A visit here anytime of year is quite special however, a visit here with the Autumn colours is enchanting. The National Trust volunteers are so lovely and knowledgeable it really makes for a fantastic visit.

We were revisiting and the autumn colours were stunning on a bright sunny day. Had a very pleasant stroll around the lake but wear walking boots / wellies as the paths can have puddles at this time of year. Everything we could wish for from...More

A lovely day out, however be prepared for a lot of visitors at this time of year at the weekend especially. My only complaint would be that I think that you should be able to pay separately for the house and gardens. The house is...More

It is a beautiful place. It has changed somewhat over the years but my parents took walks there when they met and later we would be taken, somewhat bored as children often are if you want to take photographs but I have not been back...More

Gorgeous grounds, resplendent in the Autumn sunshine, perfect setting, tranquil despite the crowds. Happy to make the journey to enjoy the setting. We couldn't linger long due to the bitingly cold wind but for a tramp through the leaves in a fabulous colourful setting Stourhead...More

A super walk around the gardens and lake, amazing autumn colours. A wonderful dry, blue sky sunny day. Peaceful and beautiful.

Well worth the travel from Reading. Beautiful gardens wonderful walk. Easy to find as just off main road, loads of parking spaces. Food in the pub is much better than the food in the centre.

VISITED on Sunday 6th November 2016. We arrived early for opening about 10.45 and were dircted to the car park. There was a queue, but staff were so well organised and as we are National Trust members we were able to access the gardens quickly....More

Unfortunately no dogs are allowed into the grounds until 4pm. I don't know why this is but there are signs at the start and around the park saying this.

Hi Claire, There are various follies in the grounds where you could shelter but nothing specific for picnics.
