Sadly the cathedral was closed when we visited and the timing meant we were unable to go inside because of our entry time to the Boves and departure for Paris. I will go back to Arras as there is much to see in the surrounding area as well as loving Arras.

Not what we had expected. It was very long and thin inside. Surprisingly it is not open all day so watch out for the times

So this church was rebuilt after the war. It was built in the style of the great cathedrals throughout France. Being newer, it is a lot lighter in color and a lot brighter inside.

This church is next to the abbaye. After seeing all the other churches throughout France, this was is just ok. However, if your looking for something to do while in Arras, this church is a short walk from the belfrey and has some decent historical information about the church inside.

Something to do.....

This Cathedral, built in classical style replaces the earlier one destroyed in World War 1. It’s soaring Corinthian pillars topped in places by enormous stone vases give the whole place a wonderful feeling of space and light. There are few sculptures and the plain interior is offset by colourful fresco paintings. The main side Chapel has an impressive modern painted domed riling.
There are acknowledged connections with British soldiers killed in the Great War with commemorative wall tablets and other memorabilia.

The complex St Vaast is very large and it is located in a less touristic part of the city (but just 10 minutes walking from the "Grand Place".
This cathedral is just next door of the Abbey and both are quite similar as structure.
Of course inside they are quite different.

Feels like a very large space for the size of town.

Lots of beauty to look at inside and out. Really enjoyed the tranquillity of the place.

Arras was on the front line for most of WWI and this resulted in much of the city being levelled by bombing. The cathedral was one of the buildings destroyed and the restored version in present day Arras is impressive.
It's a very large cathedral for a relatively small city. There are very interesting photographs showing the devastation caused during WW1.

The cathedral just felt like one empty shell. Wasn't the usual glitz and glamour expected from a Catholic Church, just one big open space. Very dissapointing.

We went to St Vaast around noon and found all of the doors locked. There were no signs and we were puzzled. Later in the day we mentioned it at the information centre and found that it only opened for a short period in the afternoon. Thankfully we managed to get there before it closed. Take the time to go. It is outstanding and the painting in the dome is worth seeing.
