- tdsjpBromyard, United Kingdom627 contributionsLovely authentic food marketGreat open market that takes over the most of Sarlat on Saturdays. Great food stalls in the centre selling local produce. Covered market is also open. Despite it being busy it was a relaxed atmosphere.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 June 2024

Big tomatoes and big sweet black cherry and vegetable and meat so fresh . It made me wants to cook. But we're on tour. - Jim WSindelfingen, Germany8,610 contributionsVery Impressive Market For A Smaller CityMy wife and I enjoy the concept of European markets, something that we should incorporate in the United States. This market had plenty of delicious foods to sample. The first area you hit is the paella section. I love paella and was totally impressed by the paella varieties they offered. One can spend the day sampling truffles, cheeses, and meats, buy some artwork, or pick up some new fashion. We purchased a few things truffle related as well as some original artwork. All in all, a very fun day.Visited June 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 11 August 2024
- Keith C2 contributionsBig and extensive. Every thing you could want and more.Never seen a market this big before. Continues from the main square down every street. Full of locals buying their weekly shopping and tourists buying whatever they buy. Get there early, or the day before as we did, otherwise parking could be a problem.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 September 2024

Coming to Sarlat on a market day means loving the taste of adventure. Very little parking, an hour driving around the old town among dozens of cars, Sarlat does nothing to welcome the tourist. After all it comes on its own, why make the effort. Once the first step of the parking lot is taken care of, a big disappointment, the market is made up of foie gras producers, some of whom already have their store in town which sells the same products, sausage, a few desserts and that's it.
Otherwise we can take advantage of the countless tourist trap restaurants which serve duck confit with salardaise apple for almost €30.
In summary, unwelcoming, overrated.
Many small villages know how to welcome all around better.

Great local produce literally everywhere in this huge market but very few people doing anything different. Also at the time of covid19 way too many people and a lot of non-mask wearing. Didn’t feel entirely safe but in the end it was an interesting experience.

Visited this market on saturday via bicycle as we had heard the roads get very busy on market days. They were correct. Is a great market offering all kinds of clothing homeware and all the local speciality foods local to the area. Be warned though it can be very busy in the summer. Lots of places to stop and refresh on the way and of course a beautiful old town to browse around after. Well worth a visit.

We made the classic mistake of turning up mid morning for the market, so the car parks were heaving. Decided to try the park and ride, however then ended up waiting an hour for a bus as there was only one running. To be fair they did get another one on and once we got to the market it was still bustling at 12pm, but there wasn’t much beyond food and local produce, and the market somewhat hid the lovely town. If you actually want to visit Sarlat I recommend going on a non market day.

The Saturday market opens at 8:30. We were told to get there early to get parking. We scoped out parking the day before and arrived at our parking lot at 8:20. There was one spot left. The village should provide satellite parking away from the old town and have a shuttle to take people back and forth. I'd pay a small fee for this service and it would get the cars away from the old town. The markets around France now pretty much sell the same stuff. I saw very little handmade besides jewelry and food. That was sad to see. I can't imagine what it's like in the summer.

The market gets very very busy so it is advisable to go early, especially if you want to park.
It is a very large market with a good variety of stalls. Some things are repeated several times.
Very bustling and interesting to walk around.

French markets are always interesting and this is no exception. It extends throughout the narrow medieval streets and is packed with tourists. Much of the ware is not local but look out for the farmers selling their produce. Enjoy the experience rather than buy!

Emergency escape: heavy parking: no sufficient parking spaces or nearby. Crowded Point of Sale, stepping on each other. Once you have made a booth of early birds, sausages, foie gras, wine, olives and nutcakes it's okay you can turn around and go home. I have doubts about the artisanal and regional side of many of the products. No interest, come back to visit the city (worth a visit) on other days.
