We really lucked out and managed to tag along with another group who had an English speaking guide who really, really new his stuff. If he hadn't been there I think I would have struggled to get much out of the museum as although there are many photos and artefacts to see it is the story behind them that is the fascinating bit. It was hard to take pictures inside as (like many museums) the design didn't take into account all the reflections you get off the windows. It was also boiling hot inside when we were there and no fans to cool us. You do, of course, get a very Cuban-biased view of the invasion and Castro the Hero, but a great insight into what went so spectacularly wrong for the Americans.…

This is must-see visit for any aficionados of Cuban history and the struggle of the Cuban revolutionaries to establish themselves after the fall of Batista. A CIA sponsored invasion of Cuban exiles, opponents of Castro, took place here in 1961, and it was a humiliation for the counter-revolutionary forces, and not a little embarrassing for the recently elected American president, JFK. Not surprisingly, the museum presents a stirring story of Cuban resilience against an imperialist aggressor, and it’s a great story indeed, despite the lack of very much translation into English. However, the maps, diagrams and photographs (some of the images of revolutionary fervour need little in the way of explanation) largely speak for themselves and there’s a very decent display of aircraft and weaponry in the forecourt.…

Very interesting place to visit, with a bit of knowledge of Spanish or French you can actually read and understand all texts. Nothing is in English. There is a small cinema which shows a really interesting documentary on the Pigs Bay invasion. Not to be missed.

As such the museum is a good walkthrough the period before and during the invasion of Playa Giron. It is less propaganda then you'd think, so that was nice to not have a too one sided picture. But to get the most out of it you need to have a good level of spanish to get it all.

Debra and I decided a visit to Cuba was incomplete unless we visited the Bay of Pigs and learned more about the invasion in 1960. While the drive from Havana was long (about 3 hours), our guide was very informative about the invasion, who supported it, and why it failed so badly. Then, we visited the Giron Museum and saw the artifacts to support the guides stories. It amazed me to see the ancient war machines used by the insurgents. I was also very impressed by the local people who stood up to the invaders until the stronger military units arrived. The invasion was stopped and defeated in Giron in less than three days! A very good side benefit of this trip is to see the beautiful beaches of Giron. We did not have time to enjoy them but the were stunning in their beauty! Enjoy!…
