- Shelley W33 contributionsGreat spot for a pint in Ireland's oldest pubSean's Bar has a lively, friendly vibe in a rustic environment that's full of charm. Sean himself poured our pints and we got a cozy booth table to enjoy them. There's lots to look at on the walls for anyone interested in history, and some cool merch to bring home (even if your name isn't Sean).Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 September 2023
- TannisRobLadner, Canada775 contributionsAbsolutely a highlight of our trip! We've had this on our bucket list for ages and finally made it from Canada. It was just as expected. A loud, noisy fun bar, with a lovely wood fire aroma in the air, sawdust on the floor, and drinks flowing. Impossible not to have a good time here.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 April 2024
- luv2travelJohns Creek, Georgia22 contributionsThree Cheers for Sean's BarHaving Irish coffee or Irish whiskey in the oldest pub in Ireland was a very memorable experience. Our large group of 44 travelers from the state of Georgia were treated to a wonderful history of the pub by the manager. We also learned that Netflix is creating a documentary about Irish pubs that will include Sean's Bar. Be sure to include a visit to this historic place if you are in Ireland.Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 23 April 2024
- tony cEuless, Texas320 contributionsOLD BARThe oldest bar in the world!! What a fun place to visit. We never knew this and our tour guide wanted us to see it even though it was not on our tour. We just stopped in to take some pictures but the food did look good and they had such a friendly staff. A must see if you are anywhere near Athlone, Ireland!!Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 May 2024
- Mary Beth CCharleston, South Carolina106 contributionsSean's Barthis is truly a traditional Irish bar. The people are friendly and it is quite lively. I would recommend people come to see this place. It’s supposedly is one of the oldest bars and Ireland back to the 900. We really didn’t care about that, but we did appreciate the kindness, openness, and the friendliness of everyone I would highly recommend coming. Here is staying in the town. I wish we knew about this sooner. We were just passing by.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 May 2024
- Sharon MWindham, New Hampshire652 contributionsFun Bar and Loved the Ambiance! The appeal is that it is the "oldest" pub in Ireland. Located in Athlone and lived up to the hype of some place we were told we must pop into for a drink. It is a drinking pub so don't plan on eating anything here. The outside is deceiving as there is quite a bit of room inside, different sitting areas. They have reserved a spot in the front for musicians but we were early in the day so did not have the experience of being there when anyone was playing. I bet it's a lot of fun in the evenings and on weekends.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 June 2024
- Erin MNew Jersey21 contributionsSean's Bar - the oldest in IrelandVisit the oldest bar in Ireland (and the world!) in Athlone! We stopped in while spending the day hanging out in Athlone. It gets filled quickly and often with tour groups, but the staff is attentive and gets you your pint quickly (as quickly as one can pour a Guinness!). Great atmosphere and great craic - a must-see! Tip: go later in the day to avoid the tour groups.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 July 2024
- MikeMUSASouthampton, New Jersey167 contributionsMust visit in AthloneA touch of history and a great selection of draft beer. If in Athlone, you pretty much HAVE to stop at Sean's. It claims to be the oldest pub in the world. Much bigger than I expected. Great selection of beer and a charming atmosphere. Quick stop for a pint.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 July 2024

It is supposed to be the oldest bar in the world!! 900AD. Right across the street from a castle. We all ordered an Irish Coffee made with thick cream. Yum!! Undeniably a nice setting, but soured by treatment there. Was in with 4 friends (guys in 30s) for a pint, relatively early in the day, before leaving Athlone after a weekend there.
Half-way through our pint, the barman saw a tour bus pull up outside and asked us to move to the outside area in the back, to leave the most scenic part of the pub empty for people on the tour to enjoy (as he put it). We obliged, as he asked politely, but it was rather strange.
Without our knowledge, some other friends who were in a different part of the town tried to enter soon after, and he refused them entry, saying no large groups, stags or hens allowed, etc. He then came out to the back to say the same to us. We finished our drink and left, walking back through the pub which had a large group of about 50 people from the tour-bus inside. Double standards.

Tried to vist this bar on a Friday night after having dinner with two friends. We are all male and in our 30's. The bouncer asked us how many of us there were. We explained it was just the three of us. He then accused us of being part of a bigger group and refused to let us in.
We were passing the bar again a couple of hours later and tried again. Same result with different bouncer. He had gotten word through his ear piece not to let us in. He then told us we were part of a bigger group. We asked if the group were still there and he siad they left a while back. If the 'group' we were part of had already left, then why would we want to go in without them...? Nonsense!
In summary, if you are male and in the age range of someone that could possibly be on a stag, you proably won't get in.

The place is warm and welcoming and the guests as well as staff at the bar is equally great. We spent 3 hours there drinking a lot of excellent beer and non alcoholic alternatives and as we had our 10 year old son with us we wanted to respect the rule of no kids after 8, we left 7.50. After a few minutes our son said he wanted to go to the bathroom so we turned around after approx 75 meters. At the door we explained to the doorman the situation that we just left but our son just needed to go to the bathroom. It was 19.55. He refused. When I then because of the urgency went away with my son to find a alternative, more understanding place, the doorman explained to my wife after figuring out that we was here as tourists that it was a "very dangerous place" and she should be careful.
If the restaurant want to survive on locals I assume it is OK to have this type of bouncers at the door.
Except for the absolute cone head at the door, the experience at the bar was pure joy.

We arrived to be told no one could get in as there was a problem with the toilets but we could wait for a table out front which we did . Service was very slow but young lad was nice and pleasant . We noticed others been stopped going in but some people did get in ! They seem to know the barman he would come to the door and let people . We were able to use the toilets upstairs and when we went in there was lots of free tables so asked why we had to sit outside in the street the bouncer told us to talk to the bar staff and the staff said it’s up to the bouncer . We asked to speak to the manager. Who was off on the Saturday night, so we’re were allowed order drink and food (food was good )use the toilets the exact same as the people inside but not allowed in to sit at the empty tables . What a joke . One of the bouncers was spoke to needs to come down from what ever power trip he is on and get some manners . We left in the end we were looking forward to visiting the oldest pub in Ireland 🇮🇪 on our trip to Athlone, very disappointed . I understand they had a issue with the toilets but have the same rule for everyone

Hi
Very sorry to read your review. We do pride ourselves on our customer service and work very hard to make sure that everyone's visit to Sean's bar is a memorable one. We did experience a flash flood last week due to the inclement weather which led to some problems. We did have to reduce our capacity momentarily whilst we were solving the problem as we didn't want to cause further problems and wanted to make sure everyone in the place was looked after.
We dont do food ourselves so I imagine the food you enjoyed was takeaway from next door - possibly Handsome Burger or My Melody restaurant
I would like if you could reach out to me at info@seansbar.ie to discuss further
Many thanks for your review and apologies again
Kind regards
Declan

Having heard all about the oldest bar in Ireland I decided that I would give it a visit. With the gorgeous river view and the beautiful cobblestone roads, I have to say at first glance I was quite impressed with this dainty town setting, but that’s about it! Upon arrival to the door I was met by a bouncer asking for id. Myself and my friend proceeded to talk out our passports and drivers license and to our amazement we were told we needed a Garda age card! Despite obviously being over the required age, and having verified ID we were refused entry. Having entered another country with my passport I really thought there should be no issue getting into a bar! I hope to see inside of it some day, perhaps when my age card arrives !

We sat in the back enclosed area beside a heater but close to a door which leads to a laneway or another restaurant. People were in and out and as there is no natural close to the door we spent the night closing the door! Then I noticed several people smoking in the Upper part of the pub. This area was enclosed. I am not sure it qualifiés as a smoking area but security personnel assured me it was a smoking area. Pity as it does not fill me with confidence. We moved to the front area where it was lively, warm and a fantastic band were playing. Well done Mick Slattery. This redeemed our visit.

It's neat to say you've had a pint at Ireland's oldest pub, but beyond that, the bar is not unique. The atmosphere is lovely, and the staff is great. We sat on the back patio by the river and had a lovely conversation with two *very* tipsy locals, who kept us laughing for the better part of an hour. I had a delicious blood orange sour beer. It's worth visiting if you have the time in your schedule, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend it for international travelers who have time constraints.

My wife and I planned our first day in Ireland around coming to Sean's Bar for its historic value. We were told to come early to get a good seat to see the band. We had the best seats in the house. This bar is full of such much history. I wish I could listen to the walls. We did get to listen to some great music and see some fun dancing. The walls are adorned with patches from law enforcement agencies, fire departments, and more. There are also license plates from across the globe. What a fun place. If visiting Ireland, plan a night in Athlone!

Sean's Bar is a wonderful little pub to go for a drink or just sit and rest for a while. It is the oldest pub in Ireland. I was lucky enough to be there when a local group of musicians were playing. Everyone was very friendly and made you feel at home.

Athlone is a small enough town so Sean’s bar is within easy walking distance to all the hotels there. I particularly like the Sheraton Hotel.

We are spending the day in Galway. Would it be possible to travel to the pub by train for say dinner, and then catch a train to Dublin later that evening?
Written 2 June 2022
Not sure about the trains, but Sean’s doesn’t serve meals. We had hoped to have lunch there, but had to settle for a packet of crisps. Had an amazing cider, though - Orchard Thieves blood orange. Best ever!

Written 28 December 2016
Hi rumgurl, hope all is well with you. Yes there are trains from Heuston station Dublin to Athlone daily. We are only a five minute walk from the train station in Athlone. If you were planning to visit us for a night there are some great hotels in town to choose from too such as the Sheraton, Radisson Blu , Prince of Wales or Shamrock Lodge. See you soon !
