Veliki (that means "Great") Preslav was the capital of the Kingdom of Bulgaria from 893 till 969 and was considered as one of the most important and beautiful and magnificent towns of the Middle Ages in Europe which stood out with gorgeous buildings, highly decorated with gold and silver.
Quite a lot of the old town has been preserved - the fortress walls, some of the defensive towers, the famous Golden or "Round" church which was the most prominent building in town, parts of the water supply and sewage systems, etc. The area covers about 3.5 - 4 sq km making it the perfect spot to spend the day out in nature.
There is also an awesome museum close to the remains of the ancient fortress with lots of artefacts found/dug out in the area which is to be visited at the time you visit the fortress as the ticket includes both of them (abt 3 €). All info boards are both in Bulgarian and English.
For Bulgarians it is a must-visit place, for foreigners it will be quite interesting.

In the epoch of the Bulgarian Middle Ages Veliki Preslav is one of the most beautiful and majestic cities in Europe. During the reign of Tsar Simeon it became the capital of Bulgaria and the seat of the first Bulgarian literaly school. Many monuments of Pliska-Preslav culture are preserved in the town. The Southern Gate is one of the most impressive private of Veliki Preslav. A spiral staircase will take you to the top of the gate from when you can see much of the city and imagine that yoa are one of Tsar Simeon's guards. The second largest basilica in medieval Europe, the ruler's basilica, which is over 40 meters long was also an essential part of the city. The Round Church is a magical place-with endless vaults, niches, towers and columns. To express my astonishment i will use the words of John Exarch, "I don't know how to tell this-only with your own eyes you can be amazed by this beauty!"

Came here during winter time and not sure whether it’s somehow normal that no one actually looking after the place. It’s pretty rich history behind while reading all the information provided from the signboards. Though it could’ve been better if someone attending and ready to assist you with guide so you can read further while walking towards to each site. A great place to visit when you’re around the area. Great sign as well as how old Bulgaria is.

My wife and I visited the remains of the former Bulgarian capital located about 20km from Shuman during a 10-day holiday in Bulgaria.
When we arrived in our rental car, we immediately decided that it was not worth buying an entry ticket, as it was obvious that there was nothing of great interest there – just a lot of stone walls that had obviously been restored.
We therefore turned around and headed back to our hotel in Shuman.

Veliki Preslav was the capital of the First Bulgarian Empire from 893 to 972. It is interesting to wander in the archaeological park and imagine the grandeur of this medieval city. Unfortunately not much has remained from the palaces and churches.
The ticket at 6Lv gives access to the archaeological site, the church and the museum - the later being really worth a visit.

The old city of Veliki Preslav was once the glorious capital of the Bulgarian Empire in the middel age, about 9th century ("Golden Age").
Today, the remains of the vast city, palaces and churches can be visited. You can walk in the ruins and get an idea of life there in the past. (It reminds a bit of old Pompeji in Italy, but however, much smaller.)
For all those who are interested in Bulgarian history, this is a definitely a place to see. Also for others this location close to Shumen it is worth the small detour when traveling from West to East or vice versa through Bulgaria.
The museum nearby contains some informations and pieces, but I prefer the actual site.

For me, as a Bulgarian, I am proud of our history and this place has been our ancient capital when Bulgaria was an Empire! I wish it was better preserved, but the museum and the church are nice to visit.

With Pliska the first capital of Bulgaria, Veliki Preslav was the second one from 893 to 972 and one of the most important cities of medieval Southeastern Europe. The fortress is surrounded by forested hills and if you visit it in spring, you'll have the best surprise ever: lush green with mauve trees and a very pleasant smell in the air from the lilac flowers. We stayed there for 2 hours but you can easily spend more than these. It was an excellent walk through ruins, through history, through nature.
