Ayder is a great little village up the mountain. It is getting developed for tourism but still holds much of the charm of a mountain village. Lots of restraunts and shops. We really thought it was sweet and the people were very nice. Think Breckenridge (US) european ski village. If you keep going up the hill and have car with high clearance, you can go up to other very small villages and half way up, hike along a lovely stream to a beautiful lake. Further up the road you get almost to the top of the mountains and are above the clouds. Well worth a day. There are places to camp all along the way.

This was probably a beautiful scenic little village in the mountains once upon a time but those days are long gone. It is now overcrowded, full of overpriced restaurants and gift shops, the parking and roads are diabolical and there is no sign of any local culture. It is very popular with Arabic tourists so the food , menus etc are in Arabic as well as Turkish. Avoid.

Ayder plateau or highland is a great tourist spot in northern Black Sea region. Simply touch the clouds close to you or even more down. Amazing street start from the top of the area, passing by hundreds of hotels, shops, restaurants and cafes. A great time for relaxation and watch the beauty of the nature.

Both the village of Ayder and the surrounding area are amazingly green and beautiful. The lush, steep, waterfall filled mountains are about a 50-50 mix of pine and deciduous trees. Beautiful mosses and ferns abound.
Be aware that all of this incredible greenery comes with a bit of a price. This general area of Turkey is the only part of the country without a specific dry season. Rain can happen at anytime of the year. While such is generally light from late spring through early fall, days of steady rain are possible.
We had a week in this part of Turkey and came to Ayder first thing. The first two days found relentless rain so we went elsewhere for two days. We then returned to two days of utterly beautiful weather. Try to build in some itinerary adaptability to avoid weather-related disappointment. Also summer weekends find a great many Turkish guests from the general area so consider weekday visits to avoid large crowds.
The sound of rushing water is heard almost everywhere in the village as it is built alongside the thundering Çoruh River. Rafting and kayaking are very popular activities. I believe however that those activities are mainly done in areas well below the village as the river is extraordinarily rugged in and near the town. While the river is fast and high now due to heavy rains and late season snow melt the "gentle" parts of the river are still nearly pure white water. Unfortunately we are only a group of two and could not find at least two more willing to brave the presently frigid water for a rafting adventure.
Hiking is also a very popular activity in the area. There is some SERIOUS hiking above the village.
While not necessary, private transportation is extremely useful if you intend to explore the area for a few days. The area villages are very small and the local minibuses seem to have an infrequent schedule. There are also a multitude of places to stop, take pictures and explore. The highly arched and hundreds of years old stone bridges in the area are especially picturesque.
Ayder is considered a "family" destination. Consequently alcoholic beverages do not seem to be available in the hotels and restaurants. I did however notice alcoholic beverages for sale in at least one market in the village.
Most of the structures in the village are made of (or at least faced with) unpainted wood. The roofs are also unusual for Turkey--they are metal instead of tile and have a gentle slope. I believe this is due to heavy winter snow. Combined with the beautiful green meadows and trees, the effect is particularly charming.
Cows are set free in the morning to meander and graze at will. A couple hours before sunset they return home (on their own) typically using the main street through town. They move out of the way when they are ready ;)
The local cheeses, butter and honey are considered among the best in Turkey. Every meal we have had here has been delicious. Most of the restaurants cook over wood fires.
If low budget is of primary concern when visiting the area, consider staying in one of the other area villages. Ayder is not what I call "expensive" but neither is it "cheap".

It is a paradise among the Kackar mountains. It is about 120Km to Ardesen from Trabzon to East along the Black sea and then 40Km to South passing through Camlihemsin. When we arrived it was raining, so you must be ready. There is very clean and you can see great efforts and rules to protect the nature. Plenty of small Hotels and resturant with attractive views and local and regular eatings makes it joyfull place to stay and relax. havin walks through the greenery is a good choice. We had travelled by our own car, but I think you can find tours from Trabzon.
Our hotel (like many others) was located on the hillside and because making car ways is restricted, people have to walk upside to the hotel, but most of them have some kind of cable elevators to carry the luggage. The weather can be some cold on the night.

It was an amazing place! I never expected something like this to be in Turkey! A hidden gem really!
We rented a car from Trabzon Airport and drove all the way to Ayder. The road was superb and the Journey was amazing! You'll drive by the coast for around and hour or so and then side by side with the river coming down from ayder and surrounding mountains! The scenery is breathtaking. We found ourseleves stopping after every 10 15 minutes to take some pictures or just stop and enjoy the scenery!
You'll also see some very old stone arch bridges on your way and some restaurants and hotels beside the river.
When you reach Ayder, you'll find the people very friendly and welcoming. Its a small village/town with beautiful green pastures and mountain slopes where tour buses often stop and tourists and locals come out to sing and dance. small souvenir shops and several restaurants line the streets.
Its usually cold there so DO pack warm clothes! We went there in first week of May and it was around 2-4 Degree celcius during the day With drizzle :D IT WAS BEAUTIFUL!!!!
Dont miss it!!!

Well worth a trip to stay a night.
Very small town, but friendly.
Don't be put off by the Saudi's that come there during the day to have a picnic on the wonderful green hill side. A bit of a shock to us seeing all the Saudi women dressed in full black burka's.
Eventually I got speaking to them which really helped me understand them more & broke down barriers for me.
Highly recommend a overnight visit here.

A highly populated area just in the begining of the national park.People are friendly and you may find good local dishes but the pricces are a bit higher. There's a popular thermal bath.
The place in the last ten year had to much construction for too many hotels. The new buildings are mostly untraditional concerete ones. So even though the green catches you in every angle the concerete takes you away from the feel of nature.
But anyhow Ayder is an intersection of high plateau roads. (Avusor,Huser,Kavron) So from there you may reach higher plateaus and Kackar Mountains. In higher plateaus you may have a daily hike for glacier lakes and summits.I did have several roots by motorcycle in a day to Avusor and Huser. Make sure to have your swimming suit and rain cover together.

I'd like to stay at one place with a view and then hike. Are there easy hikes?

I am planning to stay in Ayder Yaylasi for two nights. Willing to go to Fitina Deresi, Zil Kale, Kackar Mili Park and Huser Yaylasi. Can anyone tell if its an easy drive from Trabzon to Ayder Yaylasi? Like if I m driving there by myself, what vehicle should I take? Manual or automatic. Are the roads very steep? Also, tell about roads near Firtina Deresi. Please tell me so I will rent car accordingly, Also, I m from Pakistan and we have right hand drive here. Turkey has left hand drive vehicles.

merhaba!
Oraya minibüs alabilir miyim? Ben köylerde yaşayan insanların arabaları olmadığından eminim ki oraya giden minibüsler olmalı.
Can I take a minibus up there? I am sure the people who live in the villaes don't have cars so there must be minibuses that go there.
tesekkurler:)

hi, i am planning to visit ayder by the end of this month . should i expect lush green areas ? i don't like visiting areas with snow too much . i am also visiting uzungol and savsat and i have the same questions about it aswell. kindly guide me regarding the scenery . thank you !!
Written 14 April 2018
Hello! All place that you’re visiting are green areas however they’re surrounded by small traditional shops and restaurants with nice views. The snow is on the top of the mountain so you won’t reach it. Uzungol has more activities that can be done than ayder. You can rent a bike or tuktuk and discover the small village with the beautiful lake. There are playing areas for kids too, and many coffee shops and restaurants around the lake.

Hi im visiting Ayder on 23 September I would like to know if it is easier to reaching ayder from Trabzon by car
Written 16 September 2017
I am sorry to answer so late. If you can, it is good to take a car because although there are busses, it takes many changes to get to Ayder. The usual route for busses is Trabzon to Çamlıhemşin , then take local transportation for there. With a car, though , there are many placed in the Hemşin valley/Fırtına valleys that you can go - Zilkale, the Palovit waterfall (very beautiful), etc. From Ayder you can get a tour up to the Pokut Layla (plateau), and also up into the Kaçkar mountains. you can drive to these places, but only with 4-wheel drive and a very good map. They sell these in Ayder.

I'm curious to know the price of zipline activity in Ayder and if there are organized trecks to Kaçkar mountain and their cost
Thanks in advance.

Hi!
I'm visiting Ayder in first week of May for a couple of days and looking for a day tour around Ayder. Whatever i've found is usually for June-September season. Is May a bad time to go to Ayder in terms of difficulty reaching there or activities?
Also i would like some advice about the road from Rize to Ayder. I'm planning to rent a mid size or compact car from trabzon airport to go to ayder and will return it back at the airport 3 days later. Is the mid size car OK to reach Ayder or is the road such that I should get a 4x4?
Desperately waiting for your good advice!
Thanks!

Hello,
I am planning to visit the Black sea area sometime in April. Between Ayder Yaylasi and Altindere national park (sumela monastry) in Trabzon, which would you recommend for someone with limited time? Which one is more beautiful and worth the visit? Thank you.
