This building called the Konzil is called that because it was there that the Council from Konstanz gathered from 1414 to 1418 to elect a new Pope, Martin V, when there were 3 religious men disputing the right to be Pope.

The building is from 1388 and was previously a warehouse for grains. It´s located in the border of the old town of Konstanz, close to the harbor and to the central station. Nowadays the building is used for events, concerts and exhibitions. When I visited, there was an exhibition about the Council, since in 2014 the city is celebrating the 600 years of the Council. The exhibition was simple, but well organized to teach kids as well as adults about the Council.

Beginning life as a warehouse from 1388 it is wonderfully preserved. Fulfilling numerous roles during its lengthy history, it is deemed the largest preserved secular building in southern Germany.

It was fascinating to learn that during the Council of Constance in the early 1400s the conclave for Pope Martin V’s election took place here.

Council Building

When arriving in Konstanz from Friedrichshafen by Katamaran, the first building you see upon leaving the boat is the Konzil building (“Konzilgebäude”) on the right. The German word “Konzil” stands for council and refers to the Council of Constance [1414 – 1418]. In the year 1417 a conclave took place here and a catholic pope was elected.

In front of it is a monument dedicated to Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin, a German general and aircraft manufacturer, who founded the Zeppelin airship company. To this day he is probably the most famous person from Konstanz.

Local people refer to it simply as “Das Konzil” rather than Konzil building.

The building was designed as a warehouse and trading place for merchants coming from Italy and Switzerland , crossing the border only a few hundred metres away.

Today it serves as a museum for temporary exhibitions and as a meeting or conference hall. There is a restaurant with a view on the harbour and the marina on Lake Constance.

Next to the Konzil is a spacious tunnel leading to the historical city centre with its shopping area, located in a car free pedestrian zone.

From here you can walk to the border and cross into Switzerland within five minutes.

All other highlights of a Konstanz city tour are in walking distance from the Konzil building, except for Mainau, the flower island, which is located around seven kilometres from here.

A real-life "Game of Thrones" played out right here, in this building, between 1414 and 1418. The major political, social, and ecclesiastical forces of Europe were present and had a stake in the proceedings of the meeting (Council of Constance) that happened here. Certainly anyone who likes history will love visiting this site, especially during the 600th anniversary commemoration events that are happening from 2014-2018. When I visited, there was a museum set up in the building that helped detail the history of the Council of Constance and its major figures. I believe it no longer there now, however it is still worth a visit, and you will be richly rewarded for a little historical background reading prior to your visit.

I have been going to Konstanz, Germany since 1997. I inherited 3 different parcels of land. I have traveled extensively in Switzerland, Austria, and Germany over 20 times.
Exceptional as a base and traveling the area. I thank God - I have been fortunate to travel there as a young man! Definitely worth a visit!

Although we were at the restaurant outside, but interested in the history of the building we went in next day to look at the exhibits. It is indeed worth a visit to know about the history of this part of Germany.

I found this place really interesting as it showed how an extraordinary medieval event was impacting the normal people and how at that time everything went much quiter with 24 hour news cycle.

We were traveling in Constance and passed the Konstanz Council located at the port. As a good sight in the city, we recommend the Council!
