I knew I would love this, even before getting there.
I was right, it was worth the time - for me anyway. I had to pull my husband in, he was just a little reluctant to enter this small, white dust covered shop/factory. The intricate carvings of the stone that is done on the premises had me mesmerized. I could have stayed and chatted with the owner? - the person who did the carving for much longer, but my husband at that point had seen enough.

Perhaps worried that I might succumb to the beauty of the pieces on display, some older than me (they had date and price stickers).
Those were PRICEY. Thousands $$$$ .
No kidding around - you really want to move around carefully and obey the 'do not touch sign'.

It is a little crowded in the small shop above the white dust covered workshop. They also sell small very affordable tourists items.
Not for me though, unless I could walk away with a substantial piece, I was not buying. I believe they said they ship to the US. My husband got a little nervous at that point.
There was no one else there during our visit and that made it especially nice and enjoyable. Undiscovered by tourists? Who knows.
I loved alabaster since I was a little girl, we had some beautiful pieces at home, so at least I have a better idea what they are worth today.
Educational and fun excursion.

Grazie and Arrivederci

We visited as part of an arranged tour in Volterra and were personally guided around the alabaster workshop by Sr. Rossi himself. Such a lovely knowledgeable and generous man sharing his family history and passion of alabaster. Maestro Franco demonstrated to us how to turn alabaster on a lathe with such ease it felt that anyone could do it...not!
The shop attached sells all manner of alabaster gifts and art work to suit most pockets.
A must when in Volterra.😀

Our guide took us to visit this shop that makes alabaster products. Very interesting to see the craftsmen work on the alabaster stone. Good stop to see something different. One can purchase souvenirs.

Visited this alabaster workshop on a Riviera holiday. Interesting to see the alabaster being worked into goods and to learn a little of its history. When tour completed you are able to browse the goods produced in their shop. Purchased a clock, photo frame, candle holder and tea light holder. Was pleased with our souvenirs until returning the the uk and the clock didn't work even after several battery changes. I informed Rossi Alabastri who were extremely flippant and told me if I wanted I could take it to a watch shop and get a new mechanism. Their last email was quite rude.
Even with a discount genuine alabaster goods were cheaper in the local alabaster shops in Volterra. Was disappointed after what had appeared to be an entertaining and informative visit.

The Rossi family is one of the original Alabaster artisans in Volterra. Their last name is "Alabastri", so you know this has been their family's work for many generation. Tours of how they create alabaster products are offered daily. All sorts of alabaster items are for sale, from small items to large works of art. The alabaster from this area of Tuscany is said to be the finest in the world.

A glimpse into the past sculptural excellence that is Italy, the impossibility of finding young people interested in continuing dying traditions notwithstanding the opportunity to see visitors from elsewhere including the royal houses of Netherlands!
Calcium sulphate aka Alabaster , ,perhaps we live in a world where no one wants decorative yet functional objects anymore

We knew nothing about alabaster but there's apparently a long history of carving it in this area of Italy. This visit was part of our tour. We entered the workshops where we were given a short talk by the enthusiastic owner. This was followed by a demonstration making a small pot from a block of alabaster which took about 5 minutes - I bought one home as a souvenir (15 euros). There was white dusk everywhere - I'm surprised the workers weren't wearing masks. Then we went into the showroom and shop area where there were some beautiful things to admire/purchase..

I wonder if Riviera are on a deal with the owner as it is part of their trip to Volterra.

Had a 1en minute display of how alabaster is worked into decorative objects. Told we would get a discount as Riviera customers ! We didn't but by chance returned when another Riviera party arrived and this time got a discount. Plenty of items which we bought as souvenirs/gifts for friends.

Worth a visit but hardly essential to your visit but if you're with Riviera you will be brought here.

We visited the workshop as part of a Riviera tour and it was wonderful seeing a craftsman working the stone and hearing the story of alabaster and its importance to the region. Then we visited the shop to see a huge range of amazing sculptures. I would recommend visiting Rossi before going to any of the many shops that sell
pieces.

The shop is tucked away.....this is not something you will just run into on the Main Street. Tucked away in a corner. I was glad our guide knew enough to take us here. Mr. Rossi's greetings were warm and inviting from the beginning. He was quick to point out that this is the real stuff!! There are inexpensive copies out there, but this is the real deal!! He took us into the workshop, where one of the craftsman showed us on the lathe, how to work the alabaster into something special. I wonder if these guys develop lung problems?? No mask, no protective eye wear? Really a special place to visit, and learn about this wonderful ancient handicraft. You will feel like you have known this family for years. And owning something made by their family is definitely a treasure to have in your home! I was visiting with a friend, but this tour would be enjoyed by families with children as well. I can see groups of teenagers loving this too. Really a cool place.
