Short visit to a unique site

We made a very short self-guided visit to this unique historic beautiful and conveniently located site. I think the visit would have been more interesting with a tour, so suggest arranging this ahead of time.

Pretty little house!

Driving through Ferney-Voltaire we decided to stray and steal a quick visit to the Chateau. Beautifully renovated, it is located at the end of a picturesque path surrounded by leafy trees. Keep in mind that you have to pay to enter the Chateau.

Nice place to learn more about Voltaire
Jun. 2019 • Friends
I knew very little about Voltaire, and enjoyed how their educational pieces were set up, especially the one where there was a video of 4 people speaking to each other about his writings. I will make a point to read one of his books.

Well worth visiting
May 2019 • Friends
Ferney-Voltaire is an unique place which was in effect set up as a social experiment by the famous French writer Voltaire which he chose as a refuge from both Catholic Paris and Calvinist Geneva (which banned him from building a theatre). If you visit the mansion you can find out more about his effect on the then tiny impoverished hamlet and his own career as a writer and controversialist. The building is a splendid example of 18th century French architecture in its own right. Many (most?) French people revere Voltaire and hence are interested in the house for this reason alone. Anglophones less knowledgeable about Voltaire can still enjoy the house and its setting. The guided tour was excellent if perhaps a bit long-winded and reverential for my liking, I went for a walk round the gardens towards the end. You can see aircraft taking off from Geneva airport a kilometre away which is rather dramatic in the rural setting. You also get a good view of both the Alps and the Juras on a clear day (unfortunately it was cloudy on the day I went). Well worth doing if you are staying in Ferney or Geneva and even worth a trip from further afield. But you will not need more than an hour or so.

Where Voltaire cultivated his garden
Apr. 2019 • Family
If Voltaire is remembered at all today in Anglo-American culture, it's for his savage but gay (in the old sense of seemingly light-hearted) satire, "Candide," in which all the great institutions of the day--armies, churches, and governments--are sliced open to reveal the utter hypocrisy within. Sound familiar?

"Candide" ends with the memorable advice that despite the brutality and cynicism of those who rule us, we can only be responsible for what we make ourselves. Or as Candide puts it, "We must cultivate our garden." Voltaire's chateau at Ferney is where he cultivated his own garden. For the last 20 (and fruitful) years of his life, Voltaire poured out his writing and his wealth here.

Ferney is in France but just barely over the border from Geneva. Voltaire always liked an escape route to hand, should he (and he always did) piss off powerful enemies. Voltaire made the village of Ferney his garden, lavishing his fortune (no starving artist Voltaire) to revive local farming, to buy off the ruthless French tax collectors, to build houses, and to bring in new people including a colony of dissident watchmakers fleeing Geneva's oppressive Calvinist ruling class. Ferney is also where Voltaire took up a series of what we would call, "human rights" cases. His meddling on behalf of basic justice enraged the French church, the French judiciary, and the French court.

The house itself is small, at least for a chateau but it has been beautifully restored. Voltaire's life (including his messy private life) and work are presented on a pair of snazzy interactive light tables (you "swipe" with a golden triangle, sphere, and cube). In another room, life-sized actors on a life-sized video screen present some of Voltaire's subversive arguments for liberty of conscience and of expression in a world ruled by religious fanatics and political megalomaniacs. Sound familiar?

Not for everyone though. And it's not an all-day outing, unless it's a warm day and the grounds are dry under foot. Then Ferney, inside and out, is spectacular for it's where Voltaire planted his garden and made it grow.

FERNEY OF VOLTAIRE CHATEAU
May 2018
Once I visited the Mansion I realized that less was known about him so I mention a brief account. Ferney is the name of the small village adjacent to Geneva. Allée du Château is located at 01210 Ferney-Voltaire The chateau is listed as one of the “Houses of the Famous” (Maison des Illustres), He staged dramatic works at the estate and received "enlightened" guests from all over Europe. The French state acquired the property in 1999. I escaped from all my routines in Geneve and found the best peace in Ferney. Voltaire transformed the town of Ferney along the lines laid out in Candide (1759) and summed up in his famous maxim: "il faut cultiver notre jardin" (we must tend to our garden). Voltaire continued his fight against intolerance from Ferney, There is a graveyard just opposite the Museum.

Pleasant hour that filled in time. Not a great deal for tourists in Ferney so it wins.

This place was a time filler whilst we waited for our hotel time. Very easy to find .A Very nice building set in large grounds and obviously an interesting past, which was not really our subject. Interesting furniture etc but really needed a speaking guide or easier information to bring it alive. Gardens in late March showed promise but not overall a value for money visit.ie no discounts for the elderly or out of season?.Friendly reception though.
