Wow!!! I know how to cook but wanted to experience the culture. I actually got to make several dishes with Ava's wonderful guidance and learned those special ingredients/technique for local favorite dishes. Then the experience of chatting her and all that she manages - it's like a mini farm. I may have missed a few birds in Crooked Tree but I met a wonderful grm of a lady in Beluze. I felt I really got more than cooking but a cultural education. The dish shown was a lovely cheese dip.

Not being super birders we decided to take a cooking class while we were at Crooked Tree. It was so much more than a class. We got to tour Mrs. Ava's farm. She and her husband raise turkeys, chickens, ducks, pigs as well as a garden. We cooked and chatted about our families. We had chosen a menu when we signed up for class. We made a bread pudding, cheese dip, curry chicken, vegetable rice, fried plantains and salad. We also tried some of Mrs. Ava's homemade cashew wine. Thank you Mrs. Ava for welcoming us to your home,

Great experience. We came by cruise ship and upon my request for transportation, they arranged pick up from the pier - we arrived on New Years Day and the city shuts down on this holiday so the prices we were getting for transportation to the class were ridiculous. The pre arranged price with Ava's was reasonable. The ride was great and informative and flew by. The class is in Ava's home with open doors and windows and thankfully they had a fan blowing to keep us cool. The class was great! We made the Fish and Fufu dish as well as the chips and dips and coconut pie. Ava was very organized and had everything ready for us. She allowed us to do as much of the preparing as we wanted and guided us along. As some parts of it were cooking, we were given a tour of her property - pigs, chickens, calf, vegetables..... It is quite remarkable the amount they have to maintain for their vegetables and animals. After we cooked the family joined us for lunch - we made a large amount of food - which added to the cultural experience we had. I would do this again in the future.

I had the experience of cooking class before in Thailand, and I loved it. So when I knew that there is a cooking class in Belize, I was thrilled! I was desired to learn Belizean foods all the time. The experience was great, and the teacher was a lovely lady who cooked in her little kitchen. Although the space wasn't huge, but it made you feel sweet and warm. And the teacher also prepared the recipe for us, so that we can still cook when we are at home. It's worthy to visit! :)

Excellent the Belizean meal and cooking class!
Before you join the tour, you could choose one from appetizers, main courses, and desserts.
Mrs. Ava would prepare the materials which you choose from the menu.
She kindly explained and showed each material and let you operate by yourself.
We enjoyed and relaxed the cooking together.
After the cooking, you could taste the food, it was so nice!

Ms. Ava, the chef was not only skillful but also open-minded and kind. I enjoyed cooking and having lunch in the welcoming village house surrounded by abundant nature including her homegrown vegetables and lovely livestock there.

I will visit Belize in April 2017, and really would love take this class. What is the cost? I am staying in Belize City, should I rent a car or is public transportation available?

Car hiring is the easiest way!
But you can take the direct buses from Belize City to Crooked Tree village at the Save U bus stop; 10:55, 16:55 or 17:25.
Also there are package tours including transportation, birding tour and cooking class. You can check the info by searching like "visitcrookedtree package tours".
Just make sure that the cooking class needs booking in 2 days advance!
