Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Jan 2015 we hired a car from Lima and headed south to check out the Southern Peruvian beaches (from Lima to Paracas Bay). On the way we stopped in Cerro Azul - it's got a small plaza where we are street food, a sandy beach, some surf, good restaurants. Quite a relaxed, friendly beach town. Worth a visit if you are looking for a beach south of Lima.

Cool little tourist town, lots of restaurants and shopping, when you come into the beach at town if you are driving do not go right or north, you will get flooded by people trying to get you to eat in there restaurants. It's crazy.

Awful town. Very disorganized and neglected. Tiny market. Bad food in general. Went to a couple of restaurants after looking at the reviews and they were just closed! Flies everywhere and people smoking inside restaurants. Order fried fish at La Anchoveta Restaurant and it was raw and soaked in oil, obviously not fresh, cold rice and yucas. Old tables and dirty floor. Terrible quality-price relationship. Streets are dark at night and it’s very scary to go for a walk. No restaurants/cafes open at 8:30pm! What? Accommodation offer is very basic or less than that. The beach is not very nice either. Clean seawater but rocks and rubbish in the dark sand all along the shore! Lots of work to do before this town becomes a tourist place for locals and foreigners

Came across this town while exploring Peru March 2013. Wasn't quite sure how to rate this one. At first impression, it was really depressing. Very poor. Half the tiny homes are run down and abandoned. However, after staying a week, I have grown somewhat fond of it.
First, the surfing is awesome! And I'm not a surfer but I did give it a shot. It is a little gem within the surfing community. If surfing is what you came here to do, then this is the place! It is literally wave after wave of huge crashing fun.
The best and really only surfing school is run by Emmanuel Sanchez, "Huarco". He is very friendly, and I watched throughout the week as he turned first timers into surfers, both kids and adults. Huarco Esquela de Surf (school of surf) is the name and its directly on the beach on the left side. He is highly recommended. He has taught professional competitors how to first surf!
There is another guy that rents surfboards but he is very unfriendly and acts as if he could care less and that you're bothering him.
It is difficult to rate the town. I gave the high marks only for the beach and surfing, not the town itself. Once you settle in at one of the many Hostals, the beach is great. The sunsets are amazing and the beachside food is good, however there isn't much else to do. I stayed at the Cerro Azul Hostal which I found to be the cleanest and friendliest. Enjoy.
