- Wayne C71 contributionsCobh Heritage Centre Finding Your Roots!A rainy day in Cobh, Ireland turned into one of the best days as we visited the Cobh Heritage Centre. This amazing museum tells the stories of the people who emigrated by ship and stopped at this port before embarking to America or other places around the world. They have computers to trace your family and the ship lists are available. Visitors could trace their family from origin of their ship to their arrival. Most Irish people coming to American came through Queenstown which is now Cobh. Many from Germany, Netherlands, Great Britain, came through this port as well. The museum had you feeling like you were walking in their shoes. Definitely not to be missed.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 23 September 2023
- timsimmkMilton Keynes, United Kingdom72 contributionsWorth spending a couple of hoursI think the Cobh heritage centre is good. It is situated adjacent to the railway station and is actually housed in the old station building. Unfortunately I didn't really have enough time to fully engage with the museum as I think to make the most of it you need to spend a couple of hours. I think it's most meaningful for people from Ireland or from one of the many places Irish emigrants travelled to from Cobh, but others can still enjoy the museum exhibits. The tragic tales of the Titanic and Lusitania are covered, along with earlier history.Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 9 November 2023
- Alex9 contributionsEnlightening private genealogy sessionChristy is a great genealogist! He researched our family history and uncovered a great deal of interesting information about our family roots in Ireland. He seemed to take a great deal of personal interest in our family history, really digging into the details and interpreting the facts in the context of his expert knowledge of Irish stories and history. He even went overtime to help us uncover more. We highly recommend him!!!Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 30 December 2023
- ShipahoyahoyPortsmouth, United Kingdom690 contributionsVey interesting heritage museum and helpful staff.Very interesting museum giving the history of Cobh, the story of the last port visited by 'Titanic' and the involvement of Ireland in the slave trade. Titanic photographs very interesting. Very friendly welcome on arrival by the member of staff at the ticket desk. All staff helpful and friendly. I asked a question that couldn't be answered at the time so I was given the email address of the manager. He replied the following morning. Great service. Informative audio guide. I visited on a rainy Sunday in March so the museum was fairly quiet. Nice little café. A very enjoyable 2 hours. The Heritage Centre is very easy to get to from Cork's Kent Railway Station and is just 2 minutes from Cobh station. The regular train service takes about 25 minutes.Thank you for the very kind comments, much appreciated. We were able to book an appointment. It was one of the highlights of our vacation. Our 17 year old son said it was the best part of the trip to Ireland. We highly recommend not only the Genealogy Appointment but the museum too.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 19 March 2024

- Tim P1 contributionA highlight of our trip to Ireland!I scheduled a one-on-one session with one of the museum's research experts (Kristopher) to further explore my Irish lineage. Kristopher was absolutely amazing! He was extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and a true expert on genealogy research. My one hour session with him revealed a wealth of information about my Irish ancestors that would've taken me weeks to months to uncover and my own research would've been less accurate. His sleuthing uncovered incorrect dates and key documents that helped us piece together several key pieces of information and helped me avoid going down countless erroneous rabbit holes. This one hour session turned out to be a highlight of our family trip to Ireland and well worth the small fee. I'd recommend this experience to anyone. Just make sure to come prepared with as much information as possible (names, dates, locations) to help him get the ball rolling.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 1 April 2024

- Ferenc MUnited Kingdom1,104 contributions100% must visit..its superb...Have to be honest the name looked really boring and the only reason we went her was the bar lady told us it was the best place in town to visit and she was so right. Its so brilliantly laid out and so informative. The Irish emigration, the Titanic etc all done brilliantly. Really interesting how people used to travel, both good and bad..and yes the Titanic film is a load of nonsense. You get a mock ticket when you go in with a persons name which you trach down as you go round. I drowned on the Titanic and my wife got transported to Australia... There is a section where you can try and track down about your relatives if they emigrated, which you have to pay extra for and people really loved it, but no good for us as not Irish at all. The gift shop is perfect too, if you are after that tacky 'Irish' stuff..who can resist a 'F@@king Eejit' t shirt'..not me.. All the staff everywhere are so friendly and helpful. This really is a 100% must visit place and would make the trip especially for this if in the area.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 August 2024

Day 1: We arrived at the Queenstory heritage centre, we firstly looked in the little gift shop. Then we asked the retail assistant ‘are you still open’ she replied yes. Then I went to the reception desk to buy tickets. And the ‘lady’ responded ‘Can you not see the sign? It’s closed bai’ (cork slang). Firstly, I am not your ‘bai’ and it would be nice to be treated with respect. I have worked at a five star tourism attraction and I have a degree in tourism. I doubt this ‘lady’ needs a few lessons in manners and a training course on how to greet customers/tourists. The ‘lady’ had strawberry ginger non-straightened hair. So then we decided to leave because I was disappointed and embarrassed for how someone could talk to a tourist in this way.
Why does one member of staff let me through and then another declines is entry? You are either open or closed at 4pm. Maybe you should close at 3:45pm if this centre is so anxious to get closed.
Day 2: We came back, I asked to use the toilet to another member of staff she said ‘no only customers can use the toilets’ I said ‘I was here only 2 days ago’ and she replied it was a new day’. She had shoulder length hair looked brown. So then I said ‘okay then’ so my boyfriend went in and described what happened previously to us with the admission desk: he asked her ‘what time do you close at? And she said ‘4pm’ even though we were declined entry when we arrived here before or at 4pm and they didn’t let us in. She replied ‘oh I wasn’t on that day’.
She didn’t even point me to the toilets elsewhere in the area. Very bad service I thought it was just one member of staff that was ignorant but seems to be the whole place. I would of thought they would be been jumping to welcome visitors back considering the Covid circumstances, where they have probably missed out on tourists to this area. The fact that we travelled 6 hours to spend a few days in Cork I wouldn’t want these people to be representatives of this area. Manners don’t cost anything.
I would NOT recommended this place to any of my family/friends, I wouldn’t want the same situation to happen to them.

This heritage centre is located in former railway buildings on the quayside at Cobh. It is literally a 2 minute walk from the station or from a visiting cruise ship as was our case. You can enter the premises without payment where there are a couple of shops and a small cafe. There is an admission charge for the heritage centre. The story if that of Irish emigration and the rural life of Ireland and how it was affected by the potato famine. Well worth a visit - learnt a lot did not realise how many irish people emigrated to England, USA, Canada and Colonies.

Probably not the best interpretation centre I’ve been in but the cafe is appalling the Keogh’s crisps were the best part of the order. The sandwich was ver poor, soggy all tomatoes little to no mozzarella and a leaf or two of rocket. Very poor fare indeed. The coffee which I take black was warm at best.
Should I have complained? Probably…. But I shouldn’t have to.

Meet with christy keating the genealogist at the center. He was able to find more information for me regarding my family’s Irish roots. Wished I would have had more time. If you book over the internet make sure your request has gone through so as not to be disappointed. Cobh is a lovely town and you can catch the train and go into cork for a visit. Thank you christy for your help, Sharon gingery

My family will be in Cork over the upcoming Easter weekend. We would like to visit the Cobh Heritage Centre on Easter Sunday, April 16, 2017. What hours will the centre be open that day? Using public transportation to visit from Cork, will the train schedule be impacted by the religious holiday? Does the cruise ship industry use this port all year long? Should one expect much cruise ship passenger traffic at the center on Easter Sunday?
Written 2 March 2017
Re: Your Query -
1. The Heritage Centre will be open on Easter Sunday 9.30 to 18.00
2. The Trains schedule will be the normal Sunday times
3. There will be no Cruise Liners in on that day - there will be one in on the
following day (Monday)
I do hope that you will enjoy your visit to our lovely town and that you have a memorable time in Ireland

I had sent a note to the genealogy person but have not gotten a response to my inquiry. We will be at your center on Aug. 15th. in the am. I would like to work with a genealogist as this was what is bringing to Ireland. I was told that you do not always have on available. Would someone please get back to me on this. Thank you, Diane

I don't get involved with that sort of stuff, however I did note that there wasn't a facility available at the visitor centre as far as I could see. There were some very good displays and really good information about the Titanic herself, life on board tc.
