- Tsuiyen B16 contributionsInteresting WWI museum and tourFascinating and very interesting as you are in a group of approx 12-15 people per guide . We went on the English speaking tour. You go into the tunnels and the experience is delivered in chronological order up to the final minutes of a planned attack from the Tunnels. Guide was informative, engaging and welcoming of any questions. You learn a lot about WWI just from this one museum visit.Visited August 2023Travelled with familyWritten 4 October 2023
- David APreston, United Kingdom524 contributionsFascinating tourThey only provide guided tours so it is necessary to book in advance. I found this out because I’d emailed the museum and they couldn’t have been more helpful. Although this tour was only in French, the guide presented it in English as well. The audio sets were also set to English. The underground tunnels and their history were well explained. The tour last about 1 1/2 hours and finished with a short film. The tour is well organised with a good mixture of tour guide , audio and video. Taken at an unhurried pace and it is well done with a good build up to the actual attack.Hello Michael, thank you very much for your positive review and for recommending the Wellington Tunnels. - Mike JEssex, United Kingdom57 contributionsMust-visit experience with wonderful staffAmazing experience of historically significant tunnels. We had no ida of the history and significance of these tunnels in WW1. The tour and exhibitions have been created very professionally. Our young female guide was excellent, sharing interesting detail and guiding us along the tunnels in a sensitive and engaging way. Incredible to think that these tunnels housed over 20,000 men for a time before the battle. All the staff were both friendly and professional and demonstrated a good knowledge not just of the tunnels but the wider WW! history. They asked where we were from and were able to direct us towards a memorial to our local regiment without needing to look anything up. Well worth the time and small admission fee. The shop has a good selection of books and memorabilia.Hello Mike and thank you for your glowing review. We are delighted that your visit to the Wellington Tunnels left you with such fond memories. The guide juggled French and English effortlessly and without it being an interruption. We were provided with a clear insight into the Battle of Arras and the contribution made, voluntarily, by men from the Commonwealth as well as the Allies. Very good value for money too.Hello Jacky, our team would like to thank you for your positive feedback. - Richard7031Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom24 contributionsWow - what an absolute gem of a museum !Visiting the Arras area as part of a group from my rugby club History Society, and having some free time in our schedule, we booked to tour the Wellington Quarry Museum. From start to finish this was a totally immersive, engrossing and enjoyable experience, utilising modern technology to enhance the huge tunnel system beneath Arras and bring history to life. At times I almost felt like a Tommy waiting to go into battle, and went through a variety of emotions as the tour progressed. Our bilingual lady guide was very knowledgable and this, combined with the audio headset, assisted in bringing the tunnels completely to life. The whole tour took around 1 hour and it was most definitely time very well spent. I would highly commend the museum and its welcoming staff, and urge anyone with a spare hour or two to pass to visit this absolutely gem of a museum. - ErinBUk146 contributionsWorth a visitWas in Arras for lunch. Ended up reading up about WWI in the area and saw Signs for this site around town. Went on a Sunday late afternoon. Museum was busy, we had a guided tour which was informative and well done. Impressive site. Very well done they obviously invested some money to make it very customer friendly - though some benches in the caves would be welcome as there are a lot of senior citizens with reduced mobility and the tour is about 45 mins. Really well stocked shop out front for all things WWl. Recommended.Hello, We are delighted to hear that your visit to Wellington Tunnels was a positive step in your stay in Arras. We are aware that the visit sometimes requires a few poses, which is why you will find sit-stand chairs all along the tour. We are also pleased that you enjoyed our shop. Underground museum which has been created in a section of the many miles of tunnels dug by the British/New Zealand Army in the 1914-1918 war. The WW I tunnels connect with original tunnels & quarries dating back to the Middle Ages underneath the city of Arras.
Visitors are taken 20 metres down to the underground quarry & tunnels in a lift. The lift has glass walls & as the lift descends, visitors can see the chalk walls of the lift shaft.
Each person wears a headset with their chosen language. The guide takes the group on a tour through the tunnels lasting approximately 25 mins. On leaving the tunnels the group is invited into a small cinema to watch a short & moving film about the Battle of Arras, 1917.
Café, Shop & Toilets on site.
Highly recommended.

Very informative guide who dealt with the language requirements of a mixed French and English group of adults.
Some explanations by the guide, interspersed with commentary from an audio guide.
Good use of sound, video and lighting to help bring the 1917 conditions to life.
Tour took around 1 hour 20 mins
Would thoroughly recommend to all

Located underneath the outskirts of the City of Arras, the Carriere Wellington is a truly fascinating piece of WW1 history. The guided multi-lingual tour (some by audio, some from the guide) of the astonishing complex of tunnels dug by a battalion of New Zealand gold miners that secretly housed 24,000 troops ahead of the battle of Arras is EXCELLENT: very cleverly curated, atmospheric and brilliantly delivered by the enthusiastic and hugely knowledgeable guide.
On-site parking is easy.
Tip: Book ahead if your travel plans allow you to commit, as the tours are limited. And take a warm layer of clothing. In the heat of Summer it was still only about 11C down there!

Really enjoyed our trip down into the tunnels today, the young female guide was very knowledgeable and took time to translate to myself and my husband, the English version. (We were the only two English speakers in the group).
The tour itself took approximately 55 minutes and well worth the €6.30 cost.

This is a fine museum which takes you on an extended journey along the network of tunnels dug and expanded by intrepid New Zealanders in the First World War. 20,000 troops lived down there before going over the top. Excellent guides give you fascinating detail of life 30 metres down. Sobering and awe-inspiring.

A fascinating and moving place to visit. Our guide was excellent, the audio guide was very informative too and the whole place is well worth your time.
Our French is limited (sadly - must work on this!) so the English spoken by the guide and in the audio guide was much appreciated.
A great insight into the battle of Arras and more.
Thank you Matthias (our guide - I hope that if have got your name right!)

What are the start times of the tours? How much are they?
Written 29 October 2018
There were several a day. We took one at 4pm. Best to check their website as it can vary each day. Can't remember how much the tickets were. I think about 7 euros per adult.

Not very much actual walking and a lot more standing around watching films - so 10/15 mins but in short bursts

- Yes, you can, they will put you in with another group to form approx 15 to 18 persons
- Guided tour, English spoken by French Arras tourism staff is excellent. At the end of tour there is a 10 minutes film. If you have to wait to form a group it is possible you will see the film first
- Free car park at Wellington Quarries
- Small artefacts exhibition that you can see while waiting
- Comfort zone, book and souvenir shop
- Take pictures with the tommy helmets BEFORE you start the tour. You will have to hand over the helmets when leaving!
