The five of us were the only people in the group on a Sunday, which made it even better. We were picked up at the hotel and rode to the market. This was an experience in itself. I've never seen such a variety of food- so many vegetables, fruits, spices. The area with the meat was so interesting. The fresh seafood (the clams were still moving), poultry and beef. We proceeded to the cooking school. The facility was very clean, organized and well laid out. Our instructor was informational about the ingredients, recipes, and technique. She had a very good personality and conversation about the market and area was enjoyable. There were a couple ladies who prepped the items we bought at the market and kept things tidy and the flow smooth. After sampling our dishes, we toured the grounds quickly. Alcoholic beverages are available for purchase. We went in June and the weather was very hot and even more so around the flames. Dress as light as possible. Very enjoyable.

I was booked in with my wife to do the full day 6 dish course. My wife is not so much of a cook and had been booked in buy the travel agent by mistake. Well that was lucky for everyone. I was with a really good mob on a tour but they'd only booked for half a day 4 dishes. AmPon was generous enough to accommodate my extra two dishes into their day and we shared the experience. Everyone won. AmPon was a delight. Well structured lessons. Perfect English. Patient. Charming. And she even taught kak handed me to roll perfect spring rolls. the Tom Yam Goon (hot sour soup) was so easy and so tasty it will become part of my daily repertoire. A very enjoyable day.
