My friends and I went to see the 9th largest buddha statue in the world, just today. The scorching sun was unforgiving. Make sure to bring sunblock, water and make sure to have your own vehicle as it is hard to find a ride.

A beautiful temple complex to visit. If you ever wanted to take a peek of hell, this might give you insight as there are many displayed of what it might be. The large, golden Buddha is amazing to see. The grounds in the complex are impeccable and easy to navigate.

Note: I was travelling with a Thai but I can't see how the below could fail if you've got a smile on your face...........
You need to get to a town called Ang Thong (around two hours out of Bangkok).
1/ Get to Victory Monument sky train station BKK.
2/ Look for all the small white mini buses and say 'Ang Thong' (the buses have no English on them - this is how the Thai's travel)
3/ When you're at the mini bus you pay the driver up front (was 100 baht each person)
4/ The down side of this way is that you don't leave until the bus is full (we waited 30 minutes).
5/ You'll get dropped off in central Ang Thong (everybody gets off)
6/ From there the only transport we could find was motorbike. You just say 'wat muang' and they'll know where you want. Cost about 100 baht each getting there (including tip)
7/ We got the motorbike drivers phone number so called them when we wanted to be picked up (we stayed about two hours) and taken back to where the mini bus leaves for BKK but I think if you just say 'Ang Thong' and 'Bangkok' to the stall holders at the Wat they'll find someone who'll take you back to Ang Thong for 100 - 200 baht.
Good luck!

The largest Buddha statue in Thailand is located at Wat Muang in Angtong. Surrounded by picturesque rice fields, it rises out of the countryside like a golden titan. It is located at Mu 6, Tambon Huataphan, approximately 8 kilometers from downtown Angtong (2 hours from Bangkok) on Hwy 3195 on the left. Completed in 2008, the Buddha called Phra Buddha Maha Nawamin, is 300 feet (92 meters) tall and 200 feet wide (63 meters). It is the 9th tallest statue in the world and may be the worlds biggest seated Buddha statue. It is roughly twice the size of the Big Buddha (150 feet high by 80 feet wide)in Phuket. It is also twice as tall as the Statue of Liberty which comes in at 151 feet (46m), not including the pedestal on which it stands. The Buddha is made of cement and painted a shiny metallic gold to imitate gold leaf. The inside of the statue is only open on Saturdays and Sundays 9:00 a.m. to 17:00 pm. The grounds contain a museum, several areas to make merit, and a theme park that depicts larger than life size versions of Buddhist hell. There are statues depicting a Thai- Burmese battle, complete with painted cement battle elephants. The wat also contains the largest depictions of lotus petals in the world. Wat Muang contains many sacred objects to the Buddhist faith and the largest silver Buddha statue in the country. Several areas to buy amulets and other religious souvenirs are available.
Depictions of Buddhist hell are graphic and may not be suitable for children. Sinners in hell have oversized genitalia and often show horrific scenes of torture. Adulterers are forced to climb a tree of spikes while being tormented by wild dogs and demons with sharpened sticks. Drug addicts are forced to drink boiling lava?. Liars get their tongue ripped out with large metal hooks. Thieves are sawed in half. And general evil doers are boiled alive in large cauldrons. It was enough to give me nightmares.
Wat Muang is not the easiest place to find but you will be rewarded with a promising excursion from Bangkok without swarms of tourists. There are few foreigners, most are pilgrims from other parts of Thailand or Asia. Remember that this is a religious site, please dress and behave accordingly. Knees and arms must be covered. There will be an area in front of the big Buddha and outside the temples to remove your shoes, please do so out of respect.
One of the downsides of this attraction is that there are no signs (or guidebook) giving information on what is depicted. It is a lovely place to walk around and is very photogenic but some people, especially foreign tourists like myself, may have a hard time understanding what an image represents. Without an inside perspective on Thai culture, legends, and the Buddhist religion to decipher the meaning of the statues, it is just a big Buddha and gruesome figures. . I was lucky to have a semi-local to explain things. I don’t think I would have gotten as much out of the experience and the grounds if I was not guided along.

July 2014.
I followed Ashregister's tips and got to Wat Muang fairly easily. I went to victory monument, found the white minivans and asked around for Ang Thong. A lady took me to a ticket guy I think who knew exactly what I was asking for. I also waited in the mini van for 30 minutes (8 am - 8:30). The A/C is running so it's not bad. There were 14 seats, but he left when he had 8 people. (The minivans might just leave every 30 minutes?)
In Ang Thong it drops you off right near a 7-11. I asked a few people there and they got me a motorbike taxi on the street and he took me to Wat Muang for 60 baht.
The temple itself is very cool. I was there for probably an hour and a half. There are no motorbike or taxis to take you back. I asked the security guy and he called out to the people working food stalls I think if anyone wanted to take me. One guy took me back for 100 baht. Oh well.
Now I hadn't seen anything online about getting from Ang Thong to Ayyuthaya. I told the guy to drop me off at Ang Thong Hotel, thinking that would be best place to speak with someone with English. They could not speak very well English at all lol, but they knew what I was asking for. The Ang Thong minivan terminal is probably a 5-10 minute walk from the hotel, but the guy working there took me on his motorbike for free (it's that close). I got a minivan from Ang Thong to Ayyuthaya for 30 baht. The minivan left with only me and 1 other person, waited less than 15 minutes.
All the sites in Ayutthaya were also great.
You COULD do this all in one day (BKK - Ang Thong - Ayutthaya - BKK) and make it back to Bangkok. I didn't. I wanted to spend a night in Ayutthaya and relax a bit. But you COULD do it.
This is a fantastic weekend trip from the city. I will repeat when I have friends or family visit.

Wat Muang is home to a 92 meters tall statue of the sitting Buddha, located in Phai Cham Sin (8 km from Ang Thong).
It's a huge temple complex and visiting may take more than 3 hours, so go there early in the morning, not to be trapped by Sun. Within the temple compound, there are depictions of heaven and hell, and a huge statue of Guan Yin.
The Lord Buddha statue stands 92 m high & 63 m wide. The Great Buddha of Thailand is the currently tallest statue in Thailand, the 2nd tallest statue in Southeast Asia. The Great Buddha was completed in 2008 after 18 years. It is made of concrete and is painted gold. The Buddha image is in the seated posture called Maravijaya Attitude.
According to the Buddhist's belief if you pray “Luang Pho Yai at Wat Muang", It will bless you to be successful in your life.
I went to Wat Muang from Pattaya by a rental car. The route was more than 250 km long and we got there 4 hours later. Whole road to the temple was very nice and green.
Before you get to the Wat Muang, the large Buddha image is visible from a long distance which depicts the beautiful panoramic view of the golden Buddha image amidst the vast green fields. The Golden Buddha image of Wat Muang is really grand, glorious and glittering.
Near the temple complex there's a local market that sells Thai and sacred souvenirs and visitors’ necessities like hand fan, hats & ... . There's a section for eatables near the temple complex but the place is not very clean and the food doesn't have very good quality.
If you are residing in Bangkok or Pattaya, I highly recommend you to visit Wat Muang and the Biggest Buddha image of Thailand.

Bizarre collection of hellish scenes with the biggest Buddha I’ve ever seen. A very worth while stopping place but somewhat strange and at times disturbing. We called in here to see the massive Buddha! Well worth seeing if your in the area it’s immense. A little in front of it however are some creepy and bloody sculptures of torture scenes. As before well worth a visit but a little gruesome !

This is a great Buddha in Thailand the one very tallest Buddha of Thailand located at Wat Muang Monastery AngThong Province Thailand. Great Buddha of Thailand is the 9th Tallest statues in the world. It's my pleasure to get this place and I saw it in my eyes and took so many pictures. I saw a very uniques sculpture and more statues about Buddhism. This place is monastery of AngThong Province and free entrance for all visitors you well see different kind of Temple and Goddess of Buddhism. If you like to visits this place From Bangkok Go to Monchit Terminal it's near BTS Monchit. Find the Van going to Wiset Chai Chan the van number 951 and tell to the driver to drop you off to Wat Muang and they will take you there. The Car Van fare around 120Baht but you need to walk down around 500meters after that you will see the Great Buddha of Thailand.

Not well advertised but definitely worth putting on your to see list. The largest Buddha in Thailand is Big especially whenever you stand at the base looking up; you really get a feeling of insignificance. The Thai’s will queue to get on the small platform at the Buddha’s right hand to sprinkle water on the fingernail and touch it, even put gold leaf on it, you feel compelled to do the same. The attraction is not only the Buddha but the many, many other statues telling a Thai story relating to heaven and hell but it certainly would be worth your while bring a Thai interpreter to explain this huge collection of statues. It is quite explicate and maybe not the place for young children but that is your decision. Colourful is an understatement and make sure you have lots of space for pics, you will be clicking your finger to death. There is a small temple or shrine that should not be missed with the embalmed body of a very well thought of monk, the décor is amazing and I would describe it as serine. Snacks and drinks are available along with souvenirs. A very well laid out venue with a nice water feature, some beautiful flowers and trees also. Highly recommended.

When we visited, we went in the morning so it wasn't too crowded. That was nice. There are many individual statue gardens that depict different battles, people following the teachings of Buddha and different depictions of Heaven and Hell. They are very pretty and in some cases entertaining depending on your sense of humor. When we visited, the Golden Buddha was being repaired and was covered in scaffolding and no one could enter the building underneath him. That was a little disappointing but the Buddha is still breathtaking. You can see him towering over the trees as you approach the wat. Around the area there are lots of vendors selling everything from trinkets to food. They do not bargain much.

Is the repainting of the giant Buddha statue completed? Or does anyone know when it will be finished?

TOUR "WAT MUANG" e "AYUTTHAYA"
Salve a tutti, vorrei avere delle info sui trasporti tra Bangkok e Wat Muang e Ayutthaya.
1 - Come arrivare diretti da Bangkok a Wat Muang;
2 - Come arrivare da Wat Muang a Ayutthaya, per poi proseguire per Bangkok dopo la visita a Aytthaya;
3 - Info su tour che comprendono la visita sia di Aytthaya e Wat Muang nella stessa giornata.
Se poi avete altri consigli sono ovviamente ben accetti.
Grazie a tutti
