We came across this visitors centre by chance - it is located in a lovely position and it is a wonderful building. The lady who was in charge was excellent she was full of information about the centre and the local area. The building and the exhibits are well worth seeing.

The Barracks Heritage Center provides a comprehensive overview of the life of Daniel O'Connell who was born in this area. I gained a good deal of information and an enormous amount of respect for this man. He is truly a wonderful example of someone who lived his life to help others. Seeing this exhibit has inspired my son and I... More

I visited The Barracks Heritage Centre at end-September. I have a particular interest in Daniel O'Connell as I'm a Tour Guide in Glasnevin Cemetery in Dublin where Daniel O'Connell is laid to rest. The exhibition on Daniel O'Connell is superb and gives great background information and insights into the life and times of one of Ireland's greatest heroes. The Barracks... More

We were disappointed by this attraction. Inside it is a recently rebuilt-government-style-sterile-modern building. The exhibits are mostly large graphic prints with information about a local Irish political legend. Not relevant to a foreigner. The staff were very friendly and there were clean toilets and a cafe on main floor. Go check out the castle and forts nearby, they are free.... More

We took a walk down on a rather wet afternoon recently to this restored "castle" housing the old Barracks and learnt with astonishment about a Daniel O'Connell who lived in the 1800's and became a legend locally and even internationally for his unselfish work elevating Catholics to equality with their Protestant counterparts during English rule. However, he also was to... More

This is a great & highly informative place, mainly about the life & times of Daniel O'Connell, where we were warmly greeted by David (Mills), the General Manager. He took much time out to explain in advance to us (3 adults + 3 kids) what we were about to see & we adults were greatly impressed how he "hooked" the... More

The barracks themselves outside are very nice, but inside there was nothing to show the previous use of the building, to show how it was used as a barracks. Exhibition rooms have a lot of information on the walls about Daniel O'Connell, nothing that you couldn't find on the Internet. Need to get some exhibits.

Nothing should surprise me about Kerry, I know it so well, and yet there is an implied raised eyebrow in this review. I have written about the Daniel O'Connell church previously and in this I expressed surprise at its scale. A short walk away is the Old Barracks and I am gobsmacked. Kerry, and particularly the Kerry people, has a... More
