Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

A beautiful town, with a sensational coastal walk, a beach that is a delight, a town hall that strives to offer the best and citizens, both from the Villa and from neighboring and not so bordering areas, trying to boycott all this wonder with their pets leaving their feces. through all these common spaces to make us see that we do not enjoy the environment and that we focus on not stepping on them. Pets are prohibited on the beach 7/7/365 days a year, as some understand that these are the days that they can go and leave their pets. pets leave their fecal traces everywhere, an economic sanction helps a lot for people to be civil, the laws are to be complied with and the city council must force them to be complied with, that's what explanations that touch the pocketbook are for, we don't want bullshit dogs in all public places or looking at the ground, we want to enjoy the environment with hygienic and sanitary guarantees. A pet's bowel movement is a bowel movement that no one wants, much less if we have nothing to do with it.

Living in the area, we have been coming for a long time on Hendaye beach towards the dyke. It was a quiet, beautiful place and swimming easy and pleasant. Surprised to find that bathers are no longer welcome. The space dedicated to surf schools is far too large and grows year after year. Too bad! Will swimmers have to congregate further?

The beach is beautiful but nothing to sit down for a drink or a snack. And parking is abuse: you have to pay even on Sundays and public holidays. €31 for excess. Parking meters not easy to find. We understand why there were so many free places and why the town is dead, while the neighboring villages are full of tourists. That it is chargeable in July/August, I understand but out of season, it is scandalous. Tourists go your way, Hendaye doesn't want us.

Magnificent beach, huge at low tide it is reduced by 2/3 at high tide, but don't worry, there is room for everyone! Because even at high tide we are far from the crowded beaches of the Côte d'Azur!
Excellent beach to learn surfing or body boarding, many surf schools on site and places are dedicated for surfers, with swimmers also having their places.

We come from Bayonne from time to time, the bay allows easy swimming with children, less waves than on the rest of the coast
That said, it comes at a cost: 13€ parking for one afternoon! and moreover, no clean toilet!
We came out of season and this Saturday: each time the same situation: filthy toilets, overflowing!!! it would perhaps be a question of doing something to solve the problem at some point
I do not necessarily like to compare, but the fact is that I have never seen the toilets on the beaches of Anglet or anywhere else in such a state, in season or not.... At the Parking Award, a minimum of adequate service should be offered...and toilets are a basic

Huge beach where there are. Huge sand and clean water, with some algae in specific areas. The beach was overflowing with people as it was a good day, so parking was an odyssey. We can even find as formerly the striped canvas booths, the truth is that I found it an excellent place except for the foot showers that are dry, do not have water, something incomprehensible since it is not an area with drought problems, so the sand you get stuck, good thing it is fine white sand.

I love this family beach, with its proximity to Spain, the view of the mountains when we go surfing... But on the other hand, for years the beach has been littered with these little pieces of plastic with holes! I sometimes find dozens of them when I come back from the session... Where does it come from?

I was there on a rainy day, went surfing and loved it! Really pretty beach with nice, gentle waves and plenty cosy coffeeshops to warm up after a session. Really felt European when I went at the end of the beach over to Spain.
Only downfall: The parking situation is a bit of nightmare. BUt suppose off season its better.

Hendaye is a bit like the poor cousin of Biarritz, but it's very neat, tidy and not as expensive, and you only need to walk across the bridge of the "Avenue d'Espagne", and you're in Spain! Fantastic.
The beach is well equipped, lots of kids beach clubs in summer, sadly the weather wasn't the best when we went there.
While in Hendaye, go to the tourism office and they will give you all the details to travel cheaply from Hendaye to San Sebastian (in Spain) by train. Worth every penny. Return tickets for 2 adults did cost us about 7 euros (yes, that's 3.50 each!).
Quiet little harbour with the river separating France from Spain.

Visited Hendaye beach on last day on holiday to visit friends living in the SW france on a hot, sunny afternoon. Could not have wished for more. Sand so clean!! Thank you :) Water too, and not too chilly for the Atlantic. V special sunset and so beautiful face across to Spain. Only wish would be for more parking.

Is it possible to stay on the beach with high tide or does the water cover all the beach?

How is Hendaye without a car? Family of 4 in July 2 weeks. Would like as base to visit San sebastian,Bilboa, lourdes, Biarritz
Written 12 April 2019
Hi Michael,
My first thoughts are it would be difficult. It depends where you stay is the real issue. The train stn at Hendaye is about a 300-400m walk to the Spanish train stn in Irun (the first town in Spain), you cross a bridge.
But, it is the distance from where your base is to the train stn. French taxis are EXPENSIVE so be aware of that. I don’t know about the bus routes.
To try and get an idea of distances, you can use google earth and on Apple, maps. As from what I remember, the stn at Hendaye is not in the most beautiful area and is limited on its hotels. It is also a bit of a slog to the beach.
You can also contact the tourist information office in Hendaye , they should be able to provide you with some help.
