Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Soswaewon is a small traditional Korean garden that plays second fiddle to the bamboo forest for most Damyang visitors. It is one of the more picturesque spots in Korea that looks like it’s straight out of a painting. Only annoying thing about the visit was the little stream area which was infested with mosquitos in the summer.

Who knew exile could be so peaceful? This remote location is the real-life place of exile for an important Joseon politician in the early 16th century. The scenery is superb, and one can easily imagine a brilliant (ambitious) politician being sent here for a life of poetry and solitude.
Soswaewon Garden is a classic example of Korean garden design. While many will be familiar with Japanese and Chinese gardens, Korean garden design is still (sadly) unrecognized internationally. Korean garden design is less structured, more natural, and brilliantly colored during spring and fall. Indeed, some have mentioned Korean gardens lack so many artificial features they are difficult to recognize as a designed landscape.
During my visit to Damyang I enjoyed this garden for its bright green foliage, historic location, and quaint stream. Walking to the site you are rewarded with a splendid view of the property.

Trees, stream, and buldings are well harmonized and make a calm and simple but beautiful view.
The view is good but it is more famous for it's historical sugnificance, I think.
30 minites was enough for me.
However, please take some time at the highest building to enjoy the view from there. It's the building the owner of the garden used to read books.

I visited in April 2017 and the gardens were being renovated and were closed. Please check to see if it is open before making a trip down here as it's quite remote. I'm pretty sure the garden is stunning when open! Unfortunately all I got to see was a bunch of diggers :)

There was small garden, but the view was excellent to us. The entrance fee was a little higher than I think, but it was worth to enjoy seeing this painting. I was impressed with this view, smell, atmosphere and feelings. I've visited many place in Korean, this place was one of beautiful place with view. Recommendable place.

This garden is closed for renovation as at May 2017. No Indication on website. Most of the garden can be seen from the access road without going in except for the inside of the buildings.
Okay for a visit if you are passing by but not worth the effort if you make a special trip

A small traditional style garden with a small brook running through it. It was rather busy even though it was under construction. I imagine as being a nice place to visit if it was quiet so possibly early morning or in inclement weather. If I was in the neighborhood I was stop by but I dont think it is a place worthy of a trip on its on.

A gentleman, Sanbo Yang, retired out of a purge of Confucian scholars in the era of Joseon Dynasty came here and built this garden. There is a pavilion looking down a stream flow. You can see bamboo and pine forests in there.

It's very nice to drive about maximum 30 mins from Gwangju. It's quiet small, but it's very nice to visit to see how the Joseon dynasty's garden look like. Very peaceful place to heal yourself or with good friends with less than USD10 each.

Purportedly the retired official who created the garden of Soswaewon had other yangban practically begging for an invitation to visit. This garden is not huge, but it is lovely and very natural feeling. The sound of the stream in particular enhances the sense of peacefulness.
