As we looked out from our balcony we could see the Olden Old Church in the distance with its superb spire and thought we would look at finding this building. We walked for quite sometime and eventually arrived at this quite unique church which was very impressive to see inside and out. Within the church has an absolute abundance of fantastic wooden bench seats, altar, and impressive roof structure. The entire church is so well made and looks so traditional for this area. We spent approx. 15 minutes inside walking around and taking pictures of the simply enormous musical organ which is at the back of the church on the upper level. The walk here is easy and straightforward and its certainly worth a view. The scenery around the church is spectacular with the mountains tipped in snow and water cascading down to flow into the river which ends up in the Fjord. When the Queen Mary 2 left Olden some of the locals came out and waved Norwegian & UK flags. They also played music from 4 very large speakers e.g. "We are Sailing" by Rod Stewart, which was a really lovely gesture. It obviously impressed and pleased many passengers as a lot waved back from there balconies/deck areas and applauded as the ship departed. We saw residents on hill side houses standing in there gardens waving very large Norwegian Flags as well which again was very much appreciated. Certainly worth visiting Olden, thank you.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 June 2024
- BigJeff L1,496 contributionsUnique Norwegian ChurchThe church is the only existing cruciform church in Nordfjord. It is no longer used as a parish church but does ocasionally get used for pecial occasions. The church seats about 250 people in hand made woodern pews. The altar is impressive and was fully restored a few years back. Look out for the 16th Century Bible on display! I enjoyed a wonder around the graves in the churchyard looking particularly at the old metal gothic designed ones.Visited July 2024Travelled soloWritten 9 July 2024

Inside the old church was beautiful, all wood and the roof looks like the hull of a boat. Weird thing is, that the inside of the church was considerably colder then it was outside.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 29 August 2024

This simple but elegant church is made completely of wood! It cannot be as old as it is supposed to be considering the conditions of the wood but I am sure a church has been here for a long time. Set at the head of the fjord and with snowy peaks behind, the church is really breathtaking. And, the churchyard is quite peaceful.

A historic church around this area, from outside it’s such a pretty ‘chocolate box’ look about it. Inside is lovely with a beautiful alter. Some lovely old memorabilia around, in particular a photo of all the townsmen dressed as Trolls. This is a stunning church worth a visit if your in the area.

Unless the weather is inclement you can turn this visit into a nice walk/hike which is not demanding. Head out from town along the road to the Red Church. As you are making the trek you will see some grass covered buildings on your left. On your right after passing a bridge there will be a river to your right. You will see a trail here going down to the river. Also, on the left there is a green house with a studio to visit.
Once at the church inspect the grounds, enjoy the views all around you, and step inside to take in the wooden decor. After consuming this you can continue down the road through the valley to the water and hills or return to the town. With either option when you do return to town when you come to the bridge on the left by the river take the path down, then cross the Elves bridge, follow the trail farther cross another bridge, continue or turn back. This is all easy to do. (Make sure you see the Old WHITE Church - 1759 in the village too)
The local people told us about a trail that was on the opposite side of the river after leaving the stores/town that slowing rose up into the hills overlooking the town. We followed this for an hour then headed back to where we saw a road angling down through three grass roofed homes and zig zagged back to the city below. (moderate)
See if you can get a map.... might be able to see/understand it better. Or go on line ahead and do a google earth.

As you leave the Harbour/towne area you will see a Old White Church in the Middle of the residential area . This building dates back to 1750's and served about 250 parishioners. One can easily visualize both from the exterior and interior an era and lifestyle left to history. No outstanding frescos or dominating stained glass but a humble place to Witness and Worship as a community.
Inside you will witness a sign that addresses the people of this area "Gud Signe Fedrelandet" - God Bless Your Country. Take note of the hat and coat rack that greet you as you enter each pew and the carvings on the pews themselves.

If you land in Olden via cruise ship there are a limited number of options if you are not taking one of the frighteningly expensive excursions.
Whatever the weather the Old Church (not very old really but the original one was) is worth walking over to. Time your visit for when others aren't there. If you arrive when there's a coach party take a stroll around the back and along the road towards the new church so you can experience the old church in silence (and take better photographs).
The construction, with wooden 'nails', is wonderful and the dress style of the congregation (historical picture) is very interesting.
On your way out take a close look at the gravestones. The designs are unique and one or two have little bird figurines.

We opted for a diesel train tour of Olden at a fraction of the prices the ship was prepared to charge. We took a noddy style train complete with narration and had a great tour lasting about 75 minutes....and after the tour we were dropped off a fair distance from the port and returned on foot.....and had a little look around the area...as well as a look at this beautiful church.

Thanks.

It is entirely dependent upon the weather. Good walking shoes or boots, warm jacket and trousers should suffice.
