It was a very peaceful and serene place. The care taker was very helpful and pleasant. We were told to sign on visitor log book and surprise to know that we were the only 2nd Singaporean to visit that museum.
The whole place was filled with olden days history when farmers and traders used to sell and buy items on that area. You can see tools and types of 'machine' they used harvest crops. The staircase can be steep and narrow, but every level show the living quarter from the past.

The Ogyen Choling Heritage House and Museum are located in the beautiful Tang Valley, about a 1-hour drive from Jakar, Bumthang in Central Bhutan. While the Heritage House has excellent guest accommodation, we were staying in Jakar but enjoyed a wonderful lunch overlooking the gardens of the house.
Our main highlight was the Ogyen Choling Museum, established by the descendants of the ancient and religiously significant Ogyen Choling nagtshang. This building was reconstructed after the 1897 earthquake and is regarded as the most realistic representation of the living conditions of the Bhutanese religious nobility in the 1800's and early 1900's.
Having been to all the great museums of the world, I have become allergic to museums of all kinds, but this place has a special magic and authenticity not found in any other place. The exhibits, artwork, living quarters and granaries combine to deliver a true-life experience and it was hard to leave it behind, although the memories remain forever.
Our guide was a well-educated and historically knowledgeable young man named Phuntso Tenzin, himself a family member and an artist. This was a great experience as was the walk around the village after lunch.

Oygen Choling Palace Museum in our opinion is one of the tourist highlights in visiting Bhutan. The palace had remained in the same family for generations and the family who do the guiding around the exhibits are very knowledgeable about its history. It truly gives an insight into life in Bhutan over the centuries. We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Oygen Choling Palace Museum and was one of the highlights of our trip.

No trip to Bhutan can be considered complete without a visit to Ogyen Choling Museum. This is the only private museum in Bhutan. Kunzang Choden (20th generation in the family that has lived here) does an excellent narration of the history of the place and her ancestors. The museum has been maintained very well and portrays the life and style of the people that lived there. Apparel and implements have been displayed well. The museum also houses ancient writings which are priceless.
Kunzang Choden is also an accomplished and established writer - the first lady from Bhutan to have published a book in English.

The museum is about a 30 minute drive from the main road in the little valley town. After crossing the river the road is very, very rough. If you do not have a bad back and can deal with the bumps, the museum is definitely worth it. This was the property of a major landlord who once had many surfs. The property has been in the same family for 21 generations and the artefacts relate directly to this place. The staircases are original and very steep. We found it well worthwhile to take the guide whose commentary was clear and succinct.

This museum is remotely located on the hill top of Tang valley, requiring more than 1.5 hours drive from Chamkhar town. Be aware that the latter part of the drive is through rough, uneven and unpaved tracks.
The current curator, Kunzang Choden, is a descendant of the original family, being the 20th generation. She will give an hour personal tour to walk through the various rooms in this 4-storey museum.
The artefacts depicting the way of life are recreated in the original rooms of the central tower. Granaries, agricultural implements, kitchen, room for making alcohol, caravan and trade room, textiles, bamboo and ratan rooms, religious dances costumes and masks room, library and printing-room are displayed, with English explanations too.
Good to drop by to appreciate Bhutanese past way of life.

I personally love Tang valley because it offers a variety of attractions: hikes to temples, nature, local hospitality, farmhouses and village life and last but not least a visit to Ogyen Choling Palace, beautifully located on a hilltop. For those with stamina I would suggest to walk to Ogyen Choling starting from Misethang school to really get a feel for the locality. The owners of the palace are very welcoming and you can even stay at the palace in the attached guest house! The museum is really my favorite in Bhutan because it covers such a wide range of cultural aspects from the perspective of historical nobility. It is perfect for a day trip and you can have lunch at the Palace. However, it is worthwhile staying there for a night or two. Ogyen Choling is an attraction I would not want to miss when visiting Bumthang.

The trip through the Tang Valley is interesting albeit a rugged ride. Our purpose was to meet the owner of Ogyen Choling Palace, Kunzang Choden, a Bhutanese author of Circle of Karma and Dawg among others. Kunzang is the first Bhutanese woman to publish in English. After touring the museum, which is worth the trip on its own, we were served lunch in the cafe and had a wonderful encounter with Kunzang. She is a gentle but powerful woman and a joy to spend time with. This was one of the highlights of a magnificent trip!

This little family museum and its guide told me more about the country than my guide managed in 25 days.

Great that this museum exists! We got the private tour from the 21st generation of the family! It was amazing!
