- Emma BKidlington, United Kingdom4 contributionsMagic!Magic! Such a privilege to be welcomed into the home of Gloria and Theo. Fabulous food and so much to learn about the hummingbirds. Always good to get learning off the page and what better place to do it! Theo is so passionate and we came away with so much to think about. Thank you.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 February 2024
- Chicago U1 contributionA hidden gemWhat a wonderful experience. Theo knows everything about these birds, well almost everything (when he doesn't know he says he doesn't). There is so much I was unaware of and what i learned filled in the gaps. It really is a hidden gem. The birds came to visit, we saw some very rare Hummingbirds he hoped would show up and they did, twice. Lunch was DELICIOUS and service was impeccable. I have told so many residents who haven't heard about this place and will now visit. I will return on my next trip.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 27 June 2024
- AdventuresOfMJR2 contributionsPhenomenal ExperienceWow, wow, wow! A simple visit to see a few hummingbirds ended in a deep love for these phenomenal birds, a beautiful afternoon of learning, tea with a trini-twist, hundreds of beauties fluttering and zipping, and an overall joyful experience. I highly recommend for persons who love nature, tranquility, learning and an afternoon with a difference.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 29 June 2024

You will be far better off visiting Asa Wright Nature Centre. Instead of being able to see and experience being so close to the humming birds you will be subjected to a rambling, long winded lecture littered with dubious facts on the Amerindians. When I visited this lasted for nearly 90 minuted with less than 5 minutes spent on information on humming birds. The cost of the tour was eye watering.

We spent an amazing morning here. Theo and his wife were fabulous hosts and made this trip a very memorable one. We had a 10 y.o. boy with us and Theo made sure to include him, by asking questions and imparting his knowledge to us all. It was a magical experience eating, drinking and learning so much about the history of the island and of this magical creature, all in beautiful surroundings, and with numerous hummingbirds up very close. I would definitely go back if I was in Trinidad again. It was one of the highlights of our trip.

Yerette is a private home up in the mountains with a garden designed to attract hummingbirds. You can see 14 of the 18 species of hummingbirds that live in Trinidad. Theo is passionate about hummingbirds and loves to talk about them. His wife served a light lunch, with fresh, hot rolls. You will see many hummingbirds here and learn a lot about them.

My visit of about 3 hours ended up being 5.
The pros- there are plenty of hummingbirds and different kinds, the food was great as well.
The cons - the point about the name Yerette turned into a two hour rambling lecture about how racist US is. All the atrocities against Amerindians. Fair points if you are attending a lecture on history, nothing to do with hummingbirds. The slideshow was about the same. All in
I spent about 15-20 minutes with the hummingbirds.
It’s an interesting place to visit but I would clarify in advance what to expect

Spent the day here which included a fantastic late breakfast and lunch. Both with fresh local ingredients. Wonderful setup to watch and photograph a myriad of hummingbirds. All close up. Able to take lots of photos. The presence of all the birds, feeders, and flowers allows one to set up the shot including playing with exposures.

My wife and I visited this "attraction" last month, hoping to photograph hummingbirds in a natural setting. We did not wish to attend Theo's presentation, as we were heading to Caroni Swamp in about an hour.
Theo came over to welcome us. I told him we were not here for the presentation, but to take photographs. He stated that it must be nice to be experts who know everything about hummingbirds, then walked away. Very personable...
After his presentation, which was more like a first year college introduction to hummingbirds, he came over to us and asked what he had done to make us upset with him. I explained that we came to photograph hummingbirds, as I told him at first.
Time to leave, sitting in our van for 15 minutes, I go over to our guide to see what the holdup was. He said Theo was explaining to two women which bird guide they should buy, and would open the gate for us to leave when he was done.
Ten minutes later, he walked approximately 10 feet to press a button to open his gate.
Our advice: stay clear of this pompous individual. His setting wasn't particularly inviting, and there were few opportunities to take photos in a natural setting.
If you are visiting Asa Wright, then no need to come here for a second-class experience!

The experience is taken away due to the host sharing too much. While I appreciate that he is proud of his place and has a passion for birds, he should be cognizant to the fact that not all his visitors are as interested in a presentation about the birds. I'd take a gamble and say most people want to just be surrounded by the birds, ask questions, relax and take home the memory of a peaceful place. However, my experience, and the ones of the dozens of people who have shared with me is always punctuated with.."Yerette is great, BUT...the time spent looking at the birds was too short/the presentation was too long."
That said, there should be a selection of experiences. Those who want to just visit; those who want to visit and have refreshments; and the full blown ornitholigical experience.

How far out of Trinidad is it and how do you get there. Also, approximate length of time to be there.
Written 1 August 2016
Its about 45mins-1.5hrs drive depending on traffic and you can spend anywhere between 1-2 hours including hi-tea and a video show

How steps the route. I am unaccustomed to driving on steep roads as the other members of the party. What would you recommend. can I park at the bottom of the hill and walk up.
Written 24 July 2016
If you aren't accustomed to steep driving, I would suggest you don't take your car as it is very steep and even good drivers would find going up a little difficult. Parking down and walk is a good idea if you have good stamina as it is not very fast. Also note that there is very limited parking in the place

Hi there
Do you happen to have the email or phone contact for anyone at Yerette? Trying to go there this week, but can't find any contact info. Thanks for your help!

what is the best way to get to Yerette from the cruise ship terminal?
Written 10 January 2015
At the Cruise Ship complex, there are taxis there you can hire who know where to go. But if the Ship offers the tour, take it. The thing is, you have to book at least 24hrs. before.. Therefore, when booking tours on ship, if not offered, ask to book it. It can be booked through the agent in Trinidad.
