Only for nature and hiking lovers
Nov. 2019
The region of Chinandega where Cosigüina volcano is located is a tropical dry area, so do not expect cool weather, instead you will experience one of the wildest humid and warm places. During the hike you will be able to see many birds and if you are lucky (and early enough) you may see some small wild pigs and almost for sure the steps of the wild deer. Do not go without a guide, there are many confusing trails that may make you lose your way. The views at the summit are gorgeous and you will feel like the effort was worth. When back in Potosí you can learn about the local fishing business and if you dare you can swim in the local popular natural swimming pool. There are two roads to the Cosigüina summit, I would recommend the Potosí trail for those who want a full experience and the Cabo de Hornos road for those who want to hike the shortest way. Both are worth, but always go with a local expert guide.

Not just a volcano- stay time in Potosi
Mar. 2018 • Business
The volcano is nice and has good views, but the highlight is the fishing town of Potosi. Worth staying a few nights, see the fishermen as they come to shore, take a boat tour to the islands, see the birdlife, meet fishermen at sea and enjoy the town.

Views are worth the sweat

Lovely day tour with Pinoleros Tour, with plentiful birdwatching and views of 3 counties from the top of an ancient crater lake.

Potosi is a destination worth visiting
Mar. 2018 • Couples
Following a previous advice, we did not come only to visit the Consiquina volcano but also spent some time in the town of Potosi. Was one of the best experiences in Nicaragua. This is an authentic fishing village where you meet the fishermen as they go out in the morning or come back in the evening. Where there are no doors in most houses and cooking is done outside. Where kids and animals roam the streets and beach. Where people are friendly and when we joined them in the “hot springs” we all had fun. We followed the advice and took a boat for the day to the outer small islands and had late lunch and a swim in the lagoon. Was a magical day.

Spend some days in potosi. It the grwat

Yes, climbing the volcano is n8be and the views are amazing. But if this is all you do you missed a real hidden treasure. Spend a night or two, go see the fishermen come in at the afternoon and all kids and birds come to shore. Join in the village pool and you will not forget the friendly event. Negotiate with a fishermen to take you on a boat trip to the 2 islands of consiguina and experience frigat birds, boobies, and always pelicans who are nesting there within reach. On the way back get the boat into the lagoon for a calm amazing swim. We just fell in love again

Awesome view!
Awesome wildlife!

With 18km quite a long trip though.

Worst guide ever... He was running in front of us all the time, didn´t stop once to explain anything, just to show us proudly a dead boa, which we thought was pretty sad, since they aren´t really dangerous, since they aren´t venomous. On the way back we stumbled across a live one and couldn´t stop him to murder the poor creature as well.
He could hardly speak spanish :P well, he just had a pretty bad accent which we couldn´t understand, since we just had basic knowledge with spanish. Moreover he promised us to show us the hot springs on our way back, but after we reached the end of the hike he simply vanished as quick as he´d been running before.

On the pro side: the view is amazing and the forrest as well, the are gigantic trees, everything was blooming with violette and yellow flowers, just beatifull.
And you need a guide, since there are tiny ways all over the place and it´s hard to ceep track which one you should be using (and I´m used to hiking and thus finding a propper way, just as a hind to anyone thinking they´ll just try it on their own: you´ll most probably get lost)

All in all: do it!

Nice hike

The crater is interesting. There are buzzards, hawks soaring around and lots of other birds to see on the way up. We also saw a snake, iguanas, countless lizards. The walk down was harder than the ascent.

Worth the Effort
Nov. 2016 • Friends
Our guide Martin, met us at the Brisos Del Golfo hotel in Potosi at 5:40 in the morning! The lovely hotel owner, Rafael, gave us a lift to the entrance of the park. We hiked up to the top and met Rafael back at the entrance around 11:50. The hike was beautiful, the view from the top worth it, but it totally maxed out the ability of the three of us (aged 65, 64 and 54). Climb a volcano can be checked off my bucket list! Paid $40USD (for the three of us) to have a guide like Martin talk about the flora, fauna and area.

Hiking trip on the vulcano
Aug. 2016 • Friends
It's a great hike, takes three hours up and 2,5 down if you only want to go go the top and not down to the Laguna (we didn't see a way down but it should be possible somehow). Halfway is in the forest (shade), halfway in the sun. We started at Potosí. From there you take the street onwards to northwest until you see a big sign about the natural park. Turn left here and just follow the path up to the vulcano. You can't really miss it so don't listen to the locals who are trying to sell you a guide (except maybe if you want to know more about your surroundings, definitely not because of the directions). The view on top is breathtaking.
