About
The Castle of Desenzano was first built before the year 1000 on the perimeter of an ancient Roman "castrum". It was built as a defensive enclosure to protect the inhabitants of the suburb and to give them shelter from frequent raids of bandits and rival neighbours and from raids of Hungarians. Between 1882 and 1885 the final transformation of the Castle was completed, when, solicited by the town authorities, the inside suburb together with the whole west side of the boundaries was demolished to make place for the barracks "Beretta" in neo-Gothic style. The restoration only consisted in integration of missing elements in walls, cleaning of stone surfaces and improvement of masonries. Under the battlements the rampart walk was reconstructed while, in the inside courtyard, a small arena was built for concerts, demonstrations and the commemoration of historical events.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Beautiful view looking down on the town.

What made our trip very special was Ricardo who worked at the castle ! Have not met a lovely young guy like him for a very long time! He made sure we could take good photos of the halloween decorations by moving away temporarily the barriers and patiently putting them back after the photos. He then explained beautifully the meaning of All Saints Day. Just pure, super wonderful guy ! THANK YOU Ricardo !!

Over the hill the castle is dominated the lake since the 10th century. It was built to defense citizens from barbaric invasions.
A beautiful view on the lake can be seen from here

Not a very large or interesting castle but worth a visit for the views of the lake. I think we only paid about 2 Euros each admission fee - a bargain!

The castle is worth a visit if you are staying in Desenzano, but choose when to visit as the opening hours are not necessarily what you would expect. Watching the sunset light wash over the lake and mountains to the north was really impressive. If you plan your visit in advance you might also be able to catch one of the open air plays or the firework displays, but tickets for these sell out quite a long way in advance.

Pretty castle on top of the hill. Only €3 to get in. However not much to see, only one tower. The information is only in Italian so we couldn't learn much about what we were looking at. Nice trip and lovely views from the tower but that's about all there is to the castle.

As we stayed in Desenzano for a week it was quite obvious that we would visit the Castello. Although it is not a grand castle, the view from the rampart is lovely with a layer of red roofed houses all huddled beneath you , then the lake itself, and in the distance ( if the weather is clear) the mountainous views on other side of the lake. The walk to the Castello is uphill, along a winding narrow road with very nice little shops. In nice weather it is quite pleasant and there is a wooden bench just before the last steep bend where one could pause for a breather.

You can walk up to the top to get a good view of Sirmione and the lake. Right next to the entrance to town.

Lovely castle in Desenzano up the top of the hill, with beautiful views out over the town and onto the lake.

Looks interesting from the outside, but not much of the castle left.
The climb up the tower for views out over a Desenzano and the lake are worth going for. Nominal entry charge.
Didn’t pay extra to go into the Carravaggio exhibition.
