Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is one of my favourite places in the World. Love visiting. There’s a wonderful market on a Tuesday morning. Lots of fantastic things to purchase. However, do not be fooled when buying beautiful cloth pouches with ‘lavender’ inside. If it is wrapped with up in a ribbon and sealed- it might have tissues inside instead of the advertised lavender. I bought two and my friends had the same issue. Check before buying!

Very neat to walk around the city at your own pace, not crowded and a hidden gem. Nice pathways with splendid views. Great restaurants and the new lower city, still very old is just steps away

One of my favourite places. A beautiful town, lots of history, not too pretentious and the surrounding scenery is exceptional.
If you are in the area then please visit this town. Regardless of your interests, I am sure that you will have an enjoyable time.
The market (Tuesday morning) is also the best that I have visited. Get there early though as it can get busy.
I would willingly move there to live. Finger’s crossed for a lottery win.

We arrived in Maison la Romaine on a guide book suggested tour of the Dantelles. Earlier we had thought that from a map, this looked like a good place to take a picnic and eat down by the river.
Impossible!! The river was about 10 metres down from the road and bridge unless one took a complicated route to get to a riverside car park. But that was our fault for not being able to find the correct information earlier.
We walked across the bridge from the new town to explore the old (Roman) town. Another fascinating place and well worth the stop
The chateau at the top of the hill is not worth the climb unless you are looking for views. The chateau itself is in ruins and fenced off. It must be said though that the views from the top are excellent and quite clearly this is why the chateau (probably a fortress in earlier times) was place there.

We easily parked and followed the people to the market. They had all the usual tablecloths, napkins, hand towels, soaps as well as tons of foods.
The website Marches-Provence.com tells you the market days.

Really, Vaison la Romaine is worth the journey. The Cité Medieval is just an unspoiled treasure. Visitors aplenty but they walk through as there are some restaurants and only one tourist shop. There is plenty to eat and buy over the other side of the Roman bridge.
Do visit the Roman historic site but go to the Museum first and the “ruins” will come to life.

We stayed about a ten minute drive from Vaison la Romaine so visited several times for various reasons. It is a busy & vibrant place with lots going on. The Tuesday market was a great experience but we learnt to get there early eg about 8am to avoid the significant crowds. We also visited for the Vide Grenier which had stalls dotted throughout the old quarter and to see the Roman ruins. The old part of town is very beautiful with lots of wonderful architecture & views. We parked at the car park by the roman bridge. Spaces always available (including early Tuesday morning).

Stunning place. Like many other places the Romans were here first. Wonderful old medieval quarter, attractive town square, lots of places to eat, excellent wines (providing you know what you are looking for), great markets and within a short driving distance of more small villages than you can poke a stick at. Our unit was fabulous - about 10 minutes walk to the town square and an easy walk to the old quarter. An absolute highlight of our six weeks away. The coffee was a bit 50/50 at times - but that was a small price to pay for the location. We'll be back!

We will be visiting Vaison la Romaine next July-can you tell me which day was the market day in town?
My husband will be cycling Mont Ventoux? Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated.
Sincerely,

Any recommended safe bicycling routes near (or not so near) Vaison-la-Romaine (avoiding traffic, dangerous roads)?
Written 9 July 2015
Many many people ride bikes in the area, we saw them a lot. However given the Curvy roads and the speedy French drivers I would be too nervous. I am sure there are many more people who can help you with this as I am basically a driver

I was planning to use buses or trains and use Vaison-la-Romaine as my base because it sounds so charming. Would that be possible..I'd like to visit Arles, Avignon and Nimes, in particular, or would I need a car?
Written 27 June 2015
I don't think I would have seen one tenth of the cool stuff I saw without a car. Are you traveling alone? There were some times I needed my travel companion to get out to help guide me to back up or whatever. There are some VERY tiny streets. The old section of VLR is one. My goodness. About 6' wide roads. Very cool experience, though. And, a GPS is essential. Have fun.
