This lighthouse has a long history that is captured in the exhibits in the various rooms. Although the original light has been replaced by modern electronics, the old equipment and procedures are clearly explained. Don't miss this interesting side trip if you're in the area.

In the 1920's, my grandmother, Hannah Sugrue, departed from her small town on Valentia Island to sail toward the United States...never to return again...which if she had not, I may not be here. That lighthouse represented a return of her spirit to her former home....More

This lighthouse is still in operation! Has to be seen to be believed. The drive or walk down to it is an adventure in itself. Not for the faint-hearted though. The history attached to this lighthouse dates back to the Viking era. Comfortable flat shoes...More

A very interesting visit to the lighthouse. Steeped in history and still operational. You could almost hear the vikings coming off their boats.

A must to visit while on valentia.It gives a great insight into life in years gone by and the important role of the light house keepers.fantastic views.The drive down is an adventure in its self.
