About
The mine "wheal Blinman" was the reason for the establishment of the town. The town is named after shepherd Robert "Pegleg" Blinman who discovered copper on a hill while tending his flock of sheep. Now some 150 years later the mine has breathed new life into the town, drawing people interested in history, mining, minerals and outback life. People come on tour and over the course of a little over an hour step back into time and experience a taste of life in the 1860's, complete with sounds of mining through an innovative sound system. Our visitors leave not only with an appreciation of the lives of the Cornish miners who settled in Blinman but also of the determination and dedication to a small (very small, just 20 people) group of people who saw the opportunity to breathe new life into a town. The tour is suited to all ages, we particularly like taking families and kids on tour. Suitable for groups with prior booking. Bookings recommended at all times.

- Anne ALeeds, United Kingdom165 contributionsWell worth the driveDecided to visit the mine while visiting Hawker and glad I did. I was the only person on the last tour of the day, so a real personal experience. Mike was my guide. He was a mine of info (non pun intended) really knowledgeable without being boring. He took his time explaining every aspect of the mine and answering any questions. A great experience and wish I'd booked to stay in the area. Its definitely special! A big thanks to Mike for making it so interesting.Hello Hella1, Many thanks for your review and recommendation, we are so pleased you enjoyed the tour, it is a gem (no pun intended). - Alan J6 contributionsBrilliant tour - Not to be missed if you are in the area.Fantastic tour. Susan was a wonderful guide - very informative but great fun too. We were the last tour of the day and, even though there were only two of us, the tour went ahead. The mine was incredible and the way it is all presented is superb. It also felt safe, but you could imagine how dangerous it would have been working in the mine more than a century ago. If you are staying anywhere in the area, this tour is not to be missed. Good value for money too.Hello R8698TWalanj Thank you so much for your review, it was a great fun tour, so pleased you enjoyed it. Times are certainly different today, all the safety back up, but such respect for the miners of old! - Noel & KylieChristchurch, New Zealand13 contributionsWell worth a trip into the mine! This was a great experience and especially enhanced by Mikes knowledge, care and commentary. My wife was very apprehensive about going underground however, this was alleviated greatly by Mikes safety briefing and in particular, the offer to leave the mine if anyone felt uncomfortable. This helped make it a great experience for her. I managed to get my parents in the tour as well and we all highly recommend it. The tour takes around one hour, is near to Blinman and you can walk around the site above ground before or after the tour. Helmets and lights are supplied and the only clothing requirement was closed toe footwear, otherwise it was lovely and cool for us Kiwis. We went through in shorts and tee shirts. We also spent a night at the nearby "Onya" campground also run by Mike. A lovely basic camp with a great view and we were able to walk to the nearby hill on Mikes recommendation, thanks so much Mike.Hello Kyno13, Many thanks for your enthusiastic review, so pleased you felt safe and well cared for on our tour. Our group of 9 thoroughly enjoyed the Blinman Mine Tour, our guide Susan was a wealth of knowledge and added humour into her tour. We were so impressed that the whole set up was run by Volunteers.
The kids loved the chocolate rock hand outs and being involved as she took us around.
Would highly recommend making an effort to go to Blinman and take the time to stop off and get one of the bakeries pies.
Would recommend you pre-book.

We’re a family of 2 adults & 2 kids (13 & 11) on a road trip through South Australia. Locals at Wilpena Pound Resort recommended we visit Blinman and we are so glad we did. The tour of the old copper mine was incredibly interesting to us all - fascinating to hear both the stories of the miners and also how the township in the 21st century banded together to restore the mine to show us the ways of the 19th century miners. Sally, our guide, was excellent, a lovely local Station owner working casually to enable the mine tour manager to have some time off. If you are in the Flinders Ranges, I definitely recommend you book this tour.

Hello Zalibali,
Many thanks for your review, we all love keeping our history alive.
Makes us appreciate our lifestyle and comforts today,.especially on a hot summers day. The miners were cooler underground, their poor families would have had a tough time above ground!

What a hidden gem! We are so happy to have stumbled upon this wonderful tour guided by Susan. More than just a walk through a mine, Susan vividly bought the whole experience to life, with stories and information on the lives of the miners and townsfolk. We talked about it for the whole 2 hour journey back to our hotel. Another highlight is that the current Blinman residents poured heart and soul into bringing this project to fruition. They ought to be congratulated. Highly recommended

The Blinman mine tour is a must do if travelling through the Flinders Ranges. Less than an hour drive from the Wilpena Pound Resort along an incredibly scenic sealed road, the Blinman Mine is a fascinating piece of South Australian history. Well-maintained by volunteers, the surface side has excellent signs explaining the history and workings of the mine. The underground mine can be visited on a guided tour led by a group of entertaining and informative volunteer guides. Strongly recommend booking in advance as the tours do book out, especially during the school holidays.

We never booked ahead and were lucky to get a place for the two of us on the 10.00am tour. Numbers were restricted to 12 to satisfy Covid19 requirements. The lady conducting the tour was very informative and organised and ensured that we all moved around within the mine in accordance with current social distancing laws. Well worth the effort!

We thoroughly enjoyed our tour with Fiona through the mines at Blinman. She was interactive with all people on the tour, including our 8 and 10yo kids, helping to keep their interest as well as ours. The tour goes into the tunnels of the original copper mine, so it’s not for those who may feel claustrophobic, though tunnels are always at walking height (no crawling required!) A great way to experience and learn about this part of the area’s history. It is recommended to book as groups are limited to around 10-12 people.

Susan took us on a very informative tour of the Blinman Underground Mine. This 1 hour experience is well worth your visit. The history of the mine is well worth hearing. I would recommend the 11am tour so you could then enjoy the Cornish pastie at the Miners Crib Bakery.

A well paced one hour journey back to 1800s to a time when Blinman mine attracted more than a thousand people to make their fortune. Dan our guide was friendly and knowledgeable. I bought my 4 year old along and he was enthralled.

As oldies, some with hearing aids, we found the guide so easy to listen too, hearing his clear description of the mine & its history.
Very glad we all decided to do this tour.
One of our group is not keen on going underground & she found the outside are interesting too, taking the hour to wander around up top.

Hello 878mariane,

Yes folks if you weren't sure there is an above ground walking trail, with interpretive signage which compliments the underground tour, ideal for those a bit claustraphobic.
