About
The mine "wheal Blinman" was the reason for the establishment of the town. The town is named after shepherd Robert "Pegleg" Blinman who discovered copper on a hill while tending his flock of sheep. Now some 150 years later the mine has breathed new life into the town, drawing people interested in history, mining, minerals and outback life. People come on tour and over the course of a little over an hour step back into time and experience a taste of life in the 1860's, complete with sounds of mining through an innovative sound system. Our visitors leave not only with an appreciation of the lives of the Cornish miners who settled in Blinman but also of the determination and dedication to a small (very small, just 20 people) group of people who saw the opportunity to breathe new life into a town. The tour is suited to all ages, we particularly like taking families and kids on tour. Suitable for groups with prior booking. Bookings recommended at all times.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Decided to visit the mine while visiting Hawker and glad I did.
I was the only person on the last tour of the day, so a real personal experience.
Mike was my guide. He was a mine of info (non pun intended) really knowledgeable without being boring. He took his time explaining every aspect of the mine and answering any questions.
A great experience and wish I'd booked to stay in the area. Its definitely special!
A big thanks to Mike for making it so interesting.

It was great to go into a working mine and the tour guide was very good. It was a good experience. It must of been hard work in those days to get through that rock to find copper.

Hello Explorer42873564060, Many thanks for your review, it certainly would have been hard work, we are fortunate to have better equipment than the miners of old. Susan

Fantastic experience. We were lucky to get in the last tour of the day and we were so glad we did. The guide Barbara was just brilliant and they have done an amazing job resurrecting the mine as a tourist attraction

We thoroughly enjoyed our tour with Fiona through the mines at Blinman. She was interactive with all people on the tour, including our 8 and 10yo kids, helping to keep their interest as well as ours. The tour goes into the tunnels of the original copper mine, so it’s not for those who may feel claustrophobic, though tunnels are always at walking height (no crawling required!) A great way to experience and learn about this part of the area’s history. It is recommended to book as groups are limited to around 10-12 people.

Very informative tour run by local residents, as is the small town.
I found the tour interesting as well as the information on the town which effectively runs itself, not coming under any shire or council.

Very knowledgeable Tour Guides, and fun too. For a whole hour, ours had everyone's attention with the amazing history of the mine, as well as lots of interesting anecdotes of the men and boys who came through the mine over the years.

It was great to hear that the community banded together to re-open the mine for tourists, which is helping keep this little town going.

This was an excellent tour of this old, no longer working mine. The tour is an hour long and is definitely enhanced by the fantastic tour guide Mike. Mike was very knowledgeable about the workings of this mine when in was in production and he was very approachable and made the tour very enjoyable. The miner's worked in horrible conditions and the life expectancy was around 35-37 years of age.

Feel and see the ghosts of a 100+YO copper mine in, at the time, one of Australia's most inhospitable mining regions... Blinman in SA's Flinders Ranges. A gorgeous little town, loved by the handful of local residents left.

A great resourceful way for a small town to maximise advantages of its history. Guide was well informed and interesting giving insight into the work and dangers of early mining operations here.
