If you want to try a winter experience, I would recommend this ice fishing festival. Fishing on a frozen river is an exciting experience.
The organiser have allocated an area for foreigners and staff are able to speak English so communication is not an issue.
You are able to move around the area to try the different holes to get your fish. Each person is allowed a maximum of 3 fishes. Staff are at hand to help you removed the hooks from the fish once you caught it.
After which you can bring your fish to the kitchen and they will grill it for you.
It is a good activity for an individual traveller or a group.

Our group enjoyed snow sledding, ice fishing, korean snacks and grilled trout. The overall experience was wonderful.

Went with my wife and 4 year old on our recent trip to Korea on a weekday and we all have a really fun day out. We booked the trip on the Funko website with Korea Tours and were picked up within 100 metres from our hotel in Myeongdong. Comfortable bus took about 2 hours to get up to the festival nestled in the mountains, where the activities were all explained by a friendly guide. It wasn't crowded and we tried the ice fishing, ice sledding, assorted sleds and the price of the tour also included a food voucher for lunch. Our favorite part of the festival was the indoor ice sculptures. It was advertised as 5000 won per person but the lady just waved us in for some reason and it was fabulous. A bit like a kiddies play gym made from ice. This one was a bit away from the main festival (500-750m perhaps) and a little tricky to find but we managed (It's right next door to the cinema). People there were very friendly and many stopped to try and talk to us. Highly recommended day trip if visiting South Korea.

So, at first I would like to mention, than I am not a tourist and I live in South Korea for almost 4 years already. I am a foreigner married to a Korean national, so it is not my first time in Korea. This weekend we decided to visit Hwacheon Ice festival for the first time and totally regretted it. I speak higher intermediate Korean, so I thought that visiting the festival is not going to be a problem at all, but I was yet to know that staff here is judgemental and rude to foreigners. They just look at my face and scream rude english words, even though I tell them in Korean that I don’t understand that they were saying. Left with ruined mood and worse memories ever. I would reccomend choosing something else for your vacation, as my experience was not good at all. It is overpriced as well!
If you don’t speak english, you should not scream random english words you remember at my face. I as you a question in Korean and you can’t even answer? Then, you should not even work there.
I how Hwacheon Ice Festival will reconsider their staff choices. Until the staff is changed, I am not coming back. Ever, and not reccomending it to anyone else.

About 1-1.5 hours from Seoul. It's absolutely unique experience only can do in winter in Korea. Entrance fee is around 10,000 Won. For tourists and locals, our fishing area are separated. Will be given a fishing rod and you find your own ice-hole to catch fish. Maximum 3 fish per person. If you failed to get any, they will give you one during the exit. There are facilities whereby you can ask them to cook your fish. Price range around 3,000 - 5,000 Won.
Other than fishing activity, there are more fun rides on ice, concert and few stalls that serve local food.

We came with a tourists group of 65 people and we really enjoy this day in ice festival ! So many activités proposed there (ice fishing, quad on ice, hand fishing...). We appreciated the general atmosphere on this event even if you were so cold (-15 degrees). Super nice moment ! Thanks a lot to make us discover winter in South Korea !

Really well organised and interesting event for the family.
Got our fishing rods and tickets then off we went ice fishing. My young kids 2 and 3 year old had loads of fun. After catching the fish we had them grilled at a tent for 3000krw each. Even if you dont catch any you still can get grilled trout at that same price so technically it makes no difference whether you catch any. Just really for the experience and fun.
Great service, friendly staff and many activities available for everyone.
An experience that shouldnt be missed.

This ice fishing festival has been running for a number of years now and they have been able to keep up the momentum from year to year. The main activity is the titular ice fishing, and it is a great activity. There are also restaurants on the grounds that will cook up your fish. In addition there are plenty of other ice related activities to be had on the ice.
