About

Get the combo ticket that allows for entry to this museum and the one in Thiepval. Two excellent museums. Bring hands free headphones for your cell phone and you can use the free wifi to then scan the QR codes in the museum which feature actors in period gear telling the stories of the war. The museum begins with a history of the chateau itself which dates back nearly over 1,000 years. It's an interesting story to hear. Once you pass through this portion of the exhibit you proceed back outside and up the steps or via the lift to the WWI portion of the museum, which is big in size and covers alot. The WWI portion begins with a film in either French, English, German or one other language (Dutch or Spanish?) and covers the war - it lasts about 15-20 minutes but is very informative. Then, proceed into the WWI portion of the museum. Excellent exhibit with loads of information in French, English and German. Take your time and enjoy. Free parking is located across the street from the building or next to it. Bathrooms and snack machines on site, or you can walk to a local eatery. Nice giftshop at the end of the tour as well. Staff were welcoming and helpful.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 25 October 2023
- Dave WIlkley, United Kingdom19 contributionsRather disappointingI took my 12 year old son to visit this museum on our way back from spending a few days in Normandy looking at the D-day landing sites and museums and I have to say I found this museum rather disappointing. It was very clean and clinical with huge quantities of written information around the many artifacts but did not convey any of the reality of the Western Front. The best bit was the introductory film which at least gave a good introductory background to the events leading up to the start of the conflict and gave an idea of what the Western Front would have been like.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 24 August 2024

Whilst we enjoyed the museum we felt it was more like an art gallery in feel. It was very clinical and lacked atmosphere (unlike Thiepval which was superb in atmosphere) The museum requires a lot of reading (assuming you've no mobile to download QRcodes). We also felt the staff weren't particularly approachable or friendly.. Again Thiepval was superb in this area. Staff gave us no additional info at the ticket desk. There is a cafe but it was closed and seemed to be permanently closed, despite being a very large new looking area. So overall it was informative but lacked atmosphereVisited September 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 12 September 2024

I've been to various history museums over the years and I was a little disappointed with this one, in comparison. It is ok but, for example, the one in Zonnebeke is so much better. I liked the uniforms laid out on the floor, but there was plenty of reading around the museum, which was laid out in different languages and they are colour coded but I think it could have been better. Interesting collection but I didn't come away feeling it had anything special. Perhaps this is because I've been to many WW1 exhibits, memorials and museums.

This a a good museum with fascinating collections, especially the Otto Dix room.
The collection is well presented, staff are helpful and there is certainly real value in you visiting here if you are in the Somme region.
It would be great for those learning about the First World War - the interactive displays on the QR codes would bring things to life for younger visitors especially.

We really enjoyed this museum. It is very spacious and offers lots of rooms to discover.
I loved that there were so many posters and various works relating to the war that were on display. This gave a very interesting artistic point of view. Special mention to the drawings by Otto Dix on display, very striking.
A projection room was showing a half-hour film, a little slow. If you use the double ticket, very advantageous, valid for Péronne and Thiepval, then be careful to keep the receipt, requested in the second museum.

I toured this museum after a pleasant lunch in the nearby square. I was directed by the young lady at the desk directly to the section about the Australian involvement in the battle of Peronne. That would have been worth the visit alone, but the rest of the museum is excellent also. There are many thought provoking displays, beyond the commonplace collections of uniforms and armaments. Well worth visiting.

The city of Peronne is located on the river Somme, just south of one of the bloodiest battlefields of WWI. On the first day of the offensive of the French and British Empire armies against the German lines, British forces sustained 57,000 casualties (the worst day in the history of the British army). After several months of fighting, both sides had lost more than one million men for minor changes in the front line. The museum in Peronne does not aim at reconstituting the battle, but it presents some background history and gives a feeling for what was the life of the soldiers. The displays show the complete equipment that soldiers were carrying with them to the front and their weapons. There is a movie on the battle but the most striking part of the museum is a complete room dedicated to the war drawings by German painter Otto Dix. An extraordinary testimony on the terror of war!
There is a little park around the museum but the coffee shop does not offer much. There are several restaurants and cafes on the square across the museum entrance, and the city and its main square deserve a short visit.

The museum at Peronne is a good starting point for a drive along the Circuit du Souvenir, a scenic loop through the sites of the Battle of the Somme, past memorials and many, many cemeteries. The museum itself presents a collection of many artifacts, organized in four main rooms, covering the pre-war period, 1914-1915, 1916-1918, and the post-war time. The flagship artifacts are presented in special cabinets on the floor. The museum is very modern and friendly, even warm, in terms of atmosphere - that and the neutral presentation of artifacts doesn't really do its subject justice. The museum keeps the horrors of the war at a safe distance, which is a lost opportunity - with the exception of the Otto Dix collection. The smaller museum at Thiepval, eventually reached on the Circuit du Souvenir, is much darker and complements the museum at Peronne well. Buy the 2 in 1 ticket.

Thought this was a very well laid out museum with very clear displays and a lovely level of interpretation. I especially liked the floor displays which made a very strong visual impact. Could have spent substantially longer there!

Hi
Friends and i are visiting this area in June and are potentially interested in visiting. Can anyone advise:
A. how long is a sensible amount of time that would need to be spent here?
B. Anything we should be aware about of visiting in June e.g. closures.
C. What the opening/closing days/times are?
many thanks!
Written 15 March 2015
I would plan on an afternoon or a morning...tough for me to answer because I am into military history and enjoy the varied exhibits ranging from vehicles to period music, uniforms, etc. If you find it that you don't need that much time there are some lovely cafes nearby and some nice walks you can take. Peronne is a beautiful town and the museum is right in town.
As for closures and operating hours I would Google the museum website and find the latest information there. We were there in early Sept so hours and closure days may have been different than they will be in June.
