Description:

This is a scheduled ancient monument site containing industrial mill ruins...

This is a scheduled ancient monument site containing industrial mill ruins in a state of picturesque decay. It is a wildlife conservation area and therefore there are no picnic areas, no paddling or swimming areas and no children's play areas. The route down through the Valley past the ruins is steep, muddy and uneven, with steps and some sharp drops to the sides. We strongly advise that you begin your walk at the top of the Valley, opposite Highfields Upper School (where there is parking). There are no toilet or refreshment facilities anywhere in the Valley. It is a peaceful place of natural woodland and wetland habitats, looked after by volunteers for the Arkwright Society, the Charity that owns the Valley. Please help us to take care of this very special place by respecting the wildlife, keeping to the paths, not climbing on the ruins - and taking your litter home with you.

Lumsdale Valley is a beautiful place, nicely hidden away. The waterfalls are beautiful and the old ruins are impressive. We parked at the top of the Valley by the school and walked down. It isn't a long walk- in fact we walked up and down a few times and our 2 year old managed it nicely. The kids really enjoyed... More

This review says everything. We, the Lumsdale Project, are so grateful for reviews like yours. It is lovely that so many people enjoy this precious Valley but please could everybody who is thinking about visiting Lumsdale read this review first. We try so hard to preserve this Valley for the future, but it is being destroyed by visitors less thoughtful... More

we visited here and we weren't dissapointed! what an amazing place. My son wore his wells and went into the shallow waters and stepping stones. The waterfalls were amazing, we took lots of pictures and sat by the waters, very picturesque and relaxing. Brilliant old buildings to explore too.

I'm lucky enough to live near this beautiful place and never tire of exploring the nooks and crannies of the tumbled down builldings. It is quiet most days and a peaceful environment just to enjoy nature at its best. Well worth going after a heavy downpour to see the water rushing down the valley. Hard to imagine that this place... We got recommended to visit here by a local in the pub by our campsite a few miles out of matlock and it didn't disappoint. Definitely off the beaten track of the busy town but worth the walk. Remains of mills dating back to 16th century and beautiful waterfalls it's like stepping back in time.

An absolutely beautiful place to visit. We have been many times over the years with being local. We had our wedding photos taken here too. It is a stunning place for a walk.

The presentation of this historic valley is continually being improved and is very nearly there. Having the luxury of 2 cars we used one to drive up the valley and park outside the school at the top to walk down. The frequent bulletin boards gave clear explanations of what we were seeing historically and the cascading water was a joy... More

Please note that parking is extremely limited at the bottom of the Valley. We strongly urge visitors to park only at the top of the Valley, in the road opposite High Fields School, and to avoid driving down the narrow road through the Valley if at all possible because of traffic congestion and road safety. Many thanks. More

Fantastic place that isn't really signposted. 10 - 15 minute walk and you come to Lumsden Falls. This is a great place for kids, mine are 6 & 9, to scramble over the rocks and get the odd foot wet! Even better is that parking on the road is free, as is are the falls.

Please note that due to severe erosion and disturbance to the natural woodland and wetland habitats, we do urge visitors to keep to the obvious paths down through the Valley as far as is possible. More
