Sumenep is one of the most interesting small cities in Indonesia, but it receives very few tourists. With the cities of Java more and more crowded with cars and thoughtless development, people in search of 'old world' Asia could do much worse than head to Madura, a very traditional place. Easily the most charming town on Madura is Sumenep, a former royal city. At the heart of this historic city is Sumenep Kraton- the former palace, now a museum- and the Great Mosque, one of the country's most whimsical and appealing mosques. The colourful entrance gate is striped yellow and white and features swastika motifs, once a Buddhist design before the Nazis usurped it. The mosque itself has also maintained its traditional lines and its very photogenic.

Located at Sumenep city centre, this mosque is instantly recognisable by its bright white and yellow colour. Adopting Chinese-style minaret, this beautiful mosque is part of the Sumenep "keraton" (royal palace) complex. It is one of the oldest mosques in Indonesia, having fully built in the year 1787 AD. Worth a visit when in Sumenep.

I wonder why many people come to Surabaya and around but do not visit Madura, especially Sumenep, the most interesting place in Madura. They have BATIK, Historical Places, splendid beach that still natural, etc. Maybe there is no promotion from local government and also lack of infra structure. But now they have SURAMADU that connecting Java and Madura Island. So, any time you visit Surabaya, do not forgat to spend your time to Sumenep, about 3-4 hours from Surabaya.

Mosque Jami' (Great) of Sumenep is not only unique but also it has shown multiple values. It was designed by Chinese people whose name is Lauw Pia Ngo. The overall existence of the mosque has eclectic influence, a mixture of Chinese, local Javanese, and western style; typical of the cities on the north of Java. It is located in a center of Sumenep City. As we know in javanese urban structure, we find the order of mosque, urban park and "Keraton" (a palace complex where the king lived in). In Madura we can find this case in Sumenep. The place of mosque is suitable for us to take a photo. You must visit Great Mosque of Sumenep..

If you think an old mosque will look dark and smell not fresh, you got to be wrong this time. Great Mosque in Sumenep is very well managed in the heart of the city, in front of Sumenep Central Park. We can find a nice and clean place for ablution at the right side of entrance gate, and proceed to go inside the mosque. The ornament with white and yellow color will stun the view. It looks very clean and fresh with cool air, which let you focus on your prayer.

The great mosque, Masjid Agung Sumenep, was formerly part of the palace complex. It is very much the heart of the city, and like the rest of the city, is painted in bright and pleasant colors. The great gate, in pearl white and lemon yellow with occasional lines of black for contrast, is downright iconic. (See photio.) Unlike almost every other mosque on Madura, this one is not topped by a dome. Instead traditional Indonesian roofs were used: four-sided and sharply peaked. (See photo) After independence the RI promoted this national style in numerous modern buildings: the Soekarno-Hatta airport is one. The Masjid's traditional lines, however, have nothing to do with 20th century attempts to revive a national style: they ARE traditional. The mosque was begun in 1779 and completed in 1787: Sumenep was a prosperous sultanate then, while the United States was still a confederation of independent states, and Marie Antoinette was still spending royal monies like there was no tomorrow.
Note: at the moment they're touching up paint on the mosque itself, but it doesn't appear to be anything major, and doesn't detract from the visit. Sumerep can get remarkably hot: it's 7 degrees S of the equator; so the small garden inside the mosque is visually refreshing. (See photo). So too can be the public toilets--the only ones I saw in the town., note that you should doff shoes or sandals before heading to one. And of course, dress appropriately.
