The Flor de Caña tour in Chichigalpa is something you definitely can't miss if you're visiting Nicaragua. From the start, you're immersed in the rich history and legacy of this famous rum. It's a very interesting tour where you learn everything about the rum-making process, from the ingredients to the aging. The facilities are amazing and really showcase the brand's greatness. Whether you're a rum fan or simply looking for a unique experience to learn more about the local culture, this is a must-see. Highly recommended!

Visited the factory after a recommendation from a fellow traveller. Would definitely recommend it to everyone. The tour includes a bit of history about the rum, the family and the surrounding area. They show you a video which includes the rum distillation process, their local philanthropy efforts and their market reach.
After that, you get to go into the family's private tasting room. In here, with one of the factory employees, you go through the entire tasting process for the 18 años rum, which was very intriguing and informative.
After this you see the barreling areas and go into one of the storage sheds. A great day out for all
Transport Information:
We caught the local chicken bus their and back which was incredibly easy but it took me quite a while to figure out how to do it. Return chicken buses cost us $1 per person and $20 for the tour of the factory, compared to an organised tour from leon costing Upwards of $35 dollars
You simply go to the bus station in leon, the one next to the market to the north. Once here, look for the bus saying "Leon-Chichigalpa-Chinandega". One may not be there when you arrive, but they leave every 10-15 minutes, so just wait. Then you get off the bus just after the turnoff to chichigalpa when you see the Flor de caña factory on your right. You can't miss it. Or just ask the driver. To return, it's exactly the same process, you just flag the bus down on the street in front of the factory.

Wow! This tour made me pround of being Nicaragüense . They show you the story . I love that you can try it. They also have a store with nice and cool souvenirs, bottles of Flor de caña and even clothing. Its a must stop if you go to Nicaragua. Highly recomended.

I was recommended by friends to take this tour and it did not dissapoint. I was 5 minutes late and was almost not let in the 2PM tour (I got there at 2:05PM!!) but I still managed to talk my way in and joined the group that was just starting.
I did not know a lot of things about Rum, like the aging process, or the way alcohol is fermented, bottled, aged, etc. However the tour guide really knew his stuff, and was a really fun guy. We went to a movie that showed us the story of how the family formed the company, and how they ended up having the largest Rum Reserve in the world. We also were taught on how to try if it is a good rum by many tasting techniques while we were at a previously-unavailable-to-the-public owners-family-only location, plus other details I will not share to not spoil the tour for readers. Overall I would recommend it to anyone traveling to Nicaragua!

I and my three favourite rum aficionados enjoyed a Sunday afternoon tour at Flor de Caña.
The tour was well paced (you won’t be bored); I found it bordering on rushed. One of the problems was that the tour was given in both Spanish and English so all the information was delivered twice quickly. One language, delivered more slowly would have been better. Also, the 18-year tasting session felt a bit rushed – we didn’t get to finish that lovely rum – perhaps this was because half the tourists in the group were kids who couldn’t participate in the tasting.
I particularly liked the museum and could have spent twice as long as allowed there.
Details:
I believe you do have to book in advance. I heard about someone getting turned away without a reservation. You can reserve through the Flor de Caña website. However, we booked our tour the day before through the Flor de Caña Boutique on the eastern outskirts of Chinandega.
We didn’t pay when we reserved, but paid at the Flor de Caña site. The cost was $20 per adult (less if you are Nicaraguan, then it is less). We were told we needed to arrive at 1:30 pm for the 2:00 pm tour. We arrived around 1:50 pm, and it was fine, though maybe if the tour had had more people, we would have needed to arrive earlier.
The location in Chichigalpa was easy to find with google maps or WAZE. It is on the left hand side as you drive south towards Chichigalpa.
We had two opportunities to taste during the tour – once, the 18-year, and then at the end we got free samples of the 7-year. Also, at the second tasting bar, we were able to buy tastes of the other rums. We tried the 25-year; not inexpensive, even for a single shot; but a fun opportunity to try a delicious old rum.

We enjoy distillery tours. We have been twice to tour Bourbon distilleries in KY, USA. We visit local distilleries at home. We had never seen the process for rum and thought it would be cool, especially since Flor de Cana is so associated with Nicaragua. But this was a bust and we should have skipped it.
The "tour" is really just watching a video in a hot little theater which is essentially a long advertisement for Flor de Cana. Then you do the tasting. While that was fun, they draw the process out for way to long so that everyone is antsy by the time it's finished. We went to see the barrels, which were not being assembled the day of our visit anyway so we basically just looked at the barrels and then saw a storage warehouse. That's pretty much it. As others said, nothing about how they actually process sugar cane was part of the tour (other than a brief mention in the video).
Everything felt corporate and like an ad.
We liked the gift shop and were happy to buy but our time there was limited because we were on the 3 PM tour and we didn't get to the shop until about 4:30 (there had been a technical problem getting the stupid video to play which caused a delay).
We wanted to get some drinks in the shop thinking that the bar would sell them. That was not the case. The tastings were it. Luckily we had done a tasting in Granada (which I highly recommend BTW at La Ciudad restaurant) and so it was not so disappointing not to be able to buy drinks.
Some other negatives: They are really strict about security, which was weird (they needed our passports to let us enter). No other distillery I have visited has had any kind of security policy like that.
They tell you to arrive a half hour early but all you do is sit there for 30 minutes. If you really have to get there that early, why not offer drinks for sale, or have a little interactive instructional area, or have people wait in the gift shop so they can buy some things rather than being rushed at the end?
It was clear that when the tour was over they wanted us out of there as everyone wanted to go home. We were dropped back at the entrance and not where to exit so we walked through the car park to meet our taxi but we weren't allowed to walk through there and had to backtrack to the original entrance.

Our guide Vladimir was certainly passionate about Flor de Cana and did a fantastic job in imparting his enthusiasm to our tour group.
Being Scottish, I have visited my ample share of malt whisky distilleries. This tour matched up to and even exceeded many of those. The distillery is in an idyllic setting and is remarkably clean and well attended.
The info video film was very entertaining and professionally edited. The tasting was the most impressive aspect to me. What a selection of smooth luxuriant nectar they produce!
Better than a malt whisky? I always find it impossible to say what is "better" when it comes to comparing malts. However, Flor de Cana make some highly worthy products and I already have a bottle of their 12 year old reserve nestling in my cellar amongst some Islay and Highland malts!
Slainthe Mhath!, as we say in Scotland; Cheers!

Had no idea that an advance reservation was needed, but turns out - you do. I've looked thru the website and haven't found anything where it says you need an advance reservation. I've seen that it was an option to book in advance. Needless to say, we wasted a lot of time trying to visit. Note that it's not open everyday either. But honestly, the most disappointing part was the rude service at the ticket window. Just added insult to injury. Disappointing...

The tour is and very well organized and informative. The guide was very good and fluent in three languages. If you are staying in Leon, Nicaragua I would suggest taking a taxi instead of paying a tour operator. It's only about a 20 minute drive and would be cheaper than a tour operator. The tour of Flor de Cana is run by Flor de Cana so a tour operator only drives you there and back.

It has European prices, it's too expensive for other Central Americans.
You see a video with some history, try a cup of rum, see the barrels and go to the souvenir shop, that is it. It would be interesting to see the plantation and to go through the whole process from stage to stage.

I will be in on Oct 7, Friday from 8 am -4 pm to Corinto and am interested in tourng the Rum factory. Who can provide pick up to and from the pier?
Thanks,
Tammy Adler
Written 6 September 2016
There is two tours at 9 am and 11 am. A travel agent can arrange your trip from Corinto to Flir de Cana. It should be around an hour one way.
