Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Located in a former famine era workhouse, this museum has lots of memorabilia from locals. It helps to explain the complex history of the area. No charge for admission. Grotto on the grounds and a memorial for a mass grave. Worth a look, located walking distance from center city hotels.

I've been visiting this area for 40 years and didn't even know it existed. The receptionist was extremely interesting and knew a great deal about WW1 Donegal service men and women. There are other dispays about the famine, workhouse, people leaving for America. Go and visit - it's absolutely free.

I went into the Museum to get out of the rain one day recently and they had a massive World War 1 exhibition on. It was interesting to see what tools were used and uniforms were worn etc. I am a History buff anyway but it was done in such a way as to be easily understood even by schoolchildren who happened to call in while I was there.
The only fault with the Museum is the size of the building is small but they do pack in a lot into that space and upstairs they have some of the permanent exhibitions of local interest. This building was originally a "work house", then a local Hosptial and how they did all that in this space beats me.There are artifacts going back to Charles the first coins etc upstairs and lots of exhibits from the famine and early centuries.
The staff are friendly and helpful and very patient with some of the younger visitors as you would expect from professional people.
Car parking is not great and the only blessing is the Orchard Inn opposite has a large car park and they do a very nice lunch if you needed on your visit to the Museum.
Now if the Government ever get money again this place could do with an extension to house more interesting exhibits.

This would have been a much better experience if the displays had been in chronological order. They sort of jumped around over the years and were sometimes hard to follow if one wasn't familiar with Irish history. The staff were very friendly and helpful though although one receptionist didn't seem to like us looking at a video on the "troubles" and suggested we view something else ,then went ahead and logged us out of the video we were watching on the IRA/UVF. Perhaps she felt it reflected badly on the Irish.? Otherwise worth a visit to this museum.

This museum is in the town of Letterkenny in Co Donegal, and its in a fine old stone building, which was once part of the Letterkenny Workhouse, opened in 1845. It houses all aspects of Donegal life from the Stone Age, to the 20th Century. On the ground floor, they house a series of temporary exhibitions throughout the year. They also house the North West Film archive, and it's available for viewing, on site. The museum is free, so you have no excuse not to visit.

When you visit an area for the first time you naturally want to investigate the history and this museum is an excellent example of what is needed. Advised by the lady st reception we spent much longer that anticipated because of the wealth of information. The place was very quiet, hopefully due to time of the year, so we got extra value with an interesting conversation with the same lady. A valued extra was a special and very informative history of Jacob’s Biscuits.

Wonderful friendly & helpful staff. Exhibitions beautifully displayed. Loads of literature on what is happening in the town & throughout the county. A combination of history, art, heritage and tourism that is suitable for everyone.....and yes, suitable for children as the Museum provides space for drawing & painting & to exhibit their talents!

We visited this small museum, housed in the former Workhouse, while waiting for our transfer to the airport. It exceeded or expectations, being well laid out with interesting displays. We especially enjoyed the 6th and 7th Century pillar stones and the excellent film archive.
Such a shame that budget cuts have reduced its ability to put on temporary exhibitions.

You can enjoy the wonders of the Museum with the assistance of staff most days. It has obtained a large amount of wonderful historical artefacts and puts on writing and painting exhibitions. Worth looking at.

The museum is rather small and in 30-45 minutes one can see all there is to see. I think the collection is rather small and unsatisfying. However as there is no entrance fee its an ok place to visit on a rainy day to kill a bit of time.

Hello I’m visiting Letterkenny in September from New Zealand at the beginning of our stay in Co Donegal. I have information from Griffiths Valuation records from mid 19th century of my great grandmother’s family being at Crossroads Ballyconnell area. We are heading to stay in Falcarragh after Letterkenny and I would like to know of any records/resources you may know about which relate to this area in 1840-1877. My great grandmother left area in 1876 to come to New Zealand. Her name was Catherine McClafferty daughter of John MCClafferty and Mary (McFadden). Her father was a blacksmith. Would you be able to give me suggestions as to where any info can be obtained. Thank you Liz Mark, Auckland , New Zealand
