About
Simien Mountains National Park, in northern Ethiopia is a spectacular landscape, where massive erosion over millions of years has created jagged mountain peaks, deep valleys and sharp precipices dropping some 1,500 m. The park is of global significance for biodiversity conservation because it is home to globally threatened species, including the iconic Walia ibex, a wild mountain goat found nowhere else in the world, the Gelada baboon and the Ethiopian wolf.

- Hugo F4 contributionsVary exceptional and friendly tour agency! We did a 3-day 2 nights trekking to Simien mountain with Ethio Backpacker Tours. The whole experience was exceptional and I recommend Gashaw and his company. We initially reached out to Gashaw via email as we had read the good reviews on different sites. He was very quick to respond with a proposed itinerary and we then connected via WhatsApp. When we arrived in Gonder Gashaw came to meet us at our hotel and gave us a free tour of the city. Our baggage had been lost by our airline so Gashaw took us to some shops to buy clothes and organized a restaurant for dinner. Nothing was too much trouble for Gashaw - he went above and beyond to ensure every aspect of our trip was taken care of. - Mds Pkt9 contributionsMaster Chef Nega Setargachew - enjoyable catering and trekking adventure in Simien MountainsI have hade a chance to enjoy twice the outcome of Nega Setargachew's passion - cooking. Both times when hiking in Simien Mountains for four days. He knows very well what the people from Europe or US like. Nega is very experienced chef and he is also listening carefully what are the preferences of the people for whom he is cooking. He will adjust the taste so that it will not be too spicy in case you don't like it etc. I definitely recommend him! On top of that he is also able ta organize the tours in Ethiopia according to the wishes of customers. You can contact him via Whatsapp +251 918043604 or write an e-mail negasetargachew@gmail.com Please check http://www.northexpeditionsethiopia.coVisited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 25 March 2024
- simone s4 contributions4 day trekking in Simien MountainsWe spent 4 days trekking in the beautiful Simien Mountains. Our guide Eshetu (WhatsApp: +251(0)931498008) is a local and knows the Simien mountains like the back of his hand! He speaks fluent English, is very well-read, knows every plant, knows Ethiopian history and culture very well and is a very likeable and sensitive person. He is definitely one of the best guides (if not THE best) for a Simien trek!Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 May 2024
- David LTegucigalpa, Honduras7 contributionsStill beautiful during the rainy season, but get a guide!Absolutely breathtaking scenery. Although if going in July, be prepared to get wet and have your view obstructed by clouds at times. However, when the clouds are away, the green colors are magnificent. Don’t let the current conflict stop you from going. Tourists are not bothered by anyone and are frankly quite welcome by all. It is recommended that you get in contact with a guide before you go as a guide is required for entering the park. The roads require a 4x4 and you need a scout as well. I had a great time with Eshetu. He is calm, knowledgeable about the area, and speaks amazing English. His WhatsApp is +251 93 149 8008.Visited July 2024Travelled soloWritten 24 July 2024

Since decades we travel around so called difficult countries, this year Ethiopia. We do not simply buy a package from an international tour operator, also to have the money earned by locals.
As Individual Travelers the Siemien Mountains are a real challenge due to the pure organisation implemented re. transport and the wide spread greed of the locals one is exposed to as individual traveller. People are generally friendly but when it comes to money or service they cheat where they can. We ended up to pay our driver from Addis who refused to drive up to the Siemien Mountain Lodge to better stay in Gondar with his uncles family on our payroll for 3 days, (SML does not offer a shuttle from Debark but can organise a 150$ return transport to Debark on a normal 22km piste! The lodge itself is disappointing and not worth the price), we spent a couple of hours to find a reasonable low fee (40USD) to make the drive from Debark to Simien Mountain Lodge with a senior guy called Arbera (best regards from Chris) i.o. $120. We paid for a nice but useless Rifleman (Scout) which is obviously part of an employment program and we had a cheating young Guide who lost interest in hiking and made up a fake story that we have to cancel a hiking tour as the Park Gate closes at 18:00 and the road back were so difficult although Tuck Tuck make it (we then passed it at 14:45!). He obviously ordered the driver to drive dead slow and plaid all sort of funny things with us - main objective - Matheo got his fee. Don't take him. The few hikes were very nice and the views and animals (Ghelabas, Birds) spectecular.
The locals are nice too but better take pens and small money with you, I still hear all the voices crying "give me", "Pen", "Birr"

Trekking in the Simien Mountains is one of the top things to do in the whole of East Africa. We were a group of six (three couples), our tour organiser was Gismu - +251 93548 0330 - and our guide for four days was Alex. I would strongly recommend both for your tour. The experience was incredibly well run. The camping equipment was functional and warm, the breakfast and evening meal in particular were delicious and hearty and the whole team of chefs, tent makers, mule men, and scouts couldn't have worked harder over four days to make our trip safe and comfortable yet challenging.

I did a three days trekking in the Simien mountains with friends and I can just recommend it. It has amazing views and landscape! You will be also able to see some animals. It can be cold at night, so be prepared for that!
The trip was organized by Desalgn and all the team was great! I really recommend them! They really contributed for our stay to go so well.

My friend and I went on a 6 days trek accross the Simiens mountains.
We asked Dave Yohannes to organize the trip. He did it perfectly ! First, he's very reactive (send him a whatsapp message or an email). He also listen to the way you want to trek We asked for a sporty trip and we weren't disapointed, especially the last two days with the ascent of the Ras Dejen, top of Ethiopia, and the Ras Buyit, 2d highest top :)
Dave assembled the best team of professionnal to go with us troughout the trek. Everything was perfect : we had friendly horsemans, talentuous cooks (i would say the best i've ever had !) a smart and attentive guide. The staff use good gears and they are very helpfull and caring.
I felt like i was with my family.
Of course Simiens Mountains landscapes are wonderful : it's extraordinary to wake up and see an Ethiopian wolf crossing the camp ! And when you go for a short run at the end of the day, and you meet more than one hundred Geladas Baboons, sit and look at us till the sun set. I was fascinated.
I can only recommend Dave and his staff if you want to travel in the best conditions ! He's very accomodant (he picked us up at our hotel, gave us advices), professionnel, reassuring and friendly.

I joined a 3 days trekk in Simiem Mountains organized by Mohammed in February. I had a wonderful time there . Evrything was very well organized.
Our guide Worku was great, food was very good I even had special meals as a vegan. The landscapes and the wildlife are unbelievable, if you are not sure yet to do it I highly recommend it you won't regret it at all. It is a must do !
I would like to thank all the people who did everything to make our journey unbelievable, the guide, the scouts, the cooks and the persons who are building up the camp in order for us to feel good back at the camp after these big walks 🙏👌! I also want to thanks Mohammed to have organized everything for me and to have checked if everything was going good all the way and also thanks to him and his friend for their hospitality and their help back in Gonder🙌👌.
If you are a bit sensitive to the cold maybe bring an extra sleeping bag . You will have spleeping bag and blanket supplied but because of the altitude nights can be quite cold 😀.

We had an amazing experience in the Simien Mountains booked through Gismu, who is based in Gondar. We did four days and everything was well catered for, our guide Alex was brilliant and incredibly friendly and genuine, while the chef made us delicious food with more fresh vegetables than we have had anywhere in Ethiopia. Warm sleeping bags and blankets were provided for the cold night and plenty of hot drinks around the bonfire in the evening. Would highly recommend using Gismu as an operator who can be contacted on gismudebark@yahoo.com and +251935480330

I did a 4-day hike in the Simien Mountains independently - was planning to join an organised group but that didn't work out. The views were good but it was not pleasant walking on the roads and breathing in dust from the traffic. The only day I thought was worth hiking and really spectacular was from Gich to Chenek.
However, my encounter with the staff at the National Park office left my whole experience a lot to be desired. They initially did not want to proceed with my permit when they found out that I did not have transportation arranged. When I asked about the transportation, I was quoted 2000 Bir just to get in (contrast this to the quote of 1500 Bir to get a private transfer from Axum to Gondar). Next, they wanted to charge me for an extra day because I have to 'walk back' from Chenek to Debark. This is probably the only national park in the world that would dictate the number of days I have to spend in the park. I got away with not arranging transportation (the moment I walked out of the office, someone offered me a tuktuk at a much more reasonable price) but paid for the extra day. Also managed to get a lift out of Chenek for a high but still reasonable cost.
The only saving grace was the scout I had who despite not being able to speak English, was extremely friendly, professional and great at spotting wildlife. As an avid hiker and have hiked in a few other African countries, I personally think there are far better and managed hiking spots in Africa (if you are looking to hike in the continent) and Simien Mountains is a 'good to see' only if you happen to be in Ethiopia.

Amazing Country's ~ Incredible Cultures, Nature and so friendly people's all due to Ethio Simien Eco Tours
With Ethio Simien Eco Tour's, we had the most wonderful exiting 19 day's of our lives.
From the first email Wondim the owner came back to me in no time, was supremely helpful and worked out an itinerary that matched all our expectations. Our driver and Guide, was an excellent driver and a bird lover! Our trip coincided exactly with the Ethiopian New year and we were so fortunate to see the locals dressed up in their traditional festival clothes, see the countryside bursting with beautiful flowers after the rainy season and be humbled by the historical rock churches etc. Thank you Mr Wondim and your excellent team for a unforgetable trip through Ethiopia.
Thanks again
Ethiopia is one of the Bucket list country in the entire world with incredible culture which is fascinating tribal groups of people, nature with spectacular climate and scinary as well as the impressed historical site which was built in the 4th century.
Regards to your booking with us I and my all Crew would like give you excellent travel rate service and accommodation with reasonable price as well.

Having arrived in Gondar in the midst of a religious ceremony, we discovered there was no accommodation available as all the hotels were fully booked. However, through word-of-mouth, we were introduced to Addis who came to our rescue! He immediately found us clean and comfortable accommodation right in the centre of town. He then very kindly provided us with a tour of the area which ended in a lovely coffee shop.
He is polite, professional and a pleasure to be around without any pressure and I would highly recommend booking with Addis Simien Mountain Trekking and Tours

We did the 3 day trek in the Simiens. The trip was well organized, food was good. Definitely not the luxury tour, but it had everything you needed at a reasonable price. The treks were fantastic and our guide Wurko was really good - scouting out Ethiopian wolves, ibex and herds of the gelada monkeys. It is really cold at night - bring warm layers. Also, the camps we stayed at all had road access, so you are able to bring your full pack and access you items after the day of trekking. I booked through Adis and everything went smoothly. adisgondar@gmail.com and WhatsApp+251962520160

Hi everybody! We are planing to do the full trek in the Simien Mountains (from Debark to Adi Arkay, through Ras Dejen) in October. We are not going on an organized group and unfortunately it seems to be quite difficult to get information on the days after Chennek, so we were hoping to get more information here.
Meals: Where can we buy meals on the way? Are there lodges after Chenek where we can get diner and breakfast? Are there villages on the way where we can buy basic supplies or food?
Water: We have a purification system, but is there running water in October along the trail? Besides Ambiko and Arkwasiye - is there water in all campsites?
Any information would be helpful!!

Hi! We will be visiting this area next year in January but will be staying in Gondar and will only have one day to drive to the park, do a hike and drive back to Gondar for overnight. Can you tell me if it is worth a visit for only one day? What can we see during this short time? I am trying to decide on doing this or we will have time to visit Awash National Park and spend one night there but we cannot do both. Having a hard time deciding which to do as I cannot find much information on what we will be able to see in a partial day visit to Simien National Park. Any information is greatly appreciated!

I'm planning a trip to the Simien Mountains for the end of Jan. i notice you were just there in early Jan. I was wondering whether the scenery was still green with flowers or whether it has started to turn brown since it is now the dry season.
Written 7 January 2019
I was there last week- not green at all. Very dusty and brown! There are some nice red flowers (apparently weeds) everywhere. I was on a tour with Intrepid and they organised our camping etc. It was all really well done.
