Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Really enjoyed the climb. The new path that has been put in across the bog at the start and also most of the way up to the top makes it a much better experience than before.
You still get the thrill at the top of the wonderful view and also the "one man's path" as the highlight.
We are relatively fit and took us about 2 hours to get up and down with plenty of breaks to take in the views

I absolutely loved this hike but I found difficult at times.
Hiking boots are a 100% must, doing the hike in runners is madness. A clear day with little wind is also beneficial as it’s so high at the top wouldn’t have wanted any winds.
At the start of the mountain it’s all boggy/swampy ground so it’s full or thick mud & water.
Then it changes into small stones which can be sloppy, I was on all 4’s at certain parts of this climb. There are a few peaks at the top, we went to the second peak which was far enough for us as it got dangerous. We did it early in the morning & started at 8.30 where little people were climbing which was lovely. It took us a 2 hour return trip but generally for other people it takes longer. I found coming down easy.
The hike is worth it for the amazing views at the top, I absolutely loved the hike & would definitely do it again.

We did this with our 8 yr old. Trail is easy to follow but quite mucky so boots are highly recommended. Otherwise it’s a good and relatively strenuous walk. We went on a windy day and had to turn back as was quite exposed on the side so calm days are much better.
There is a small car park at the base but when we visited this was full and most people parked along the road which was fine as visibility was good with clear ditches.
Views are spectacular so it’s well worth the effort.

I have been staying in the Mount Errigal on Business during April and May 2024.
What a wonderful Hotel, all the staff are very friendly and helpful.
However, I must mention one particular member of staff that currently works in the Bar Restaurant, her name is Orla.
Every time she serves me she gives a Masterclass on how customer service should be delivered!!
She is extremely polite, confident, friendly and so professional at all times; she is a credit to the hotel.
I will be staying at the Mont Errigal for the next couple of months and Orla makes my stay very special and enjoyable.
Well done Orla!!

We attended to celebrate a family birthday for meal and drinks. Menu options were great and suited all young and old, any requests were happily accommodated. Food was lovely staff were great but Bug Shout out for the gorgeous Louise who took our booking, helped sort balloons and cake and made sure that we were very well looked after. Will definitely return thank you x

Climbed Errigal yesterday with my husband and two boys aged 13 and 11. We all loved it. While the climb itself is tough enough with boggy ground to begin with followed by loose stoney steep ground for the bulk of the climb, if you have the right waterproof hiking footwear and are reasonably fit, it is very doable. It took us just two hours to get to the top, having stopped for a bit of lunch on the way up and to admire views. There”s not much room at the top so we didn’t linger there. It took about 1.5 hours to come back down the mountain. The loose stones makes the descent tricky. But we had a lovely sunny day and it was great. Again, the right footwear makes all the difference for the descent. Saw plenty of people wearing runners and having difficulties.

Hard climb. Be prepared. Stoney path up and can loose your footing. Concentrate at all times. Mosh marsh at the bottom of the mount before you climb. Wear appropriate footwear! And take water and snacks. 3 hours up and down total. Good climb and really enjoyed it. Stunning views from the top. Found a cross and a few RIP stones. Really Lovely.

2 things to make life easier for you are waterproof hiking boots and walking poles. This was an easy enough climb and took 3 hours up and down. Spectacular views all tge way up and at the top. Highly recommended, especially if weather is clear.

I've been wanting to climb Errigle for a few years now but only recently took the plunge. I've climbed a good few mountains before (Croagh Patrick, Cuilcagh Legnabrocky trail etc) so I had a fair idea what to expect and after reading reviews on here about the mud I packed a spare pair of shoes, socks and a towel just incase (in hindsight the best decision of the day!). We got a beautiful day for it and as a result the tiny car park was full, meaning we joined the many other cars lining the road. It took about an hour, slightly more to get to from strabane and it was easily found. Leaving the carpark I was slightly confused to find no path whatsoever, there was people walking in all directions through the mountain land, some went left from the car park, some went right...we went right. Much to my dismay the reviews on here that mentioned the mud had not been exaggerated. We were unable to walk more than a few steps before we came to areas of mud, wet bog, marshland that literally stopped us in our tracks. We powered on for half an hour, eventually crossing the stream to the left side hoping it would be better land but it was the same, if not worse. How can the tourism board stand by and let this land be destroyed by the thousands of people trampling over it every year? Now I was wearing good solid walking trainers and my sister hiking boots and both of our feet were so soaked and caked in boggy mud up to our ankles that we had to wring out our socks!! All this before we even reached the mountain path!! Both of us agreed that we couldn't continue on for a possible few hours in soaked feet and we turned, having to complete the same obstacle coarse back to the car! I've never been so disappointed in a tourist attraction like this before, surely it wouldn't be that difficult to put a stone/gravel/wooden path in place up to the foot of the mountain instead of destroying the land? And the two days before we went had been good weather too so I can only imagine the mess it must be in bad weather! Listen to the reviews that say to wear Wellingtons until you reach the mountain path, it's the only way to keep your feet dry and clean. I will return and climb this mountain one day but I'll be bringing the wellies and spare shoes and socks for sure.

Is there entertainment in the Mount Errigal Hotel during the week?

Is there a Fee to climb the Mountain?
Written 21 January 2020
No Fee at all and the car park is also free. The best part about Donegal is that most attractions are free.

I’m wondering if Mount Errigal would be a similar climb as Croagh Patrick? Planning a trip next year and my children 14, 12 and 10 have climbed Croagh Patrick in 3 occasions. Errigal looks amazing.
Written 25 November 2019
Mount Errigle is similar but not in size as it would only take a moderatly fit person one and a half to two hours to climb up the mountain weather permitting.
Croagh Patrick is less boggy and has more loose stones underfoot which makes for dangerous climbing on the steep bits.
Errigle is only stoney near the pinnacle otherwise boggy with large boulders or stones to travel over.
Errigle has another advantage in that it is lower and less likely to cloud over except at the very top. Croagh Patrick is more dangerous and should be avoided on very windy days.
The views from both mountains are one thing they have in common as in on a good day fabulous!
Good luck with either mountain.

there is no bus station nearby. car hire is essential if you want to visit Donegal and Mount Errigal.

Is there a place nearby Mt Errigal where you can hire out tramping/hiking sticks for the day rather than buy them for a one-off?
Written 10 January 2019
I know there is a place called wet n wild where they do everything outdoors, they might be able to help you out.

For someone who is not a mountaineer but a steady walker of 60, and never ascended to such heights, what is the best point i.e. easiest, point of departure for the climb and then closest area of accommodation? (presumably a car park?)
Traveling in mid April next year, 2019.
Thank you.

You will see a car park as you drive around the bottom. Can be fairly boggy and wet. We tied bags over our boots. Done the job. Just follow the path you be grand. Its an easy hike up. Enjoy. Just google b&bs. Etc. We hired house on airbnb. Worth a check

Can someone give clear directions from the carpark to the summit?
I've read many reviews, some claiming people were trying to summit by various routes and going in all directions, some wading through bog, others having to abort because of the relentless mud and bog. Many suggest there is no obvious trail/path.
A clear description of a route from the carpark would be appreciated.

I left from the carpark coming in from the Letterkenny side, this was on a summers evening it did not take long to reach the top I had someone with me who had been up before at the base it vague but when past it there is a definite trail to the top to follow...

Are you allowed to take dogs? Thanks in advance
Written 13 July 2017
Yes, I'd agree with the above two answers. The boggy start and the loose scree and stones on the climb itself would probably make it impractical and possibly unsafe to bring a dog along unless it was well trained and used to such terrain. Plus you would have to consider the safety of other people on the climb. Having climbed it about a month ago I would'nt say its the most ideal place to bring your dog.
